INTRODUCTION

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that enables computers to perform tasks that
typically require human intelligence. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the potential
to significantly enhance the learning of speaking skills at the university level. This
enhancement is achieved through various applications that leverage natural language
processing, machine learning, and personalized learning experiences. The integration of AI
into language education addresses traditional challenges and provides innovative solutions
for improving students’ oral communication abilities1.

The following are the ways through which artificial intelligence technology can be used in
learning speaking skills at university level

Personalized Learning Experiences

One of the primary advantages of AI in language learning is its ability to create personalized
learning experiences. AI algorithms can analyze individual student performance,
preferences, and learning styles to tailor content and practice exercises specifically for each
learner. For instance, an AI-powered platform can assess a student’s pronunciation
accuracy and fluency during speaking exercises, then adjust future tasks to focus on areas
needing improvement2.

Real-Time Feedback and Assessment

AI technologies enable real-time feedback on speaking performance, which is crucial for

language learners. Through speech recognition and natural language processing, AI systems
can evaluate a student’s spoken responses instantly. They can provide constructive
feedback on pronunciation, intonation, grammar usage, and vocabulary choice 3.

Conversational Practice

Artificial intelligence (AI) -driven chatbots serve as valuable tools for practicing spoken
English in a low-pressure setting. These chatbots can engage students in conversation

simulations that mimic real-life interactions. By conversing with an AI chatbot, students can
practice their speaking skills without the anxiety often associated with speaking in front of
peers or instructors. The chatbots can be programmed to respond contextually based on
the student’s input, allowing for dynamic conversations that enhance fluency and
confidence4.

Speech Recognition Technology

Advanced speech recognition technology plays a critical role in helping students improve
their speaking skills. By utilizing this technology, educational platforms can analyze how
closely a student’s speech matches native pronunciation patterns. Students receive detailed
reports highlighting specific areas where they need improvement such as vowel sounds or
consonant clusters allowing them to focus their practice effectively.highlighting specific
areas where they need improvement such as vowel sounds or consonant clusters allowing

Note that not always an artificial intelligence technology can enhence better learning of
speaking skills hence also it have it's negative effects on the other hand.

The following are the negative effects of artificial intelligence technology (AI) in learning
speaking skills at university level;

Overreliance on Technology

Many students may become dependent on AI tools for feedback and practice, which limits
their ability to engage in real-life conversations without technological support. This can
hinder the development of spontaneous speaking and communication skills in general

Reduced Human Interaction and Impersonal Feedback

Partly many of Students they see no need to interact with each other looking for practice in
between because increasing the use of AI for speaking practice might decrease
opportunities for face-to-face interaction with peers and instructors. Human interaction is

crucial for developing nuanced conversational skills and understanding non-verbal cues. Not
only that but also AI systems might miss emotional nuances or the specific context of a
student’s speech, leading to less meaningful learning experiences.

Quality of Feedback

Normally, the use of artificial intelligence technology AI gives different answers depending
on the nature of the tools use normally not all AI tools are equally effective. If students rely
on subpar technology, they may receive inaccurate feedback or suggestions, which can lead
to confusion and misinformation about their speaking abilities.

CONCLUSIONS
AI provides a variety of applications to improve oral skills in learning and mastering a
second language, such as Speech recognition systems that provide instant feedback on
pronunciation and intonation; Adaptive learning platforms that customize content and
activities to individual student needs; Chatbots and virtual assistants that offer real-time
conversational practice; Linguistic analysis tools that identify common error patterns and
offer suggestions for improving accuracy and clarity in speaking.
