Quiz#1 in Shear and Moment in Beams

Problem Solving:
Instructions: Solve accordingly. Enclose your final answer in a box.

A. SHEAR AND MOMENT IN BEAMS

Instruction: Write shear and moment equations for the beams in the following problems.
In each problem, let x be the distance measured from left end of the beam. Also, draw shear
and moment diagrams, specifying values at all change of loading positions and at points of
zero shear. Neglect the mass of the beam in each problem.

1. Beam loaded as shown in Fig. P-1.

2. Cantilever beam carrying the load shown in Fig. P-2.

3. Beam loaded as shown in Fig. P-3.

B. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOAD, SHEAR, AND MOMENT

Instruction: Without writing shear and moment equations, draw the shear and moment
diagrams for the beams specified in the following problems. Give numerical values at all
change of loading positions and at all points of zero shear.

1. Beam loaded as shown in Fig. P-B1.

2. Overhang beam loaded by a force and a couple as shown in Fig. P-B2.

C. LOAD AND MOMENT DIAGRAMS FOR A GIVEN SHEAR DIAGRAM

Instruction: In the following problem, draw moment and load diagrams corresponding to
the given shear diagram. Specify values at all change of load positions and at all points of
zero shear.

1. Shear diagram as shown in Fig. P-C1.

2. Shear diagram as shown in Fig. P-C2.

D. MOVING LOADS
1. A tractor weighing 3000 lb, with a wheel base of 9 ft, carries 1800 lb of its load on the rear
wheels. Compute the maximum moment and maximum shear when crossing a 14 ft-span.
2. A truck and trailer combination crossing a 12-m span has axle loads of 10, 20, and 30 kN
separated respectively by distances of 3 and 5 m. Compute the maximum moment and
maximum shear developed in the span.

E. STRESSES IN BEAMS
1. A simply supported beam, 2 in wide by 4 in high and 12 ft long is subjected to a
concentrated load of 2000 lb at a point 3 ft from one of the supports. Determine the
maximum fiber stress and the stress in a fiber located 0.5 in from the top of the beam at
midspan.
2. Determine the minimum height h of the beam shown in Fig. P-E1, if the flexural stress is not
to exceed 20 MPa.

F. BEAM DEFLECTIONS
F.1 Double-integration Method.
1. Determine the maximum deflection δ in a simply supported beam of length L carrying
a uniformly distributed load of intensity wo applied over its entire length.
2. As shown in Fig. P-F1-2, a simply supported beam carries two symmetrically placed
concentrated loads. Compute the maximum deflection δ.
3. For the beam loaded as shown in Fig. P-F1-3, calculate the slope of the elastic curve
over the right support.

F.2 Moment Diagrams by Parts

1. For the beam loaded as shown in Fig. P-F2-1, compute the moment of area of the M
diagrams between the reactions about both the left and the right reaction. (Hint:
Resolve the trapezoidal loading into a uniformly distributed load and a uniformly
varying load.).

2. Determine the value of the couple M for the beam loaded as shown in Fig. P-F2-2 so
that the moment of area about A of the M diagram between A and B will be zero. What
is the physical significance of this result?

F.3 Area-moment Method

1. Compute the midspan deflection of the symmetrically loaded beam shown in Fig. P-F1-
2. Check your answer by letting a = L/2 and comparing with the answer to Problem
F1-2.

2. For the beam in Fig. P-F3-2, find the value of EIδ at 2 ft from R2. (Hint: Draw the
reference tangent to the elastic curve at R2.)

G. WELDED AND RIVETED CONNECTIONS

1. A bracket is bolted to a vertical stanchon and carries a vertical load of 50 kN. Assuming that
the total shearing stress in a bolt is proportional to the relative displacement of the bracket
and the stanchion in the neighbourhood of the bolt, find the load carried by each of the
bolts.

2. A steel strip 5 cm wide is fillet-welded to a steel plate over a length of 7.5 cm and across the
ends of the strip. The connection carries a tensile load of 100 kN. Find a suitable size of the
fillet weld if longitudinal welds can be stressed to 75 MN/m2 and the transverse welds to
100 MN/m2.
3. Two steel plates are connected together by 0.5 cm fillet welds. Estimate the maximum
shearing stress in the welds if the joint carries a bending moment of 2500 N-m.
