II. Read the following passage, and then answer the questions
below it.
Passage 1
Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by
people on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for
people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures
around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news stories
of their own country and all over the world every day, either by watching
TV or reading newspapers.

17
ÔN TẬP ANH VĂN CƠ BẢN 2 – K11

Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the

18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers.
How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to print? Why do
they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper
story?
Firstly, it is important to report new stories. TV stations can report
news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the
same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may
print completely different stories to those on TV.
Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People
don't want to read stories about everyday life. As a result, many stories
are about some kinds of danger and seem to be "bad" news. For example,
newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely, instead they
print stories about plane accidents.
Another factor is also very important in many news stories. Many
people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read
stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the
stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different
from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

Passage 2
How can we find true friendship in this material and practical world?
Friendship involves recognition or familiarity with another’s personality.
Friends often share likes and dislikes, interests, and passion and many
other things. True friendship involves action: doing something for
someone else while expecting nothing in return; sharing thoughts and
feelings without fear of judgment or negative criticism. True friendship
involves relationship. Friendship takes time: time to get to know each
other, time to build shared memories, time to invest in each other's
growth.

19
ÔN TẬP ANH VĂN CƠ BẢN 2 – K11

Trust is essential to true friendship. We all need someone with whom

we can share our lives, thoughts, feelings, disappointment and failures.
We need to be able to share our deepest secrets with someone, without
worrying that those secrets will end up on the Internet the next day!
Failing to be trustworthy with those intimate secrets can destroy a
friendship in a hurry. Faithfulness and loyalty are keys to true friendship.
Without them, we often feel betrayed, left out, and lonely. In true
friendship, there is no backbiting, no negative thoughts, no turning away.
True friendship requires certain sympathy. Real friends encourage
one another and forgive one another where there has been an offense.
Genuine friendship supports during times of struggle. Friends are
dependable. In true friendship, unconditional love develops. We love our
friends no matter what and we always want the best for our friends.

Passage 3
Money is something we all take for granted in our lives. Some of us
may wish we had more of it but we all recognize it when we see it,
whether in the form of coins, notes or cheques. It is difficult to imagine
how people managed without money. In the earliest periods of human
history, people used to exchange goods directly. They would exchange
things they had plenty for things that they were in need of. For example,
they might offer food for tools. This method of exchange, which is known
as “barter”, has many disadvantages. Certain goods may be difficult to
carry; they may not last long, or may be impossible to divide into smaller
units. It can also be difficult to know the worth of something compared
with other goods.
According to historians, the first money, in the sense we understand
it today, consisted of gold coins produced about 2,500 years ago. Gold,
being a very acceptable to everyone and they were still being used at the
beginning of this century, although they have now been replaced by paper
money and coins made of ordinary metals.

Passage 4
Your body needs energy, protein, minerals, vitamins and fiber. In
order to get all of these it is important to have a varied and balanced diet

22
ÔN TẬP ANH VĂN CƠ BẢN 2 – K11

and to eat the right amount. Your body ‘burns’ food to get energy: the
amount of energy provided by food is measured in units called calories.
How many calories do you need? This depends on your weight and
on what you do. When you are asleep, your body uses nearly one calorie
an hour for every kilogram of weight. So a person who weighs seventy
kilos uses about 560 calories while sleeping for eight hours; in other
words, he needs about 1,680 calories just to stay alive for 24 hours, even
without doing anything. More calories are needed for different activities –
from 100 calories an hour for reading or watching TV, to 350 calories an
hour for playing football. To calculate the number of calories needed per
day for an average person, first find out that person’s ideal weight. (Your
ideal weight is what you should weigh). It depends on your height and
your build, and it may be very different from your present weight!) Then
multiply the correct weight (in kilograms) by 40 for a woman or 46 for a
man. A 57-kilo woman may need about 2,300 calories a day – more if she
does heavy physical work or a lot of sport, less if she is very inactive.
If you eat more than you need, the extra calories turn into fat; if you
eat less than you need, the body burns fat to get energy and you lost
weight. One way of losing weight is by dieting – eating less. Another way
is to go on eating the same amount, but to increase your body’s need for
energy by taking more exercise. But be careful. It is important to slim –
or to start an exercise programme – gradually. Don’t try to lose a lot of
weight fast. It doesn’t usually work and it can be dangerous.

Passage 5
"Where is the university?" is a question many visitors to Cambridge

found around the university. The university is the city. You can find the

professors of the thirty-one colleges.
Cambridge was an already developing town long before the first
students and teachers arrived 800 years ago. It grew up by the river
Granta, as the Cam was once called. A bridge was built over the river as
early as 875. In the 14th and 15th centuries more and more land was used
for college buildings. The town grew much faster in the 19th century after
the opening of the railway in 1845. Cambridge became a city in 1951 and
now it has the population of over 100,000. Many young students want to
study at Cambridge. Thousands of people from all over the world come to

Passage 6
After two decades of growing student enrollments and
economic prosperity, business schools in the United States have
started to face harder times. Only Harvard's MBA School has shown a
substantial increase in enrollment in recent years. Both Princeton and
Stanford have seen decreases in their enrollments. Since 1990, the
number of people receiving Masters in Business Administration (MBA)
degrees has dropped about 3 percent to 75,000, and the trend of lower
enrollment rates is expected to continue.
There are two factors causing this decrease in students seeking an MBA
degree. The first one is that many graduates of four-year colleges are
finding that an MBA degree does not guarantee a plush job on Wall
Street, or in other financial districts of major American cities. Many of
the entry-level management jobs are going to students graduating with
Master of Arts degrees in English and the humanities as well as those
holding MBA degrees. Students have asked the question "Is an MBA
degree really what I need to be best prepared for getting a good job?" The
second major factor has been the cutting of American payrolls and the
lower number of entry-level jobs being offered. Business needs are
changing, and MBA schools are struggling to meet the new demands.

Passage 7
History books recorded that the first film with sound was The Jazz
Singer in 1927. But sound films, or talkies, did not suddenly appear after
years of silent screenings. From the earliest public performances in 1896,
films were accompanied by music and sound effects. These were
produced by a single pianist, a small band, or a full-scale orchestra; large
movie theatres could buy sound-effect machines. Research into sound
that was reproduced at exactly at the same time as the pictures – called
“synchronized sound” – began soon after the very first films were shown.
With synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen could sing and
speak. As early as 1896, the newly invented gramophone, which played a
large disc carrying music and dialogue, was used as a sound system. The
biggest disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become
unsynchronized if, for example, the gramophone needle jumped or if the
27
ÔN TẬP ANH VĂN CƠ BẢN 2 – K11

speed of the projector changed. This system was only effective for a
single song or dialogue sequence.
In the “sound-on-film” system, sound was recorded as a series of
marks on celluloid which could be read by an optical sensor. These
signals would be placed on the film alongside the image, guaranteeing
synchronization. Short feature films were produced in this way as early as
1922. This system eventually brought us “talking pictures”.

Passage 8
Sometimes you know things about people the first time you see them,
for example, that you want to be friends with them or that you don’t trust
them. But perhaps this kind of intuition isn’t as hard to explain as it may
seem. For instance, people give out body language signal all the time. The
way you hold your body, head and arms tells people about your mood. If

28

you hold your arms tightly at your sides, or fold them across your chest,
people will generally feel that you are being defensive. Holding your head
to one side shows interest in the others, while an easy, open posture
indicates that you are self-confident. All this affects the way you feel
about someone.
Also, a stranger may remind you of a meeting with someone. This
may be because of something as simple as the fact that he or she is
physically similar to someone who treated you well or badly. Your feeling
about a stranger could be influenced by a smell in the air that brings to
mind a place where you were happy as a child. Since even a single word
can bring back a memory such as that, you may never realize it is

Passage 9
Langston Hughes was one of the greatest American writers of the
twentieth century. He was born in Joplin, Missouri, and moved to
Cleveland at the age of 14. Several years later he spent one year in
Mexico before attending Columbia University in New York. For a few
years after that, he roamed the world as a seaman, visiting ports around
the world and writing some poetry. He returned to the United States and
attended Lincoln University, where he won the Witter Bynner Prize for
undergraduate poetry. After graduating in 1928, he traveled to Spain and
to Russia with the help of a Guggenheim fellowship. His novels include
Not without Laughter (1930) and The Big Sea (1940). He wrote an
autobiography in 1956 and also published several collections of poetry.
The collections include The Weary Blues (1926), The Dream Keeper
(1932), Shakespeare in Harlem (1942), Fields of Wonder (1947), One
Way Ticket (1947), and Selected Poems (1959). A man of many talents,
Hughes was also a lyricist, librettist, and a journalist. As an older man in
the 1960s, he spent much of his time collecting poems from Africa and
from African-Americans to popularize black writers. Hughes is one of the
most accomplished writers in American literary history, and he is seen as
one of the artistic leaders of the Harlem Renaissance, the period when a

Passage 10
Scientists have established that influenza viruses taken from man can
cause disease in animals. In addition, man can catch the disease from
animals. In fact, a greater numbers of wild birds seem to carry the virus
without showing any evidences of illness. Some scientists conclude that a
large family of influenza virus may have evolved in the bird kingdom, a
group that has been on earth 100 million years and is able to carry the
virus without contracting the disease. There is even convincing evidence
to show that virus strains are transmitted from place to place and from
continent to continent by migrating birds.
31

It is known that two influenza viruses can recombine when both are
present in an animal at the same time. The result of such recombination is
a great variety of strains containing different H and N spikes. This raises
the possibility that a human influenza virus can recombine with an
influenza virus from a lower animal to produce an entirely new spike.
Research is underway to determine if that is the way major new strains
come into being. Another possibility is that two animal influenza strains
may recombine in a pig, for example, to produce a new strain which is
transmitted to man.

The loss of the jobs and persistent unemployment in the industrial

countries is due mainly to changes in technology. It is thought to be

misleading to blame job losses on the shift of corporations from the (1)

……….. countries to the Third World.

The present technological developments have been compared to a

Third Industrial Revolution. The first coming in the 19 th century was (2)

emerged with the use of oil and the electro-dynamo. The third, the present

one, is driven by computers, biotechnology and information technology.

However, there can be seen weaknesses in the newest of industrial

(3)………………... The technology is advancing so fast and productivity

is rising so fast that we are left with a big problem. Because of the loss in

jobs, caused largely by this new technology, there will not be enough

people with money to (4)……….all these products.

Technology as definitely enhanced our standard of living, even our

quality of life. But as the capacity to produce expands and the lack of

The last two decades have seen enormous changes in the way

people's lives are affected by IT. Twenty years ago, few people had (1)

………… to a computer whilst today most people use them at work,

home or school and use of e-mail and the Internet is an every day event.

These developments have brought many (2)…………. to our lives.

E-mail makes communication much easier and more immediate. This has

numerous benefits for business, commerce, and education. The World

Wide Web means that information on every conceivable subject is now

available to us. Clearly, for many people this has made life (3)

However, not all the effects of the new technology have been

beneficial. Many people feel that the widespread use of e-mail is

destroying traditional forms of communication such as letter writing,

telephone and face-to-face (4)………….. In addition, the huge size of the

Web means it is almost impossible to control and regulate. This has led to

many concerns regarding children accessing unsuitable websites.

In conclusion, developments in IT have brought many benefits, yet I

believe developments relating to new technology in the future are (5)

In the 20th century, magazines have been a major growth area of

some US magazines, such as The Saturday Evening Post, has succumbed
to competition of television, many continue to have enormous

The shift in attention of a mass (5)…………….from reading such

An important determinant of what is considered a hobby, as distinct

Now every four years the Olympic Games for the disabled are held, if

The Games, which have been a great success in promoting

disappointment for those who organize and take part in the games,
however, has been the unwillingness of the International Olympic

What is alarming about the case of the Bengal tiger is that this

extinction will have been caused almost entirely by poachers who,

according to some sources, are not always (2)………….in material gain

but in personal gratification. This is an example of the callousness that is

contributing to the problem of extinction. Animals such as the Bengal

tiger, as well as other endangered species, are valuable parts of the

world's ecosystem. International laws protecting these animals must be

enacted to (3)………………their survival and the survival of our planet.

Countries around the world have begun to deal with the problem in
