FUNDAMENTALS OF NETWORKING
A computer network is a group of two or more interconnected computer
systems. You can establish a network connection using either cable or wireless
media.

ADVANTAGES OF A COMPUTER NETWORK

• Helps you to connect with multiple computers together to send and receive
information when accessing the network.
• Helps you to share printers, scanners, and email.
• Helps you to share information at very fast speed
• Electronic communication is more efficient and less expensive than
without the network.

COMPUTER NETWORK COMPONENTS

https://www.guru99.com/images/1/090719_0446_BasicsofCom1.png
Here are essential computer network components:
Servers
• Servers are computers that hold shared programs, files, and the
network operating system. Servers allow access to network resources
to all the users of the network.
Clients
• Clients are computer devices which access and uses the network as
well as shares network resources. They are also users of the network,
as they can send and receive requests from the server.
Transmission Media
• Transmission media is a carrier used to interconnect computers in a
network, such as coaxial cable, twisted-pair wire, and optical fiber
cable. It is also known as links, channels, or lines.
Shared Data
• Shared data are data which is shared between the clients such as data
files, printer access programs, and email.
Network Interface Card
• Network Interface card sends, receives data, and controls data flow
between the computer and the network.
Local Operating System
• A local OS which helps personal computers to access files, print to a
local printer and uses one or more disk and CD drives which are
located on the computer.
Network Operating System
• The network operating system is a program which runs on computers
and servers. It allows the computers to communicate via network.
Protocol
• A protocol is the set of defined rules that allows two entities to
communicate across the network. Some standard protocols used for
this purpose are IP, TCP, UDP, FTP, etc.
OSI
• OSI stands for Open Systems Interconnection. It is a reference model
which allows you to specify standards for communications.

UNIQUE IDENTIFIERS OF NETWORK

Hostname: Every device of the network is associated with a unique device,
which is called hostname.
IP Address: IP (Internet Protocol) address is as a unique identifier for each
device on the Internet. Length of the IP address is 32-bits. IPv6 address is 64 bits.
DNS Server: DNS stands for Domain Name System. It is a server which
translates URL or web addresses into their corresponding IP addresses.
MAC Address: MAC (Media Access Control Address) is known as a physical
address is a unique identifier of each host and is associated with the NIC (Network
Interface Card). General length of MAC address is : 12-digit/ 6 bytes/ 48 bits.
Port: Port is a logical channel which allows network users to send or receive
data to an application. Every host can have multiple applications running. Each of
these applications are identified using the port number on which they are running.

OTHER IMPORTANT NETWORK COMPONENTS

ARP: ARP stands for Address Resolution Protocolwhich helps network users
to convert the IP address into its corresponding Physical Address.
RARP: Reverse Address Resolution Protocol gives an IP address of the device
with given a physical address as input.

USES OF COMPUTER NETWORKS

1. Helps you to share resource such as printers
2. Allows you to share expensive software's and database among network
participants
3. Provides fast and effective communication from one computer to another
computer
4. Helps you to exchange data and information among users via a network.

DISADVANTAGES OF USING COMPUTER NETWORKS

1. Investment for hardware and software can be costly for initial set-up
2. If you don't take proper security precautions like file encryption, firewalls then
your data will be at risk.
3. Some components of the network design may not last for many years, and it will
become useless or malfunction and need to be replaced.
4. Requires time for constant administration
5. Frequent server failure and issues of regular cable faults

LOCAL AREA NETWORK

A Local area network (LAN), or, in other words, small network constrained to
a small geographic area. An example of a LAN would be a computer network within
a building.

https://digitalworld839.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/LAN-Local-Area-Network-1.jpg
WIDE AREA NETWORK
A wide area network (WAN) is a computer network that covers a broad area
(i.e., any network whose communications links cross metropolitan, regional, or
national boundaries).
The largest WAN in existence is the Internet.

CLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Wide%2BArea%2BNetwork.png

METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK

A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a hybrid between a LAN and a WAN.
Like a WAN, it connects two or more LANs in the same geographic area.

THE INTERNET
It is a network of networks that consists of millions of interconnected devices,
that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking
technologies.
VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK
A VPN is a private network that is constructed within a public network
infrastructure such as the global Internet. A telecommuter can access the network
of the company headquarters through the Internet by building a secure tunnel
between the telecommuter’s PC and a VPN router in the headquarters. It is a
mechanism for providing secure, reliable transport over Internet. VPNs are frequently
used by remote workers or companies with remote offices to share private data and
network resources.

SERVER-BASED NETWORK
The term Client/server refers to the concept of sharing the work involved in
processing data between the client computer and the server computer.
The client/server network is the most efficient way to provide:

• Databases and management of applications such as Spreadsheets,

Accounting, Communications and Document management.
• Network management.
• Centralized file storage

PEER TO PEER NETWORK

There are no dedicated servers or hierarchy among the computers. All of the
computers are equal and therefore known as peers. In peer-to-peer (P2P) networks,
each computer acts as both a server and a client. Examples of P2P software include
Skype and BitTorrent.

NETWORK MEDIA
Network media is the actual path over which an electrical signal travels as it
moves from one component to another.

TWISTED PAIR

Twisted-pair cable is a type of cabling that is used for telephone

communications and most modern Ethernet networks.

UNSHIELDED TWISTED PAIR (UTP)

UTP cable is a medium that is composed of pairs of wires UTP cable is used
in a variety of networks. Each of the eight individual copper wires in UTP cable is
covered by an insulating material.

SHIELDED TWISTED PAIR

It is a cable combines the techniques of
shielding, cancellation, and wire twisting. Each
pair of wires is wrapped in a metallic foil. The four
pairs of wires then are wrapped in an overall
metallic braid or foil.

http://webpage.pace.edu/ms16182p/networking/utp%20and%20stp.jpg
COAXIAL CABLE
It is a cable used in the
transmission of video,
communications, and audio.
However, these cables are also used in
networks and what allow a broadband
cable Internet connection using a
cable modem.

FIBER OPTIC CABLE

This cable contains optical fibers (usually glass) coated in plastic that are
used to send data by pulses of light.

https://cdn.instrumentationtools.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/fiber-optic-principle.png

TYPES OF FIBER-OPTIC CABLE

1. Single-mode fiber cable allows only one mode (or wavelength) of light to propagate
through the fiber. It is capable of higher bandwidth and greater distances than
multimode, and it is often used for campus backbones.
2. Multimode fiber cable allows multiple modes of light to propagate through the
fiber. It is often used for workgroup applications and intrabuilding applications such
as risers. It uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a light-generating device. The
maximum cable length is 2 km (6561.7 feet).

https://www.tccomm.com/Content/images/Literature/education-Singlemode-vs-multimode-lg.jpg
WIRELESS COMMUNICATION
Wireless communication uses radio frequencies (RF) or infrared (IR) waves
to transmit data between devices on a LAN. For wireless LANs, a key component is
the wireless hub, or access point, used for signal distribution.

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/7d/23/cc/7d23cc0153aaa21b337078ae7b1fc974.png
NETWORKING DEVICES AND TESTING DEVICES
Different networking devices have different roles to play in a computer
network. These network devices also work at different segments of a computer
network performing different works.

HUBS

Hubs enable computers on a network to communicate. Each computer plugs

into the hub with an Ethernet cable, and information sent from one computer to
another passes through the hub.

A hub can't identify the source or intended destination of the information it

receives, so it sends the information to all of the computers connected to it, including
the one that sent it. A hub can send or receive information, but it can't do both at
the same time.

SWITCH

Switches work the same way as hubs, but they can identify the intended
destination of the information that they receive, so they send that information to only
the computers that are supposed to receive it. Switches can send and receive
information at the same time, so they can send information faster than hubs can.

https://safebytes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/capture111.png
BRIDGE

A bridge is a computer networking device that builds the connection with the
other bridge networks which use the same protocol. It works at the Data Link layer
of the OSI Model and connects the different networks together and develops
communication between them. It connects two local-area networks; two physical
LANs into larger logical LAN or two segments of the same LAN that use the same
protocol.

ROUTER

Routers enable computers to communicate and they can pass information

between two networks—such as between your home network and the Internet.

MR6350.jpg
WIRELESS ACCESS POINT (AP OR WAP)

Access points (also called base stations) provide wireless access to a wired
Ethernet network. An access point plugs into a hub, switch, or wired router and
sends out wireless signals. This enables computers and devices to connect to a wired
network wirelessly.

http://blog.router-switch.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/ceiling-ap.png

PATCH PANEL

A panel that allows multiple devices to be connected and managed in a more

efficient manner. Computer networks, sound studios, television stations, and a
number of other systems use patch panels to deal with components of their electronic
systems.

MODULAR BOX (NETWORK)

It is a surface mounted box used in a commercial and industrial building to

cleanly attach network cables. It is commonly used in a structured network.

https://techusapdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2019/09/image-12.png?w=907

REPEATER

A network device used to regenerate or replicate

a signal. Repeaters are used in transmission systems to
regenerate analog or digital signals distorted by
transmission loss. Analog repeaters frequently can only
amplify the signal while digital repeaters can
reconstruct a signal to near its original quality.

RJ45

Short for Registered Jack-45, a RJ-45 is an 8-

pin connection used for Ethernet network adapters.

NETWORK CABLE TESTER

A cable tester is a device that is used to test the

strength and connectivity of a particular type of cable.

PUNCH DOWN TOOL

A punch down tool, also called a krone tool, is a
hand tool used to connect telecommunications and
network wires to a patch panel, punch down block,
keystone module, or surface mount box.
