B. MOTIVATION

Class, before we proceed to our lesson, let us have first a

quick puzzle game called 4 Pics 1 Word.
Are you familiar with that?
Yes Ma’am
Okay, I will present four pictures and you will guess what
specific word fits with the theme of the photos presented.

(The teacher present first 4 pictures)

The students guessed the word (points)
(The teacher presented the second 4 pictures)
The students guessed the word (line)
How about these?
The students guessed or didn’t guessed
the words (Parallel lines)
These are what we call “Parallel lines”.

Before we discuss parallel lines, I want you to know your

mission for today’s topic.
These are the following objectives that you must achieve in
today’s topic:
1. Define/Describe parallel lines;
2. Find and Illustrate the equation of parallel lines; and
3. Appreciate the idea of parallel lines in real-life setting
by giving examples of parallel lines encountered in real
life

C. PRESENTATION

Let us have first a quick review about points and lines.

The definition of a point. Please read.
Point has an exact location in space and
represented by a dot.
We can name points using capital letters such as:
Point A, Point B, Point C and Point D
When points joined together, it forms a line

A line is a set of all points between and beyond two points.

It has infinite length.
A line in geometry is represented with a line that has two
arrow heads on both sides. This represent that each side of
the line can extends endlessly.

How about parallel lines?

What are parallel lines? Please read
Parallel lines are lines in the same plane
that do not intersect with each other, even
when you extend them in both direction.
Two lines are parallel if they have the
same slope as the image shown.
Thank you.
Observing the movement of the cars.
(The teacher give the example of parallel lines)

So the pair of lines in the same plane that do not intersect

or do not meet even if you extend them called parallel lines.

Do you now know how to determine if the two lines or pair

of lines are parallel lines?

How? Yes Ma’am

If we extend them both direction and they

don’t intersect/meet then they are parallel
lines. They are parallel because the
distance between the two lines never
Very good. changes.
D. LESSON PROPER

Now, how can we form pair of lines that are parallel?

Do you have any idea?

Okay, First thing we do is to find the equation of parallel None Ma’am

lines using one equation and one ordered pair.
But how? Please read. May I call on Ms/Mr

To find the equation of parallel lines, the

first thing to do is to find the slope of the
given line and find the equation of the
second line using the formula:
y- y 1=m1 (x − x 1)
wherein x 1 and y 1 are the coordinates
of the given point, and m1 is the slope
Thank you. of l 1
Now, let us have an example.

Find the equation of a line that is parallel to the line

2x-y+1=0 and passes through the point (1, 5).

What will we do here is to write first the given.

Given:
l 1: 2x-y+1=0
P1 (1,5)
x 1= 1
y 1=5

Then we will find first the slope of l 1.

So, we will convert this equation from general form to slope
intercept form (y=mx+b)

l 1: 2x-y+1=0 → y=mx+b
-y = -2x-1
−1 y − 2 x −1
=
−1 −1
y=2 x +1 → y=mx+b

m 1= 2
y intercept: (0, 1)

The slope of the given line is 2

Parallel lines have the same slope, so the slope of the
unknown line (l 2) will also be 2. So line 2 will have a slope
of 2.

That is one way of getting the slope of parallel lines.

But there is also another way to get the slope of the line,
it is using the given equation in general form.

2x-y+1=0 ← Ax + By + C = 0
−A
m=
B
Where –A is the negative value of A and B is the same B in
the general formula Ax+By+C=0
Our A is positive 2, so it will
−A
m=
B
−2
m=
−1
m=2

Now let us find the equation of l 2 and also the y intercept of

l 2 using the formula y − y 1=m(x − x 1)

m1=2
x 1= 1
y 1=5

y − y 1=m(x − x 1)
y −5=2 ( x −1 )

y −5=2 x −2
−2 x + y +2 −5=0
( −1 ) −2 x + y − 3=0(−1)

2 x − y+ 3=0 ← Equation of l 2

Convert to this general equation to slope intercept

form to check if the lines are parallel. If they have the
same slope then two lines are parallel.

l 2 :2 x − y +3=0

− y=−2 x − 3
−1 y − 2 x −3
=
−1 −1

y=2 x +3 → y=mx+b Yes Ma’am

m 2= 2
y-intercept: (0,3)

Do they have the same slope?

Yes. So the two pair or lines are parallel.

Line 1 Line 2
Equation 2x-y+1=0 Equation 2x - y +3=0
slope m 1= 2 slope m 2= 2
y-intercept (0, 1) y-intercept (0,3)

Point 1 (1,5)

Now, we have all the values that we need. But how can we
form l 1 when we have only one coordinate?
This is the time we can use the slope to find the location of
the other point/points for us to form l 1.

Always remember that slope has two parts, the rise and the
run.
rise ↑↓
Slope ( m )= →
run ⇆
2 rise ⇅
m 1=2= → →
1 run ⇄

3 rise ⇅
m 2=2= → →
1 run ⇆

If the slope is positive, the line will be slanting to the right.

If the slope is negative, the line will be slanting to the right.

Negative Positive
Yes Ma’am

The graph of positive slope is slanting to

the right and the graph of negative slope
is slanting to the left
Did you understand the difference of the graph of positive
and negative slope?

What is it?

Very Good.
Okay let us graph l 1∧l 2

(Graphing line 1 using slope)

Now, how about line 2, do we have ordered pairs?

Yes we have two, let’s graph it and connect the points to
form line 2

So, you can see line 1 and line 2 do not intersect and the
distance between them do not change. Hence, line 1 and Yes Ma’am
line 2 are parallel, or line 1 is parallel to line 2.

That is how we get the equation of parallel lines and

graphing parallel lines.

Did you understand?

Okay, listen well because later you will be the one to

explain. Let us have another example.

Find the equation of a line that passes through point (4, -1)
and parallel to the equation 3x-2y-6=0.

Given:
3x-2y-6=0
P1=( 4 , −1 )
Hence:
x 1=4
x2 = - 1
l 1 : 3x-2y-6=0

3x - 2y-6=0 → y=mx+b
-2y = -3x+6
−2 y − 3 x +6
=
−2 −2
3
y= − 3 → y=mx+b
2
3
m 1=
2
y intercept: (0,-3)

Now let us find the equation of l 2 and also the y intercept of

l 2 using the formula y − y 1=m(x − x 1)

3
m 1=
2
x 1= 4
y 1=− 1

y − y 1=m(x − x 1)
3
y −(−1)= ( x − 4 )
2

3
y +1= x − 4
2
3
(2) y +1= x − 4 (2)
2

2 y +2=3 x − 8
−3 x +2 y +2+8=0
( −1 ) −3 x +2 y+ 2+8=0(−1)
3 x − 2 y −10=0
← Equation of l 2

Convert to this general equation to slope intercept

form to check if the lines are parallel. If they have the
same slope then two lines are parallel. Yes Ma’am
l 2 :3 x −2 y − 10=0

−2 y=− 3 x+10
−2 y − 3 x +10
=
−2 −2

3
y= x −5 → y=mx+b
2
3
m 2=

y-intercept: (0,-5)
Do they have the same slope?

Yes. So the two pair or lines are parallel.

Line 1 Line 2
Equation 3x-2y-6=0 Equation 3 x − 2 y −10=0
slope 3 slope 3
m 1= m 2=

Point 1 (4, -1)

Yes Ma’am

Let’s graph it.

Did you understand it class? Is it clear? (The students are answering)

Okay, let us see if you really understand. Kindly bring out (The student/s are showing their answer)
your paper and pen. (The student explained)

E. APPLICATION

Let us have an activity.

IT’S YOUR TURN NOW!

Yes Ma’am
Try to solve this problem and if you find the answer, raise
your hand and you will explain your work.

Write the equation of a line passing through the

given point and parallel to the given equation.

2x + y - 5 = 0 ; (1,-1)
We learned about parallel lines where
these are pair of lines that do not intersect
because the distance between them is the
I can see that majority is finished. same. We also learned on how to get the
equation of the second line and how to
Let us check your answers, and I need someone to explain find points using slope.
it to the class.

Did all get the same answer?

Wow, very good.

F. GENERALIZATION
(The students share their ideas)
What have you learned from today’s lesson?

Very good, thank you so much.

VALUES INTEGRATION

Majority always say that why are we studying

mathematics? Is mathematics really that useless?
So think or look around where you are right now and share
where you think can we apply lines and parallel lines in real
life or the concept of lines and parallel lines in real life.

Here are some examples of parallel lines in real life.

Yes Ma’am/Maybe Ma’am

And many more, just look around and you will encounter lines
and/or parallel lines.

How about in situations, real-life situations?

Can we relate parallel lines in life situations?

In a relationship, events (slopes) in life make you and

someone do not meet because these events keep your
distance away with each other. You are equidistant from
one another but for some reason you were headed in the
same direction. You and someone are lines that will never
meet because you’re not meant to meet. It is never written (Students are answering)
in your fate that you will meet.

G. EVALUATION

Let’s have a short quiz to see how much did you learn from
today’s topic. I will give you 8 minutes because I can see
that you already understand our topic.

February 14 is what they call valentine’s day or the day of

love. Is February 14, the only special day or the day of
love? In this activity, match column A to column B. Write
your answer on the space provided to form a quote.
