1. Measures of Central Tendency
o Measures of central tendency are single numbers that provide
summary information about an entire set of data, without listing every
single data value. These single values represent the middle or center
values of the data and are helpful in comparing different sets of data.

 Three main measures of central tendency:

o Mean
- the sum of a set of values, divided by the number of values in the
set.
o Median
- the middle value, when the data set has been arranged from the
lowest to the highest value.
o Mode
- value that is repeated most often in a data set. If there is
no one value that is repeated most often, then a data set has no
mode or is multi-modal (as more than one mode).

 How to get the mean, median, and mode?

o To find the mean, add all the numbers together and divide the sum
by the total number of values.
o To find the median, arrange the numbers in order and choose the
middle value, or find the average of the two middle values if there’s
an even number of data points.
o To find the mode, identify the number that appears most frequently in
the data set.

2. Classification of Data
o Ungrouped Data
- defined as the data given as individual points (i.e. values or
numbers) such as 15, 63, 34, 20, 25, and so on.
- Generally known as the “RAW DATA”.
o Grouped Data
- Grouped data means the data (or information) given in the form
of class intervals such as 0-20, 20-40 and so on.
- Generally known as “ORANIZED or SORTED DATA”.
B. Establishing 1. Lesson Purpose
Lesson Purpose Warm-Up Activity. “FOUR PICS ONE WORD”

The students will play a game titled 'Four Pics One Word'
Mechanics:
o The learners will be divided into groups based on their seating
arrangement.
o The teacher will flash four images on the screen.
o The learners will analyze the flashed four images and within 20
seconds they must connect a common connection among them.
o After identifying the connection, the learners will unscramble a set of
given letters to form a word related to today's topic.
o Finally, once all groups have formed their words, they will decode
and arrange the unscrambled words to form a complete and
meaningful sentence.

Decoded Sentence:

Guide Question:
How did you find our activity? Was it easy or challenging to decode the
words?
o The words we decoded are all related to measures of position,
specifically quartiles. These terms will help us understand how data
is divided into parts to analyze its distribution.

2. Unlocking Content Area Vocabulary

1. Measures of Position give us a way to see where a certain data point or
value falls in a sample or distribution. A measure can tell us whether a
value is about the average, or whether it’s unusually high or low.
2. Quartiles divide a data set into four equal parts, helping to analyze data
distribution. The first, second, and third represent 25%, 50%, and 75% of
the data, respectively.
3. Deciles split a data set into ten equal parts, providing a more detailed
measure of distribution. Each decile represents 10% increments.
4. Percentiles divide data into 100 equal parts, showing how a specific
value ranks relative to the whole. For example, the 90th percentile
means a value is higher than 90% of the data.
5. Ungrouped Data consists of raw, individual values that are not sorted
into categories. When analyzing quartiles, deciles, and percentiles,
calculations are done directly using each data point.
6. Grouped Data is organized into frequency tables or classes, making it
easier to analyze large sets of numbers.
7. Ascending Order is aarranging data from the smallest to the largest
value.
8. Descending Order is arranging data from the largest to the smallest
value.
9. Interpretation involves making sense of statistical results, such as
understanding what quartiles, deciles, or percentiles reveal about data
distribution. This step is crucial for drawing meaningful conclusions in
research and analysis.
10. Position refers to the placement of a value within a data set based on
measures like quartiles, deciles, and percentiles.

C. Developing and SUB-TOPIC 1

Deepening Measures of Position for Ungrouped Data: QUARTILES
Understanding
Quartiles
The quartiles are the score points which divide a distribution into four equal parts.

25% 50% 75%

a. 25% of the data has a value ≤ Q 1

b. 50% of the data has a value ≤ x∨Q 2
c. 75% of the data has a value ≤ Q 3

Worked Example:

The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of customers who came into
his café each hour in a day. The results were 14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10, and
11. Find the lower quartile, and the upper quartile of the data.

Procedure:
Step 1: Arrange the data in ascending order
The data in ascending order are: 5, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14, 17
Step 2: Determine the least, middle, and greatest value
Determining the least, middle, and greatest values helps in understanding data
distribution and calculating measures of position
Least: 5
Middle: 10
Greatest: 17
Step 3: Determine the lower quartile and upper quartile manually using the
presented ungrouped data
The lower quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the least value
in the data set.
least middle

5, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14,17

The upper quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the greatest
value in the data set.
middle greatest
5, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14,17

Q3
Determining the lower and upper quartiles is important for understanding the
spread and distribution of data. The lower quartile helps identify the 25% of data
below the median, while the upper quartile shows 75% of the data.

Step 4: Interpret the data

Q3

Therefore, the lower quartile is 9 and the upper quartile is 14, this means that
25% of the expected customers were less than or equal to 9, 50% of the customers
are equal to 10, while 75% of the customers were less than or equal to 14.

Remember:
This method of solving the Q 1, Q 2 and Q 3 is only effective when the data set
contains an odd number of values.

Lesson Activity:
A company sells various electronic items, including hard disks, monitors,
keyboards, mice, and speakers. The quantities sold in one month were as follows:
290 hard disks, 370 monitors, 260 keyboards, 180 mice, and 430 speakers. To
assess the distribution of sales across different products, find the average for the
lower quartile and the upper quartile of the data.

Solution:
Step 1: Arrange the data in ascending order

The data in ascending order are: 180, 260, 290, 370, 430

Step 2: Determine the least, middle, and greatest value

Least: 180
Middle: 290
Greatest: 430

Step 3: Determine the lower quartile and upper quartile

The lower quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the least value
in the data set.
least middle

180, 260, 290, 370, 430

The upper quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the greatest
value in the data set.
middle greatest

180, 260, 290, 370, 430

Q3
Step 4: Compute the average.
Q1 Q3

Given: Solution:
Q1=260
Q3=370 260+370
Average =
2
Working Equation: 630
Q1+Q 3 Average =
Average = 2
2
Average = 315
Step 5: Interpret the data

Therefore, based on the sales data for various electronic items, the lower
quartile is 260, meaning that 25% of the products sold were less than or equal to
this quantity. The median which is 50% is equal to 290, while the 75% of the sales
were less than or equal to 370. The computed average of the lower quartile and
upper quartile is 315, showing that most products sold fall between 260 and 370.

Remember:
This method of solving the Q 1, Q 2 and Q 3 is only effective when the data set
contains an even number of values.

data. The first among these methods is the Mendenhall and Sincich Method.

The Mendenhall and Sincich Method is a statistical technique used to estimate

percentiles, quartiles, and other measures of position for grouped data by applying a
formula that approximates their values.

In this method, the upper quartile and lower quartile are always two of the data
elements.

Example Problem:
Find the first quartile ( Q 1 )and the third quartile ( Q3 ), given the scores of 10
students in their Mathematics activity using 7, 30, 1, 21, 27, 7, 3, 16, 31.

a. Locate the First Quartile

Working Equation: For Lower Quartiles (Q 1)

1
Position of Q 1 = ( n+1 )
4
Where:
n is the total scores in the given data set
Q1 is the first quartile in the given data set

Remember:
Round to the nearest integer; If L falls halfway between two integers, round up.

Procedure:
Step 1: Arrange in ascending order

1, 3, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31

Step 2: To find Q 1, locate its position using the formula and if L falls halfway
between two integers, round off to the nearest integer.

1, 3, 7, 7, 16, 21, 27, 30, 31

Given:
n=9

Working Equation:
1
Position of Q 1 = ( n+1 )
4
Solution:
1
Position of Q 1 = ( 9+1 )
4
1
Position of Q 1 = ( 10 )
4
Position of Q 1 = 2.5 3

Since the computed lower quartile is 2.5, this means that the first quartile is
located on the 3rd position of the data set, therefore, the value of the first quartile is
7.

b. Locate the Third Quartiles

Working Equation: For Upper Quartiles (Q 3)

3
Position of Q 3 = ( n+1 )
4

Where:
n is the total scores in the given data set
Q3 is the third quartile in the given data set
Remember:
Round to the nearest integer; If U falls halfway between two integers, round down.

Working Equation:
3
Position of Q 3 = ( n+1 )
4
Solution:
3
Position of Q 3 = ( 9+1 )
34
Position of Q 3 = ( 10 )
4
Position of Q 3 = 7.5 7

Since the computed upper quartile is 7.5. This means that the third quartile is
located on the 7th position of the data set, therefore the value of the third quartile is
27.
