WEEK 3: CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING

Part 1: Multiple Choice Questions (2 points)

Choose the correct answer for each question.
1. Critical thinking helps individuals to:
A. Automatically agree with popular opinions
B. Analyze information to make logical decisions
C. Avoid considering others’ perspectives
D. Follow instructions without question
2. Which of the following is an example of problem-solving?
A. Ignoring a challenge in hopes it resolves itself
B. Taking systematic steps to address an issue
C. Asking someone else to make the decision
D. Avoiding any difficult situation
Part 2: Short Answer Questions (3 points)
Provide a brief answer to each question.
Explain one way critical thinking can help in identifying the root cause of a problem.
Critical thinking helps identify the root cause of a problem by encouraging you to look
beyond obvious symptoms and dig deeper. For example, instead of just noticing that a project is
delayed, critical thinking pushes you to ask why—such as examining team communication,
resource availability, or planning issues. By questioning and analyzing each factor, you can find
the true source of the delay and address it effectively.
Describe a situation where you would use problem-solving skills to address a work or study-
related issue.
During a large group project, we were racing to complete our tasks before the weekend
deadline. However, a crucial member of our team suddenly fell ill and was unable to participate.
This caused a significant delay in a large portion of the project. To address this situation, the
entire team gathered together to carefully analyze the causes and consequences of the problem.
We brainstormed various solutions, such as redistributing the workload, seeking assistance from
other team members, or requesting an extension. After careful consideration, the team decided to
redistribute the workload and seek additional help from another member. As a result, we were
able to overcome the difficulties and complete the project on schedule
Part 3: Essay Question (5 points)
Write a short essay (around 100 words) discussing how critical thinking and problem-
solving skills can be used to manage unexpected challenges in the workplace. Provide
examples of strategies that may help in overcoming such challenges.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential for managing unexpected
challenges in the workplace. When a problem arises, critical thinking enables employees to
assess the situation objectively, breaking it down to understand the root cause and possible
outcomes. For example, if a deadline suddenly shifts, a team can use problem-solving skills to
prioritize tasks, reallocate resources, or communicate openly with stakeholders to adjust
expectations. Strategies like brainstorming alternative solutions, analyzing risks, and seeking
input from diverse team members also help in finding creative ways forward. These skills allow
employees to adapt quickly, make informed decisions, and maintain productivity under pressure.
