Basics of Backup

1. Types of Backup
‒ Backups are configured via Backup Plans > Backup Schemes >
Backup Types:
 Full Backup
• Stores all data selected for the backup and forms the base for subsequent
incremental and differential backup

 Incremental Backup
• Stores changes to the data against the most recent backup
• Creates a “chain” of backups, requires corresponding full + all subsequent
incrementals to restore data (F + I + I…)

 Differential Backup
• Stores changes to data against the most recent full backup
• Creates “links” to the full backup, requires corresponding full + differential to
restore data (F+D)

2. Multilevel Backups

‒ Having multiple versions of a backup

‒ Ideally, follow the 3-2-1 rule
‒ Used for:
 Eliminating single points of failure
 Leverage on different types of storage
 Long term retention and separation of backups
‒ Example: D2D2D2T/C

3. What Can Be Backed Up
‒ Acronis Backup can backup the following:
 Disks and volumes
 Files and folders
 Applications: Microsoft Exchange, SQL, SharePoint and Active Directory
‒ When backing up at disk/volume level:
 Can be application aware (single-pass, requires appropriate license)
 Stores the disk/volume file system as a whole (disk imaging)
 Includes all information necessary for OS to boot
 Allows recovery at multiple levels, from entire disks to files to individual
application items

3. What Can Be Backed Up
‒ Single-pass disk backups:
 Supported applications can be backed up as an application-aware
disk/volume backup
 Allows direct recovery of application items such as SQL database,
SharePoint documents and AD SYSVOL
‒ Backing up Microsoft Exchange:
 Disk backup only:
• Allows recovery of entire server or individual files

 Microsoft Exchange Information Store or Mailbox backup:

• Allows direct recovery of Exchange items such as emails, contacts, calendars,
etc.

5. VSS Technologies
‒ Acronis Backup leverages several VSS technologies
‒ Enables live backup of physical and virtual machines
‒ Ensures consistent backup of data, especially for running
applications and VSS-aware databases
‒ Technology used depends on backup source:
 Windows OS and Hyper-V: Microsoft VSS (Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider)
 Linux OS: Acronis VSS Provider (SNAP API)
 VMware vSphere ESX(i): VADP (VMware vStorage API for Data Protection)

5. VSS Technologies
‒ General sequence of operations:
1. Agent starts backup task, runs pre-backup commands if any are
configured
2. Initiates VSS technology, quiesce all VSS-aware databases
3. Runs pre-data capture commands if any are configured
4. Freeze all disk I/O, takes snapshot of disk blocks in use
5. Unfreeze disk I/O, runs post-data capture command if any are configured
6. Starts backup to vault with reference to snapshot
7. Completes backup, perform cataloging
8. Runs post commands if any are configured
9. Agent ends backup task

5. VSS Technologies
‒ Take note:
 Avoid changing the VSS settings in backup options unless recommended
by Acronis Support
 Status of vss-aware applications can be checked using the vssadmin list
writers command in Windows
 Non vss-aware database have to be manually quiesced using backup
option > pre/post data capture commands
 Recommend to have 20% or more free space available on the disk to be
backed for storing snapshots and other meta data during backup
