Module-1:

1. A particle is vibrating in SHM with an amplitude of 10 cm. What fraction of the total

energy is kinetic when displacement is 5 cm.

repectively . Other variables had been kept constants .Write a relation between βB, βO and

respectively. What is the difference between maximum and minimum Intensity ?

Module-1:

1. The natural frequency of a simple harmonic oscillator of mass 2gm is 0.8 rad/s. It

undergoes critically damped motion when placed in viscous medium. Find the

damping force on the oscillator, when its speed is 0.2m/s.

2. The amplitude of an under damped oscillator falls to 1/10 of its initial value after 10

oscillation. If The time period of oscillation is 2s. Find the damping co-efficient.

3. An oscillator has a mass of 0.01kg. a retarding force of 0.1Ns/m and restoring force

of 1000 N/m. Find the logarithmic decrement

4. Find the speed of longitudinal wave propagating in a medium of density 6×108 kg/m

and bulk modulus 1.2×108 N/m.

5. . A uniform string of length 2m and mass 200 gram is under a tension of 800N.

Calculate the speed of transverse wave in the string ?

6. 1Show that the equ. Y=2 sinkt+3 coskt represents simple harmonic motion.

7. The time period of simple harmonic oscillator is 2s. It is subjected to a damping force

proportional to speed with damping co-efficient β=1sec-1. Find the time period and
logarithmic decrement. What should be the value of β for the motion to be critically

damped ?

1. The fringe width in Young’s double slit arrangement is 0.008 cm. What would be the

fringe width if the slit separation is halved and slit-screen distance is doubled?

2. In Young’s double slit experiment ,the screen is 1m away from the slits .The

separation between the slits is 1mm and the distance between the 1st and 4th fringe

is 1.2 mm. Determine the wavelength of light used.

3. What is zone plate .Discuss its theory and its construction.

4. Give a comparison between Positive zone plate and convex lens .

5. The principal focus of a positive zone plate is 60 cm for a light of wavelength 6.0×10 -

5 cm. Compute the radii of first two transparent zones .

6. Find the radius of 1st half period zone in a zone plate behaving like a convex lens of

focal length 50cm for a light wavelength 5000 Ao ?

7. What is incoherent superposition ?

1. Explain how the Band theory of solids explains conductors, semiconductors and

insulators and show the band structures in conductors, semiconductors and

insulators.

2. What is the significance of numerical aperture in optical fibre?

3. What is an optical fibre? Give its applications.

4. Which pumping sources are used in optical fibres?

5. Explain the constructions of an optical fibre.

1. Using Gauss divergence theorem, prove that the volume of the sphere of radius r is 4/3

2. An electron and a proton is placed inside a sphere of radius 15 cm. Calculate the net flux

coming out of the surface of the sphere.

4. State Ampere’s circuital law .

5. Obtain differential form of Ampere’s circuital law.

1. What is black body radiation?

2. Write down one statement of Heisenberg’s uncertainity relation.

3. Plot the variation of uncertainity in momentum Δp with uncertainity in position Δx

according to Heisenberg’s uncertainity principle.

4. Calculate the de Broglie wavelength of a particle of mass 10g moving with a speed of

310m/s.

5. Write the time dependent Schrodinger equation for the particle.

6. The de Broglie wavelength of a particle moving with a velocity 200 m/s is 14.14A0. What

will be de Broglie wavelength if kinetic energy is doubled?

Module-1:

(a) Derive the differential equation for DHO .Give its solution. Differentiate between under

damped, over damped and critically damped harmonic oscillation including graphical

representation.

(b) What do you mean by SHM ? Set up a differential equation of SHM.

(a) Obtain the steady state solution for displacement when a damped harmonic oscillator

is subjected to an external periodic force .

(b) Two pendulums of mass 100gm each are suspended by mass less rigid rods of length 10

cm each. The two masses are coupled by a mass less spring of spring const K=250 dyne/cm.

Determine the normal mode frequencies of coupled oscillator.

spring of force constant k. Set up differential equation for coupled system in normal co-

ordinates.
