Case Study
In August 2017, hurricane Maria hit Miami, Florida, and the Optima Air Filter Company. Many
employees’ homes were devastated. Optima found that it had to hire almost three completely new
crews, one for each shift. The problem was that the “old-timers” had known their jobs so well
that no one had ever bothered to draw up job descriptions for them. When about 30 new
employees began taking their places, there was general confusion about what they should do and
how they should do it
The flood quickly became old news to the firm’s out-of-state customers, who wanted filters, not
excuses. Phil Mann, the firm’s president, was at his wits’ end. He had about 30 new employees,
10 old-timers, and his original factory supervisor, Maybelline. He decided to meet with Linda
Lowe, a consultant from the local university’s business school. She immediately had the old-
timers fill out a job questionnaire that listed all their duties. Arguments ensued almost at once:
Both Phil and Maybelline thought the old-timers were exaggerating to make themselves look
more important, and the old-timers insisted that the lists faithfully reflected their duties.
Meanwhile, the customers clamored for their filters.
Questions
Question 1
Should Phil and Linda ignore the old-timers’ protests and write the job descriptions as they see
fit? Why? Why not? How would you go about resolving the differences?
Answer
Phil and Linda shouldn’t ignore the input from old timers as their insights are most valuable for
the company in its current state. If they ignore the old timer’s input they will feel undervalud and
might leave the company as well making the company more vulnerable.
Without knowledge of old timer’s the job description wont be so accurate. Their first hand
knowledge is also essential for creating a accurate job description.
We can make a job description with the help of newly hired employees and old timers. With input
from both parties we will get varying results. Then we can include a third party like human
resources to help us make an optimal and accurate JD.
We can test the new job description with pilot program with the help of small group of
employees.
Question 2
How would you have conducted the job analysis? What should Phil do now?

Answer
First conducting the interviews with both old timers and newly hired employees to gather
information about the tasks and responsibilities of their job
Secondly we can observer emplyees while performing their jobs to understand how the work is
atuallly being done.
Then we can create work logs for emplyees to understand the work flow.

All these things will help us identifying actual data needed for creating the job description.

Phil should focus on creating a accurate job description for future hiring.
Second he should start a training program for the new employees to increase efficiency of the
work.
Third he should create a performance management system to track the performance of
employees.
Lastly phil should focus on creating a work environment where all employees feel valued and
there in no discrimination among employees on the basis of their years or experience with the
company.
