PROSE - UNIT 1 THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY

- Khushwant Singh

k
HUSHWANT SINGH (1915 - 2014) was an Indian novelist,

m
lawyer, journalist and politician. He studied law at St. Stephen’s
College, Delhi and the King’s College, London. He joined the
Indian Foreign Service in 1947. As a writer, he is best known for his keen

co
interest in secularism, sarcasm and love for poetry. He was awarded the
Padma Bhushan in 1974 and Padma Vibhushan in 2007 and the Sahitya
Akademi Fellowship in 2010. The Mark of Vishnu, A History of Sikhs, The
Train to Pakistan, Success Mantra, We Indians and Death at my Doorstep

s.
are some of his brilliant works. Between 1980 and 1986, he served as the Member of
Parliament in Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India.

ok
This story gives us the real picture of human relationship in a joint
family. It is written in the first person and is in auto-biographical mode.
It is a perception of Khushwant Singh of his grandmother. He describes
Introduction: how he spent his childhood with his grandmother in a village.
o
He also describes the change in social life when he moved to the city.
Ultimately, he describes the scene of her death. His description of his
ab
grandmother is deeply touching, with his usual poetic touch.

Key points
Khushwant Singh portrays his grandmother as an old woman.
He describes how he spent his childhood with his grandmother in a village.
ur

The thought of his grandmother being young and charming was almost revolting.
He felt that she looked the same even after twenty years.
His parents left him to live with her, when they shifted to the city.
.s

His grandmother looked after him with care and affection.

Then, they also moved to the city and their link of friendship was cut off.
All day long, his grandmother sat spinning the wheel and reciting her prayers.
w

Every afternoon, she used to feed the sparrows.

Khushwant Singh went abroad for studies and came back after five years.
His grandmother fell ill. She laid peacefully in bed, saying her beads in the rosary.
w

She died. All the sparrows mourned her death in utter silence, without peeking at the bread crumbs thrown to
them, by the author’s mother.

 (QY-'18 & Aug.-'22; Mar-'23)

aspects like thoughtfulness, kind-heartedness, discipline, patience, the ability to listen, developing social skills,
communication skills, companionship, gaining wisdom beyond one’s age, time management, etc. to the younger

Many elders today would say that times have changed, or the situations or struggles are not quite the same.
However, continuing to do things in their way, those same people will often tell us that they wished they had
listened when others were trying to advise them. It would have saved them a lot of hardship and pain. Training
a boy, taking the advice of others who have experienced certain things into account, multiple options, and a
plan may all help prepare for things to come. Learning from the mistakes of others so that one does not make
the same mistake is very wise.

m
In this story, though the grandmother had no proper schooling and no formal education, she lived a life
of dedication and integrity. She never compromised with her principles and was a determined woman. She had
shown her love for even animals and birds in feeding the street dogs and sparrows. These qualities certainly

co
influenced the author.
b. As young Khushwant Singh, write a letter to your parents describing your daily routine expressing your
thoughts and feelings about staying in the village.

s.
Dear Mom and Dad,
Hope this letter finds you in the best of health.
Here grandma and I are good friends. Every morning she wakes me up and gets me ready for school. While

ok
she baths and dresses me, she sings a prayer song. She hopes that I will listen to it and get to learn it by-heart.
She washes my wooden slate and plasters it with yellow chalk. Then she ties my earthen ink-pot and a red pen

me to the school. She would also carry several chapattis with her for the village dogs. My school is attached to
a temple. The priest teaches us the alphabet and the morning-prayer. We, the children, would sit in rows on

either side of verandah singing the alphabet or the prayer in chorus. Grandma would sit inside reading the
scriptures. When we both are finished, we would walk back home together. The village dogs follow us from the

It has become a daily habit. I love being with her. Hope to see you soon.

c. Animals are capable of empathy. Substantiate this statement with examples from the story as well as your
own experiences.
.s

For decades, scientists who are trying to study animal empathy have run into a simple fundamental problem.
A recent research report tells that scientists are now finding evidence of empathy in non-human animals, mainly
in other primates such as chimpanzees, orangutans, dogs, mice, and recently in chicken. Empathetic behaviour
w

has also been reported in elephants. Nobody can deny that certain animals recognize relationships and attach
well with human beings.
The relationship between the author’s grandmother and the village dogs as well as the sparrows is a proof
w

for statement. She was very kind-hearted. When she was in the village, she used to carry stale chapattis with
her while taking her grandson to school. On returning, she would feed the dogs, which were following her from
the temple to her home. When she came to the city, she took to feeding the sparrows. She used to throw little
crumbs of bread to them. They would sit on her legs, shoulders and head. When she died, all the sparrows came
w

silently to mourn her death.

Even, in my house, while feeding the doves, I find that they behave in a more compassionate manner, with
discipline and affection. It is really surprising to note. So, we can conclude that certain animals and birds are
capable of empathy.

w

A Happy Family
There is a quote from Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, “All happy families resemble one another, every unhappy family is unhappy in its own
fashion.” Every member of a family wishes to contribute to form a happy family, irrespective of nuclear family or joint family. What makes
w

a family happy? How can each member contribute to form happiness? Everybody will tell that high salaried job or profitable business is the
basic need for happiness. So, money, big house, costly dresses, tasty dishes are the criteria for happiness. There is no doubt that these things
will make a family happy. But there are some more aspects other than these. What are they? Love, honesty and care for each member of the
family. The children will learn honesty from observing the activities of their parents. Spending weekends with all the family members will bring
happiness. Everybody should interact with each other over a group of activities. Happiness is the result of spending time together meaningfully.
Pleasant memories will stay with everybody forever.

Drafting a Speech :
Reading Maketh a Complete Man
Good morning everyone! Respected Principal, reverend teachers and beloved friends; I am Megalai of Class
XI and I am here today to talk about the importance of reading.
w

We as students have always misunderstood that reading is only confined to our textbooks, but in reality, reading
goes beyond our school books. Reading brings, wide knowledge and experiences of many people from different parts
of the world. It makes us wonder and to see the world from another person’s perspective. It expands our imaginative
w

horizon and explores new boundaries.

It is really true that reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. It makes the brain think, enriches the
imagination and at the same time it provides pleasure and helps people to relax. Neither TV nor the Internet can
replace good books. That’s why those who want to be smart and intelligent should spend time on reading at least 30
w

minutes everyday.
Books contain grains of wisdom. They give us sound moral advice and teach us what is right and what is wrong.
English philosopher Bacon said that “Reading makes a full man”. The truth of this statement can hardly be questioned.
I thank you all for giving me this opportunity to speak about the importance of Reading. Let us all take an
oath to read throughout our life and enrich our mind, body and soul.

Poem Outline
In this poem, the poet conveys an important message that each and every person needs to feel proud and honoured
o
of themselves for the good qualities they have in them.
The poet mentions that every person is a king who does not have to bend or kneel before anyone. Everyone should
ab
feel proud of themselves to have been born with nobility and pride. He refers to Mount Everest which is the highest peak
in the world, to bring out a comparison between Mt. Everest and other small hills. He also relates that comparison to
every human being to convey that everyone is born to aim high in life and live with dignity and honour. You need not be
like Mt. Everest to follow a path of truth and nobility, you can also be like a small hill which has its peak, by realizing the
good qualities you are born with.

arises from the way, we live and our path. Mount Everest is not the only peak, which is the highest of all. Every
small hill has the highest point to boast. We don’t care about the height we reach. He, who does not bend his
head or body to gain monetary benefits is a king, we adore. We should respect these persons.
2. The poem does not focus on the destination but the journey towards it. Discuss.  (HY.18; June-'19; Sep.20;
The poem mentions the good qualities which every individual is born with, like, June-'23)

Devotion - towards what we try to achieve
Bravery - to avoid defeat and move again
Courage - no fear to anyone
Truth - not praising anyone to flatter them

co
Aim - to bless and praise the deserving ones
Commitment - to do what we have promised

The poem also portrays that a person is considered as a king when he lives a way of life that is uncorrupt
and truthful. The path we follow throughout of life should be filled with Honour and Dignity. We should take
pride in the way we live. As we are born with these qualities, we should make sure we do not lose these good

qualities throughout our journey of life.

ab
1. Write a short summary of the poem “Everest is not the only peak”. (May-'22 & HY-'23)
This poem is an account of the poet’s view on the qualities of life. We should feel proud and high
of ourselves though our good qualities may be few and small in quantity. It is our nature that whatever
we try, we do it with deep and true devotion. We avoid defeat, by moving back from it. Our courage is
ur

like a strong fort. We have not bent our head or body in fear of anyone. We don’t flatter anyone to gain
benefits. We are always proud of us and feel high about us. Never shall we fail to do what we have promised.
Though we are proud of the positions we hold, we are as humble as ever. Our pride arises from the way we live and
our path is a path of nobility and honour. We lead a pure life without kneeling and bending for anyone in order
.s

to gain benefits. We don’t care for the height, we reach. He, who doesn’t bend his head or body to gain monetary
benefits, is a king, we adore. As everyone follows the path of nobility and pride, here no one is poor. So we should
always be proud and feel high about ourselves that we have not cheated nor been selfish.

Speaking Activity
E. Discuss the following topics in groups of five and choose a representative to sum up the views and share them
with the class.
a) To succeed in life, one must have a single- minded devotion to duty.

m
Student 1 : Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam quoted ‘To succeed in your mission, one must have a single-minded
devotion to duty’.
Student 2 : To be successful in your life, you must have a clear vision of your goal. You must have a single

co
minded enthusiasm to your goal. My aunt was devoted to her duty and she achieved success in
a short time.
Student 3 : Dream big and start working for it. Chase the goals and it doesn’t matter how much slower you
go, as long as you are not going to stop.
Student 4 : Yes. My science teacher worked hard towards achieving her goal successfully.

s.
Student 5 : Success belongs to those, who fix the goals and keep working for it. We can’t be successful by just
dreaming about success.
Rep : Dear friends. The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand and the determination

ok
that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. Therefore
to succeed in your mission , you must have a vision.
b) ‘Success is not final, failure is not fatal’. It is the courage and perseverance that counts.
Student 1 : Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the will to continue that counts. So is the famous
o
saying of Sir Winston Churchill.
Student 2 : This well-known quote indicates that in one’s life, he/she will surely experience shortcomings,
but if they decide to use it as a form of encouragement, they will succeed. My mother is a good
ab
example of this. She had a strong will.
Student 3 : When you fail, you know your weaknesses and how to overcome them. The knowledge gained from
experience is far better than that gained from sources. Hence is the famous proverb, “experience
is the best teacher”.
ur

Student 4 : Yes, its true. There are many people who have used their failures to drive them on and have
become successful in life.
Student 5 : Steve Jobs, a college dropout made iconic products like ipod, ipad and the iphone and became
successful. Michael Jordon, a dropout in school, was the best basketball player.
.s

Rep : We had discussed effectively and proved that success is not final and failure is not fatal. So our
greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising up every time we fall.
c) Successful people neither brood over the past nor worry about the future.
w

Student 1 : Many of us dwell on mistakes we made or have regrets about how we handled things in the past.
Student 2 : We also get worried about our future. The truth is we can’t change the past, no matter how hard
we try.
w

Student 3 : It will not do any good to have regrets or worry about how dumb we were a couple of years ago,
when we missed that opportunity.
Student 4 : We can learn from the past and rectify ourselves. We should also not worry about our future and
assume the worst to happen.
w

Student 5 : Successful people neither brood over the past, nor worry about their future. Their only goal would
be to succeed in their life.
Rep : So successful people work on their goal not worrying about their past mistakes or future plans.
They consider relaxing and living in the present is one of the most important things in their life,
as it frees of their time, makes them happier and more successful along their way.

POETRY - UNIT 6 THE HOLLOW CROWN

- William Shakespeare

ABOUT THE POET

m
William Shakespeare (26 April 1564 - 23 April 1616) occupies a position
unique in world literature. He was an English poet, actor and playwright. He was

co
nicknamed as the “Bard of Avon” and was often called ‘England’s national poet.’
He wrote plays that captured the complete range of human emotions and conflicts.
He wrote about 37 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems and a few other
verses. They have been translated into almost all the languages of the world.

s.
His plays are classified into three sections - Comedy, Tragedy and Historical. “He
was not of an age, but for all time - Ben Jonson”.

This poem is an extract from William Shakespeare’s Historic play ‘King Richard, the

ok
second’. The play is based on the true events that occurred towards the end of the 14th
century. Richard II was crowned as the King of England in 1377, when he was 10 years
old. In 1399, he was deposed by his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, who crowned himself
About the Poem : as ‘King Henry-the Fourth’. Richard II was ousted from his royal position and sent to
o
prison, where he died in captivity. In his play, Shakespeare captures this prominent
episode of English history entirely a free-flowing verse so lyrically that he proves once
again his stature as an uncrowned king of English literature.
ab

Key points
This poem is a monologue of King Richard-II. He ponders the over might of Death that overshadows everything
else.
ur

Richard-II speaks these lines, when he comes face to face with the bleak reality of his crumbling world.
He talks about graves, worms and about the inscriptions on tombstones in memory of the dead.
He wants his men to choose their executors and talk of their wills. They cannot pass anything to their next
.s

generation than their rotting bodies to the ground.

He requests his men to tell the sad stories of the death of kings. There is always death around kings and there is no
way to escape it.
w

Death laughs at the king’s reign and mocks his great ceremonies. It fills him with vain pride.
The king also adds that he too needs bread to live, feels a want, tastes grief and needs friends.
w

He concludes his speech rhetorically, questioning them how could they call him a king, while he was compelled to
acknowledge human mortality.

Summary
w

This monologue is famously known as the “Hollow Crown” speech in theatrical circles. In it, King Richard-II ponders
over the might of Death that overshadows everything else, including the seemingly invulnerable power of kings, and
renders them as human as any commoner at a moments notice. When Richard-II comes face to face with the bleak reality
of his crumbling world and his imminent fate, he succumbs to despair, momentarily. It is then, that he speaks the following
verse.

Govt. Model Paper - 2019

Write a Summary or Make notes of the following passage :
There are basically two types of auctions: ascending-bid auctions and descending-bid auctions. Ascending-bid
auctions start out with a low bid for an object. The price of the object is gradually raised until only one bidder remains.
By contrast, descending-bid auctions start out with a high bid and the price is progressively lowered until a customer

m
expresses a willingness to purchase the object. Both procedures have a number of variants. For example, in some types
of auctions a professional auctioneer declares the suggested bids. In other types of auctions, however, the customers
make their own bids. Another variant, used at places such as eBay or Yahoo Auction, is called a “buyout option”. A high
price for an item is declared. Anyone willing to pay that price is guaranteed a purchase. This variant seems to appeal

co
consumers who dislike uncertainty: for a fixed price they are guaranteed an object. “Buyout options” are most commonly
used if the seller has a stock of several copies of the same item.
Both ascending-bid and descending-bid auctions can be conducted in either open or closed formats. In open
formats, all participants know what exactly how much an object is going for. For example, at many Japanese fish markets,
wholesalers gather around the fish to be purchased and raise their hands as the auctioneer names progressively higher

s.
prices. In closed auctions, participants are unaware of how much other participants are willing to pay for an object.
For example, a case in which participants used sealed envelopes to place their bids on a piece of real estate represents
this type of auction. Though open auctions generally yield higher prices, closed formats are sometimes preferred in

ok
situations in which the privacy of the prospective buyers is considered paramount or the need to document precisely
how much each party bid is high.

Water is the essential source of life on earth as we need it in every activity like drinking, cooking,
bathing, washing, agriculture etc. Water conservation is the practice of using water efficiently to reduce
unnecessary water usage. We should save water and should not contaminate it. Water should be available
for future generations also. Water management should be properly planned. We should take the necessary
steps to keep the water bodies clean. Trees play an important role in water conservation. So we should plant
more trees. Rainwater harvesting has to be done in every building. We can reduce the usage of water in our

Road Safety is the measure for people while using the road. Every year, millions of people across the

The Common set of rules made up for pedestrians, cyclists, bike-riders, four-wheelers, etc. Pedestrians have
to follow the special rules established for the paved surface of the road. Motorists, four-wheeler users and
other vehicle users have to follow road signal rule. Speed can be dangerous for life; the statement implies

3. Write an article in about 150 words on the topic ‘Social Distancing’. (Aug-'22)

ok
Ans S ocial distancing is one of the most effective measures to reduce the spread of the virus, which is transmitted
by air droplets. The droplets produced by coughing, sneezing or forced speaking have a certain transmission
distance. By keeping this distance, we can reduce the spread of the virus. Social distancing aims to decrease
or interrupt transmission of COVID-19 in a population by minimising contact between potentially infected
o
individuals and healthy individuals, or between population groups with high rates of transmission and
population groups with no or low levels of transmission. The objective is to reduce transmission, delaying
ab

pressure on the healthcare system.

Parents can help their children in guiding them, rather than controlling them. They should ensure a
positive environment at home, besides helping the child to balance the activities in the day providing healthy
food and snacks during the day, making sure that the child is able to relax during the day and ensuring
proper sleep at night for her / him. Parents need to understand that they also have to sacrifice on outings or

which create anxieties or fear. If there is a necessity, even the parents should be counselled.

GEQ Government Exam Question

1. Explain the meaning of the proverb : All that glitters is not gold. (HY-'18)

ok
Ans all that glitters is not gold
The meaning of the proverb is ‘not everything that is shiny and attractive is valuable’. The English poet
and playwright William Shakespeare wrote this line in his famous play ‘The Merchant of Venice’, in 1596.
o
He expressed the idea that shiny things were not necessarily precious things. His line was actually ‘all that
glisters is not gold’ and the word ‘glister’ is replaced by ‘glitter’ in modern times.
ab
This proverb indicates that we should never go by the appearance of anything, whether it a person or a
thing. Most of the time, the outside appearance conceals all the reality and truth. Nowadays, we see so many
imitation jewellery that shines even more than gold. Therefore, we should find the true colour of a person
only by moving with him, though not closely at least getting acquainted with him. The characters of people
ur

in today’s world are self-centered and such people just look at the benefits they get out of it. In order to
market a sub-standard product, the manufacturer will advertise very attractively, but in real sense, it will be
found worthless. We have to be very careful with such type of advertisements. Any individual can be judged
.s

by his deeds and attitude and not by his outer appearance. Hence, we should be aware of the appearance and
judge everything wisely.
w

2. W
rite a paragraph of about 150 words, expanding the proverb ‘Hardwork Never Fails’. (CRT-'22)
Ans ‘HARD WORK NEVER FAILS’
w

Hard work is the essence of the whole universe. There are many routes to a place, but success has only
one route, i.e. Hard work which is also the shortcut. Hard work has no substitute. It gives pleasure, satisfaction
and experience to anybody. If you put more efforts and spend more hours to study, you get more marks.
w

Many years of hard work and sacrifice led to many useful inventions. Several days of voyage made discovery
of many sea routes. Many students work while they study. They balance both, with their hard work. One
fine example for this is Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. His continuous hard work moulded him as a Scientist and
later as the President of India.
Moral : Hard work never fails but never fail to work hard.

Exercises

1. Explain the meaning of the proverb : The child is father of the man.
Ans The child is father of the man

m
The proverb “The child is father of the man” appears in the poem ‘My Heart Leaps When I Behold’

written by the famous poet William Wordsworth. The proverb explains that the qualities and characteristics
shown by a child often indicate what the child is going to be as a grown-up man. The childhood is the
reflection of future personality. The habits, traits, qualities of a man are usually the development of the habits,

co
traits, qualities he had as a child. A careful study of the characteristics and qualities of a child can help us to
foretell his future prospects. The child is father of the man is proved true in many cases. The characteristics
and qualities during childhood are developed in the grown-up personality of a man.

s.
2. Explain the meaning of the proverb : Money is a good servant, but a bad master.

Ans Money is a good servant, but a bad master

ok
Money is essential in this world. It is the ‘money’ through which we can purchase all the necessary
comforts of life. It is the money which gives a man, confidence, credentials, capacity, and courage. Money
is regarded as ‘divine’ by a few people, particularly by the poor. The rich, who own lots of money, still crave
for earning more and more, without caring even for their own health or their family. They become servants
o
of money, earning money not for the sake of themselves but for the sake of money and a time comes they
find themselves unable to use the money for their happiness. We cannot purchase inner satisfaction with
ab
money, we cannot purchase the lost youthfulness with money, and we cannot purchase time. Excessive love
for money makes a man a slave of money. Money is important for our life, but it is not the most important
thing for a human being. Those who use the money for fulfilling their necessities, acquiring reasonable
comforts and for the welfare of a common good are the masters of money. However those who earn money
ur

just for the sake of increasing its volume are slaves of the money. Money has become their master and they
are just slaves. So, it is said that “Money is a good servant but a bad master.”

Ans Mohandas K. Gandhi

co
Mohandas K. Gandhi was born in 1869, in Porbandar, India. Mohandas was from the social caste of
tradesmen. His mother was illiterate, but her common sense and religious devotion had a lasting impact
on Gandhi’s character. As a youngster, Mohandas was a good student, but the shy young boy displayed

s.
no signs of leadership. On the death of his father, Mohandas travelled to England to gain a degree in law.
He became involved with the Vegetarian Society and was once asked to translate the Hindu Bhagavad Gita.
This classic of Hindu literature awakened in Gandhi a sense of pride in the Indian scriptures, of which the

ok
Gita was the pearl.
Around this time, he also studied the Bible and was struck by the teachings of Jesus Christ – especially
the emphasis on humility and forgiveness. He remained committed to the Bible and Bhagavad Gita
throughout his life, though he was critical of aspects of both religions.

o
After 21 years in South Africa, Gandhi returned to India in 1915. He became the leader of the Indian
nationalist movement campaigning for home rule or Swaraj.
ab
Gandhi successfully instigated a series of non-violent protest. This included national strikes for one
or two days. The British sought to ban opposition, but the nature of non-violent protest and strikes made
it difficult to counter.
ur

At the age of 78, Gandhi undertook another fast to try and prevent the sectarian killing. After 5 days,
the leaders agreed to stop killing. But ten days later Gandhi was shot dead by a Hindu Brahmin who opposed
to Gandhi’s support for Muslims and the untouchables.
