Making the world a better place

Dirty water
In 2014, people in Flint, Michigan (in the US) started complaining about the taste and smell of
their drinking water. There were reports of people suffering poor health after drinking it.
Researchers and locals made a shocking discovery: the water contained extremely high levels of
lead, a poisonous chemical. When 13-year-old Gitanjali Rao learnt about the issue on the news,
she decided to try to help. She developed a device to measure the amount of lead in water and
called it Tethys. She presented Tethys at the 2018 MAKERS conference, a key international event
for business and technology leaders, and won a prize. She is currently working with scientists to
improve her design and put Tethys on the market. But Tethys isn’t her only invention; she has also
designed a phone app to stop cyberbullying. At the age of 15, Gitanjali was named Time
magazine’s first ‘Kid of the Year’ in 2020. She says that her goals in life are to help solve world
problems and encourage other young people to do the same.

Schools for all

Zuriel Oduwole was only nine years old when her school in Los Angeles, California, took part in
the National History Day Competition. She made her first film, a documentary about Ghana, for
the competition. She requested an interview with two former presidents of Ghana, so she
travelled the US to meet them. She learned about the problems of free education in the country.
Since then, she has been working to promote the education of girls. In 2013, the launch of Zuriel’s
campaign called Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up brought attention to the problems that prevent
children and especially girls from getting an education. She has talked with more than 30 world
leaders and has led discussions at schools all over the world. She has also spoken about the effect
of climate change on education and has taught courses on film-making for children in various
African countries.
