Product Notes
This section lists all the product-specific notes that may apply to the requirements information for
Content Management Interoperability Services. The Appendix B, General Notes section lists notes
that apply to all products.
The following are the general notes:
• x64 refer to the 64-bit architecture, which includes AMD64 and Intel 64.
• For CMIS running in a web application server environment, all Java 6.0.x and 7.0.x versions that
are supported by each web application server configuration listed in the Java Version Support,
page 49 table are supported. No support for Java 1.5.x.
• Supports 64-bit version of web application server.
• Supports only 64-bit version of JDK.
• Web servers internal to the supported web application servers are supported.
• Web server associated with a web application server, whether internal or external, must also
support chunked requests. This means that web servers forward HTTP requests using chunked
transfer encoding (as described in the HTTP/1.1 protocol) to the back-end web application server.
If chunked requests are not supported, then the client should use UCF Alternative Chunking
mode. For details on configuring and using UCF Alternative Chunking mode, refer to the EMC
Documentum Web Development Kit 6.7 Development Guide.
• Only the following forward proxy configurations are supported
— Auto configuration script
— Explicitly specifying the proxy server (for example, the host and port)
— Auto detect settings, configured using ProxyCfg.exe (proxy configuration tool)
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 was tested for this release.

Disk space [2] 40 GB
[1] The amount of RAM that is available after taking into consideration all other RAM utilization
requirements. We recommend that you run the xPlore and Content Server on separate host
machines.
[2] If you are installing Content Server on a UNIX or Linux system, 2 GB of space are required
in the /var/tmp directory. If you use a temp directory that shares the same disk partition as
the installation destination, you must add an additional 2 GB to the disk requirement for the
installation destination.
[3] On a Linux host, 4 MB minimum shared memory allocated and semaphores must be enabled.
[4] The amount of memory required depends on a variety of factors such as the number of
docbasic methods being run, the number of docbasic method server worker threads, the number
of Java methods, and so on. Insufficient memory in the system might generate errors such as

• In 6.7 SPx, clients using UCF .NET are not compatible with DFS 7.x for content transfer since it
requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP2. However, UCF 7.x (embedded in DFS) requires
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0.
• Business Object Framework dependencies — some services delivered with Documentum
Foundation Services depend on Service-based Business Objects (SBOs). Because SBOs are
downloaded to the service dynamically from the global registry, environments that use these
services must have a correctly configured global registry, and the global registry credentials
must be set in the Documentum Foundation Services dfc.properties file when Documentum
Foundation Services is deployed. The following paragraph provide details about specific services.
• CommentService is dependent on SBOs included in the DCE DAR (formerly DocApp). The
CommentService will not work with the default DAR installed by Content Server 7.0. To
get CommentService functionality, clients must update to the latest DCE DAR (7.0). The
TaskManagement service requires that the latest Process Engine be installed on Content Server.
Process Engine installs the BPM DAR, which contains SBOs and modules required by the service.
If chunked requests are not supported then the client should use UCF Alternative Chunking
mode. For details on configuring and using UCF Alternative Chunking mode, refer to the EMC
Documentum Web Development Kit 6.7 Development Guide.

Documentum Foundation Services System Requirements

• Only the following forward proxy configurations are supported:

— Auto configuration script
— Explicitly specifying the proxy server (for example, the host and port)
— Auto detect settings, configured using ProxyCfg
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 was tested for this release.

Additional Supporting Environments

Native 64-bit Support

Documentum 6.5 and later versions provide native 64-bit support such that 64-bit Documentum
applications run on 64-bit operating systems. In Documentum 6.7, the Content Server has been ported
to a 64-bit architecture. The 64-bit Content Server must be installed on 64-bit operating systems.

Prerequisites to run Documentum versions 6.5 and later in the native 64-bit mode — You must
ensure that your 64-bit environment comprises the following prerequisite components before you
install Documentum 6.5 or later products: 64-bit processor, 64-bit operating system, 64-bit Java
Virtual Machine, and 64-bit web application server (if needed). Ensure that the web application server
is bundled with 64-bit Java Virtual Machine.

64-bit support in browser environment — From Documentum 6.6, 64-bit browsers are supported
in a 64-bit client environment. However, 32-bit browsers will continue to be supported in a 64-bit
client environment. The native 64-bit support takes full advantage of 64-bits of address space and the
concurrent use of more than 4 GB of executable memory.

64-bit support in web application server environment — Documentum 6.5 and later versions
continue to support 32-bit versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Documentum 6.6
and later supports 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition with Service Pack 1.

IPv6 Support
Documentum 6.5 and later supports dual-stack (IPv4 or IPv6) and native IPv4 operations. In addition
to this, Documentum 6.5 and later products, which are Java-based applications, also support native
IPv6 operation. Support for dual-stack operation enables Documentum 6.5 and later products to use
the appropriate protocol (IPv4 or IPv6) when communicating with third-party products and other
Documentum products. Documentum Foundation Classes determines the operating mode, and by
default, Documentum Foundation Classes is configured for dual-stack and native IPv6 operation.
The Documentum Foundation Classes Installation Guide provides information on how to configure
Documentum Foundation Classes for native IPv4 operation.
Note: The following general notes apply to the IPv6 support:
• By default, Content Server 6.5 and later is configured for dual-stack operation. Content Server
deployed on a dual-stack environment can be configured for native IPv4 operation. EMC
Documentum Content Server 6.6 Administration Guide provides more information.
• IPv6 support is not provided for Interactive Delivery Services Accelerated 6.6 release.
• Information on protocol support for third-party products is provided in the third-party product
documentation.
• Content Transformation Services supports dual mode (IPv4 and IPv6).
• The Y symbol in the tables denotes the support started with 6.5 release.

Appendix B
General Notes

This appendix lists all the general notes that may apply to the requirements information discussed in
this guide. Please see the General Notes section in the individual product chapters’ for any exceptions.
The following are the general notes:
• Only the 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating systems
are supported for Content Server and application servers in Documentum 7.x.
• In addition to the specified third-party vendor version, any available preceding minor version of
the same third-party product are also supported.
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4 was tested for this release.
• Oracle Solaris 11 Update 1 was tested for this release.

55
General Notes

56
Appendix C
Compatibility and Upgrade Matrices

This section provides the product compatibility and upgrade paths for Documentum 7.x.
Compatibility refers to software components that are intended to work together seamlessly. For
example, different clients that can independently modify objects in the repository without conflicts,
or an environment where Content Server applications, repositories, or client applications of different
versions coexist in an implementation (mixed version environments) without conflicts or errors.
Upgrade refers to moving directly from a previous version of the software to a more recent version.
When hardware and third-party applications are compatible with the new version, and the existing
version supports direct upgrade, an in-place move from an earlier to a later version of EMC products
can be performed.
Migration refers to moving customizations from one Content Server instance to another. It can refer
to moving from an unsupported environment to a supported one, such as an upgrade that cannot
be done in place due to lack of compatibility or need to update/change hardware, or the need to
move from an unsupported version of an operating system, platform, or database to a supported
one. It can also refer to moving data from one location, server, or repository to another. In this
context, migration does not refer to moving from one platform to another, such as from Solaris to
Linux, which is neither tested nor supported.

Compatibility
Before you consider the compatibility of a product with Documentum 7.x, keep in mind that only
specific Documentum 6.7 SP2 client products are compatible with Documentum 7.x Content Server.
See Compatibility Matrix, page 59 for the list of supported products.
Note:
• For compatibility information between RKM and non-RKM repositories and their limitations,
refer to the EMC Documentum Content Server 6.7 Installation Guide.
• Product documentation might contain references to client applications and functionality that
are not supported in the 7.x release, though these applications and functionality may become
compatible in a future release. Only those client applications documented as compatible in the
EMC Documentum 7.x Environment and System Requirements Guide are supported in 7.x.

57
Compatibility and Upgrade Matrices

Mixed Version Compatibility

When clients can work with Content Servers that are from a different major version family, this
system configuration is referred to as a mixed version configuration. You can set up a mixed
version configuration when you want to migrate only the client or server side of your production
environment. In a mixed version configuration, most customers migrate the server side of their
production environment first.
Note: You can also have a mixed version configuration between different products in the same
version family (for example, 6.6 and 6.7).
In a mixed version configuration, functionality provided by the later version product is typically not
available to the lower version product. The mixed version products work fine together, but the new
functionality provided by the later version product is not exposed or it is disabled. In some cases,
new functionality provided by the later version product can cause a lower version product not to
work properly.
Client applications also contain a combination of artifacts (modules, aspects, Type-Based Objects
(TBOs), or Service-Based Objects (SBOs)) that contribute to mixed version compatibility or
incompatibility, depending on how these artifacts were developed. The modules, TBOs, and other
artifacts are downloaded from the Content Server whereas SBOs are downloaded from the global
registry. These artifacts are stored on the application server. The application server also contains
a version of Documentum Foundation Classes (DFC), typically installed by the client application.
The version of DFC is the same version as the client application.
With the release of Documentum 6.7 SP2, Content Server 7.x can now work with 6.7 SP2 clients,
which have been decoupled from the platform. For more information, see the “Compatibility and
Upgrade” chapter in the EMC Documentum 6.7 SP2 Environment and System Requirements Guide.
A scenario where you have 6.7 SPx client applications with 6.7 SPx Content Server, and Documentum
7.x global registry is supported only if the SBOs installed on the 7.x global registry are compatible
with 6.7 Content Server .
If you have 6.7 SPx client applications with 7.0 Content Server and 6.7 SPx global registry, the 6.7 SPx
clients cannot use some of the 7.x Content Server features. In addition, there may be dependencies on
the 6.7 SPx global registry, which may be incompatible with the Documentum 7.x features. In this
case, you need to upgrade the global registry to 7.x.
For 6.x SPx and 7.x clients applications, compile the artifacts with JDK 1.6 or 1.7. Table 65, page 59
summarizes which combinations of client application, DFC and JDK versions on the client application
server, global registry version, and JDK versions of the modules, aspects, TBOs and SBOs enable
access to 6.x Content Server.

** CIS artifacts (DAR file) - same version as CIS Server - must be deployed on the CIS repository,
either manually or during CIS installation. The DAR must be deployed on the global registry, as
well.

Upgrade and Migration

This section provides the upgrade matrices for Content Server and related components. When you
plan for upgrade or migration to Documentum 7.x, consider the following points:
• Direct in-place upgrade to Documentum 7.x is supported from Documentum 6.5 SP3, but is only
supported if the existing operating system, database, and hardware combination is also supported
for Documentum 7.x. Otherwise, a migration is required to move to a supported platform.
• For a supported upgrade scenario, all third-party components must also be supported in both the
6.5 SP3 and 7.x environments. This only applies to the Content Server upgrade; it does not imply
support for any clients or customizations in the environment to be upgraded.
• Only third-party components supported in Documentum 7.x will work with Documentum 7.x. If
the third-party component (such as operating system, database, or application server) does not
have a direct upgrade path to the supported version, then direct upgrade for Content Server
is not possible.
• Moving data from one operating system/database to another, such as from Solaris to Linux, is not
supported. These scenarios require a fresh installation and engagement with Professional Services.
• Migration of legacy or custom clients is not supported.

Upgrade Matrices
Notations used in the tables:
• Y - QA tested and/or paper certified
• Y* - Read the notes at the end of the table
The upgrade matrix specifically deals with the possible upgrade paths for Content Server and
related server components.

* Direct in-place upgrade from Documentum 6.5 SP2 to Documentum 7.0 is not supported.

Note: To upgrade from a 32–bit Content Server to a 64–bit Content Server directly, your underlying
operating system and database version must be 64–bit. Otherwise, you must first upgrade the
operating system and database before upgrading Content Server. The EMC Documentum System
Upgrade and Migration Guide provide more information about upgrading Content Server.

Note: The handling of exceptions resulting from SOAP faults in the DFS .NET client productivity
layer changed in version 6.5 SP3. If you are upgrading a .NET productivity layer client application
from a version prior to 6.5 SP3, you will need to change the way your application handles these
exceptions before it will compile and run. For details, refer to the section titled "Handling SOAP
faults in the .NET productivity layer" in the Documentum Foundation Services Development Guide.

Note: Many products consist of multiple installed components (such as WAR file, DAR file, or
DocApp). Mixing versions of these components (such as 6.0 WAR file and 6.5 DAR file) for a
particular (6.5) product version is not supported. It is recommended that you use DARs instead of
DocApps whenever possible.
