Ethical decision making: Case 5

Sara is hired to create a database for a hospital. The client wants to save money by not encrypting
patient data, even though it contains sensitive health information.

Sara believes this puts patient privacy at risk. Hackers or unauthorized employees could easily access this
information.

Sara has warned the client about the potential dangers, but they still want to proceed.

Sara must decide if she should go ahead with the project as requested or refuse.

Applying the Code: Case 5

This case involves privacy concerns. The hospital has a duty to protect patient data. Sara’s responsibility
is to inform the client about the risks. If the client insists on using weak security, Sara may need to refuse
the project to protect patient privacy.

Ethical decision making: Case 6

Alex is asked to develop a website for an online store. The client wants to collect data about customers
without their consent, including tracking their behavior and buying habits.

Alex feels this is an invasion of customer privacy. The client insists it’s necessary for marketing purposes.

Alex has to decide whether to build the website as requested or refuse due to privacy concerns.

This case involves privacy and consent. Collecting personal data without consent is unethical. Alex’s role
is to educate the client about the need for transparency and consent. If the client refuses, Alex should
not build the system to protect customer privacy.
