CHAPTER 6

GRADE 4
SAFETY AND FIRST AID (NOTES)
I. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Accident- An unexpected incident that lead to damage or injury.
2. Zebra Crossing- An area of road painted with broad white lines, meant for
crossing the road.
3. Pavement- A raised path for pedestrians to walk at the side of a road.
II. FILL IN THE BLANKS:
1. We should wear clothes made of cotton in the kitchen.
2. Always use a step ladder to reach things stored on high shelves.
3. Do not throw water when a fire is caused by electrical faults.
4. Never accept any eatables from strangers.
5. Accidents can be avoided if we follow safety rules.
6. First aid can help an injured person before the doctor arrives.
7. While riding two-wheelers, always wear a helmet.
8. Antiseptic creams help to kill the germs and heal the wound faster.

III. GIVE TWO EXAMPLES FOR EACH:


1. Things in the first aid box
Ans: Band aid, Gauze pads

2. Antiseptic medicines.
Ans: Dettol, Savlon

3. Two flammable substances


Ans: Kerosene, Petrol

4. Diseases caused by animal bites


Ans: Rabies, Plague
III. ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:
1. List any three ways to prevent fire accidents.
Ans: a) Never play with lighters and matchsticks.
b) Stay away from fireplaces and stoves
c) Do not wear synthetic clothes while handling fire as they can catch fire
easily
2. Write down a few safety rules to be followed in public places.
Ans: a) Never touch any unidentified items lying in public places.
b) Never share your personal details like address or phone number with
strangers
c) Know the entry and exit points of a mall or a restaurant which will be
helpful in case of emergency
3. How can we keep ourselves safe on the road?
Ans: We can keep ourselves safe on road by following these rules:
a) Wear helmet while riding a bicycle.
b) Walk on the pavement or footpath.
c) Always cross the road only at zebra crossings.
4. Define first aid. 5. Explain briefly the first aid given in the following cases:
a) Cuts b) Insect bites c) Burns
Ans: The first or immediate help given to an injured person before taking to the
hospital is known as first aid.
a) Cuts
 Wash the cut with clean water to remove dirt and dust.
 Apply antiseptic cream to kill germs.
 Use a bandage to cover deep cuts
b) Insect bites
 In case of a bee sting, remove the stinger left behind by the bee as quickly
as possible.
 Do not let the patient scratch the place where the bee has stung.
 Wash the area with soap and water and apply a cool wet cloth to reduce
pain and swelling.
c) Burns
 Cool the burn under cold running water
 Apply an antiseptic cream on the burn to help it heal faster

5. What is an antiseptic? What is its role in a first aid procedure?


Ans: Antiseptic is a substance or chemical that slows down the growth of
disease causing germs. It is used to prevent skin infections and to ease pain
from skin irritations. It is used to treat minor cuts, scrapes, or burns.
