two case based questions of four marks each and Section E contains three questions of five
marks each.

variation of drift velocity vd of electrons in two copper wires A and B of different lengths versus the

potential difference V applied across their ends.

18. The figure shows a plot of three curves a, b, c, showing the variation of photocurrent vs. collector plate
potential for three different intensities I1, I2 and I3 having frequencies v1, v2 and v3 respectively incident on
a photosensitive surface. Point out the two curves for which the incident radiations have same frequency
but different intensities. Justify

19. The carbon-13 nucleus has one additional neutron as compared to nucleus of carbon-12. The
difference in the BE of these two nuclei is approximately 5 MeV. Take mass of neutron as 1.0086u.
Using this determine the difference in the atomic masses of these two nuclei.

20. The figure shows the variation of induced emf as a function of rate of change of
current for two identical solenoids X and Y. One is air cored and the other is iron
cored. Which one of them is iron cored? Why?
21. State Gauss’s law and show that the electric field outside a spherical shell is as if all the charges had
been concentrated at the centre.

22. a) The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor increases from 10 f to 80 f on introducing a
dielectric medium between the plates. Find the dielectric constant of the medium
b)A capacitor is charged to a potential V by connecting it to a battery. After sometime the battery is
disconnected and a dielectric is introduced between the plates. How will the potential difference between
the plates and the energy stored in it be affected? Justify your answer.

23. (a) A light of wavelength 500nm is used to illuminate a double slit experiment. For a double slit with
a separation of 0.44mm, determine how far the screen should be placed from the slits in order that a dark
fringe appears directly opposite to both the slits and only one bright fringe in between them.
(b) Identify the waves that are most suitable for studying arrangements of atoms in a crystal.
24. Using a phasor diagram, derive an expression for the impedance of a series LCR circuit. Hence
calculate the expression for the resonant frequency.

26. Define a wave front. Derive the laws of reflection of light on the basis of Huygens wave theory of
light.
27. Coil 1 has self-inductance L1 which is 3 times the self-inductance L2 of coil 2. If during a certain
instant, the rate of increase of current and the power dissipated in these two coils is the same, then
determine the ratio of
(a) their induced voltages
(b) currents
(c) Energy stored in the two coils at that instant.

SECTION – D
CASE STUDY
29. When a ray of light propagates from a denser medium to a rarer medium it bends away from the
normal. When the incident angle is increased refracted ray deviates more from the normal.
For a particular angle of incidence in the denser medium, the refracted ray just grazes interface
of the two surfaces. This angle of incidence is called the critical angle for the pair of media
involved.
i) For a ray incident at the critical angle, the angle of refraction is

30. A PN Junction Diode is one of the simplest semiconductor devices around, and which has the
electrical characteristic of passing current through itself in one direction only. However, unlike a resistor,
a diode does not behave linearly with respect to the applied voltage. Instead it has an exponential current-
voltage ( I-V ) relationship and therefore we cannot described its operation by simply using an equation
such as Ohm’s law.
There are two operating regions and three possible “biasing” conditions for the standard Junction
Diode and these are:
Zero Bias – No external voltage potential is applied to the PN junction diode.
Reverse Bias – The voltage potential is connected negative, (-ve) to the P-type material and positive, (+ve)
to the N-type material across the diode which has the effect of Increasing the PN junction diode’s width.
Forward Bias – The voltage potential is connected positive, (+ve) to the P-type material and negative, (-
ve) to the N-type material across the diode which has the effect of Decreasing the PN junction diodes
width.

31. .(a) Draw a ray diagram for the formation of image of an distant object by an astronomical telescope in
normal adjustment position. Deduce the expression for its magnifying power. Write one basic feature
which can distinguish between a telescope and a compound microscope.
(b)A concave mirror forms a real image of an object kept at a distance 9 cm from it. If the object is taken
away from the mirror by 6 cm, the image size reduces by ¼ th of its previous size. Find the focal length of
the mirror.

(a) Draw a ray diagram showing the formation of the image by a point object on the principal axis of a
spherical convex surface separating two media of refractive indices n1 and n2, when a point source is kept
in rarer medium of refractive index n1. Derive the relation between object and image distance in terms of
refractive index of the medium and radius of curvature of the surface.
(b) Find the position of the image formed by the lens combination shown in the diagram.

32. (a) Define Electric potential at a point and write its SI unit.

(b) Two capacitors are connected in series. Derive an expression of the equivalent capacitance of
the combination.

(c) Two point charges +q and -q are located at points (3a,0) and (0,4a) respectively in X-Y plane.
A third charge Q is kept at the origin. Find the value of Q, in terms of q and a, so that the
electrostatic potential energy of the system is zero.

(a) Define electric dipole moment. Is it a scalar or a vector? Derive the expression for the electric
field of a dipole at a point on the equatorial plane of the dipole.

(b) Draw the equipotential surfaces due to a dipole. Locate the points where the potential due to
the dipole is zero.
33.. a) Derive the expression for the magnetic field due to a current carrying coil of radius r at a
distance x from the centre along the x-axis.
a) A straight wire carrying a current of 5 A is bent into a semi circular arc of radius 2 cm as
shown in the figure. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field at the centre of the
arc.

OR
a) Draw a diagram to show the magnetic field lines produced by two parallel straight wires carrying
currents in the same direction. Obtain an expression for the force per unit length between these
wires and hence define SI unit of current.
b) Figure shows a circular loop connected to a battery .The arc ACB of length L1 carry the current I1
and arc ADB of length L2 carry the current I2 show that the net magnetic field at the centre of the
loop is zero.
