PHRASE AND CLAUSE

1. A phrase is a collection of words that may have nouns or verbs, but it does not have a
subject doing a verb.
The following are examples of phrases:
leaving behind the dog
before the first test
between ignorance and intelligence
because of her glittering smile
smashing into a fence
after the devastation
broken into thousands of pieces
In these examples above, we will find nouns (dog, fence, test, devastation, ignorance,
intelligence, thousands, pieces). You also have some verbs (leaving, smashing), but in no
case is the noun functioning as a subject doing the verb. They are all phrases.
2. A clause is a collection of words that has a subject that is actively doing a verb.
The following are examples of clauses:
since she laughs at timid men
when the saints go marching in
I despise individuals of low character
because she smiled at him.
