KEY CONCEPTS
where the nonnegative integer n is called the degree of the polynomial and coefficient a0, a1,…, an are real numbers.
If an ≠ 0, then n (the highest exponent) is the degree of the polynomial. an xn the term containing the highest
exponent is called the leading term. The real number a0, an-1,…, a1, a0 in a polynomial are called coefficients. Thus, an
is the coefficient of xn, an-1 is he coefficient of xn-1, and so on. an is called the leading coefficient; it is the coefficient of
the leading term. The number a0 is the constant term of the polynomial expression and its degree is zero. The real
number 0 is called the zero polynomial and it has no degree.
The terms of a polynomial may be written in any order. However, we often follow the convention of writing
the terms in decreasing powers of the variable x. In this case, the polynomial is said to be in standard form.
If n roots of an unknown polynomial equation of degree n are known, then the polynomial equation can be
formed.
Example 2. What is the integral polynomial equation whose roots are , and 1.
Solution: Write the given roots in a factor form, then solve.
x= x= x=1
2x + 1 = 0 2x -1 = 0 x - 1= 0
Thus, (2x +1) (2x -1) (x - 1) = 0
(4x2 - 1) (x - 1) = 0
4x3 - 4x2 - x + 1 = 0
Example 3. Form a polynomial equation with integral coefficients whose only roots are 1, -1, 2, and - 2.
Solution: Write the given roots into factor form, then solve.
Multiply all factor forms. The result would be the polynomial equation.
(x - 1) (x + 1) (x - 2) (x + 2) = 0
(x2 - 1) (x2 - 4) = 0
x4 - 5x2 + 4 = 0

FINDING POLYNOMIAL EQUATIONS GIVEN ITS FACTORED FORM
Solution: a. (x -1) (x - 2) = 0 b. (x + 2) (x + 1) = 0
x2 - 3x + 2 = 0 x2 + 3x + 2 = 0
Example 5. Give the polynomial equation whose roots are 1 multiplicity 3, 2 and - 2.
Solution: From the given roots, write the factors of the polynomial equation.
Thus, (x - 1) (x - 1) (x - 1) (x - 2) (x + 2) = 0
(x - 1) (x - 1) = x2 - 2x + 1
(x2 - 2x + 1) (x - 1) = x3 - 3x2 + 3x -1
