1 SCOPE AND APPLICATION

This process specification describes the permanent and non-permanent marking of components,
semi-finished products etc. with indelible ink. The marking method covered by this specification is
applied in the incoming goods and production departments. The ink can be applied by rubber stamp,
brush, marker or by spraying (INK-JET method).

Permanent identification

In case of surfaces which are subsequently paint-coated, the ink must ”bleed through” and be visible
on the surface. The ink will only ”bleed through“ if the thickness of the paint coat is ” 45 —m. If the ink
does not bleed through, the marking process must be repeated.

No permanent identification shall be applied on the following surfaces and/or components:

x on bearing surfaces, mating surfaces and skin panel exteriors,

x on the visible side of linings,
x on bolts and screws, (except for the head surfaces)
x in the immediate vicinity of rivet and screw holes.

Please note: Identification of pipes is done in accordance with 80-T-39-1020.

3 PREREQUISITES
3.1 Design documents
The type of marking (method), the location of identification and the symbols to be used shall be
specified. It must also be stated whether the identification has to be protected against synthetic
hydraulic fluid (see 5.3).

3.2 Personnel
Personnel carrying out the work must be trained and familiar with the materials used as well as with
the contents of this process specification.

4 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

Only the inks and paints specified in the data sheets of this process specification may be used.

If other products are needed, they must be approved per AP2039 and AP2234.

5 PROCESS
5.1 Cleaning of the identification location
The areas to be identified must be clean and free from grease prior to applying the identification. If
necessary, clean with cold cleaning agent per 80-T-35-0014.

Please note: For cleaning of chemical/galvanic surface protection with organic solvents, observe the
limitation defined in process specification 80-T-35-0014.

5.2 Marking
The color of markings must provide a clear contrast against the background. The following colors are
used:

Color Application
black/blue for light background

white/yellow for dark background

red only for application of code during incoming inspection

5.3 Protection of identification

The following shall be observed to protect the identification, especially in areas exposed to synthetic
hydraulic fluid:

1. Do not apply the marking ink too thickly.

2. An application of a colorless topcoat is possible only if the identification is indelible (see

Data Sheet 1). For approved products, see 80-T-35-5218.

3. When applying identifications to surfaces with completed surface protection, allowance

must be made for the fact that the identification is resistant to synthetic hydraulic fluids
only after several days or that it is only conditionally resistant to such fluids (see Data
Sheet 1).

4. Protect the identification by a colorless topcoat (see 2) to prevent the identification from
becoming illegible during pressure testing of pipes due to the influence of synthetic
hydraulic fluid.

5.4 Removal of identification

Invalid or incorrect marking ink can be removed or made illegible as follows:

- Marking ink (which has not yet dried) can be removed with organic solvent per 80-T-35-0014.

- Make illegible by means of an X or cross out and possibly write the new marking on top of the
old one.

- Coat with appropriate primer or topcoat (only if adhesion of varnish on identification is

ensured).

6 QUALITY ASSURANCE
Unless otherwise specified in process- or component-specific design, manufacturing or QA
documents, the competent organization unit shall ensure that the following measures are taken:

I For inspection of identification and marking, see A1056.

In addition, the marking shall satisfy the following requirements:

- The marking must be clear and easily legible and show a good contrast with the background.

- The marking must adhere well to the support (check by wiping test).

Inspection of the marking is confirmed in the operation sheet.

7 SAFETY AND HEALTH

Apply the local safety regulations.

It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices
and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
