1 Critical analysis of an innovation theory

[This is a critical report, remember to include everything a report should have e.g., table of
contents, executive summary, introductions, and conclusions. The following are key
questions that you need to address for this assessment task and should act as a guide for
you to complete the assignment. Feel free to leave the headings as they are or change them
to reflect your writing style. Each section should also flow seamlessly, remember to carefully
structure your paragraphs as well]

1.1 Brief overview of [insert innovation theory here]

 This is where you would showcase what you know about the theory in a succinct
and straight-to-the-point manner. Key questions to consider would be e.g., where
did it come from, what is the purpose of the innovation theory and where and how
is it used?

1.2 Critical analysis of [insert innovation theory here]

 In this section, you are required to provide an in-depth critical review of your
chosen innovation theory. Key questions to consider include e.g., under which
innovation context is this theory mainly adopted? How does it perform as an
analysis frame and under which conditions is it particularly useful/not so useful?

2 Making sense of innovation in [insert organisation here]

 [This is where you are actually going to apply the theoretical lens you introduced in
the previous section to analyse the innovation strategy, structures and/or
processes of an existing organisation]

2.1 Overview of [insert selected organisation here]

 Conduct a SWOT analysis to build a comprehensive picture of the organisation you

have selected and highlight the key organisational elements that you think might
shape how the organisation goes about innovation. You may even wish to make
the SWOT analysis in a landscape orientation and place it in an Appendix.
Conducting the SWOT analysis is only half the equation, you need to explicate
what the results are actually telling you here. Remember to support all claims with
the appropriate in-text citations.

2.2 Designing an innovation strategy for [insert organisation here] using [insert
innovation theory here]

 Using the innovation theory you selected earlier, build an innovation strategy for
your chosen organisation. Keep in mind that each innovation theory provides a
different focal point for your analysis – some might emphasise what the external
environment is doing, others might be more concerned about knowledge inside the
organisation itself. Use the strengths and benefits of your chosen theory to support
your innovation strategy design choices. Along the same vein, make sure that each
design choice is supported by empirical literature.
 You may have to use third-tier headings in this section to structure your arguments
here, depending on the nature of the innovation theory and what it is able to tell
you.
 Theories of innovation come in all shapes and sizes, you can modify the theory to
fit the case – just make sure you support the modification with the appropriate
literature.

2.3 Innovation performance implications and discussion

 Now that you’ve developed an innovation strategy based on the innovation theory,
it’s time to review how you think it will perform. In this section, you need to detail
what the impact of your chosen approach is on the firm’s innovation performance
e.g., what impact do you predict it will have, where and how much. Support each
claim with empirical evidence from good quality sources.
 Briefly discuss the strengths and limitations of your approach – keeping in mind the
boundaries you had to stick to when adopting the respective innovation theory.
Support each claim with empirical evidence. You might also consider reflecting on
the critical analysis of the tool you conducted before – was it what you expected?
