User Guide 424 Revision B

GL 6LJQDO$FFHVV0RGXOH709

424.1 Introduction
The Signal Access Module V (SAM V) enables monitoring of NanoScope™ Scanning Probe
Microscope (SPM) signals that are otherwise “internal.” In addition, external signals can be
injected to the SPM for control or processing by connecting the signal sources through SAM V (see
Figure 1a). The SAM V is designed to replace the SAM III for systems using the NanoScope V
Controller such as the Dimension V, Dimension 5000, BioScope 2 and BioScope SZ. Microscopes
that use a a single 37-pin cable such as the MultiMode V, PicoForce, MS-10 and EnviroScope do
not require a SAM V and the SAM III should be used instead.

SAM V BNC connectors interface with most standard laboratory instruments. Twenty-five SPM
signals and ten Application Module signals are available using SAM V. Toggle switches enable
switching each line separately between a normal, uninterrupted configuration and an external input
signal. Output BNC connectors permit monitoring of both conditioned and uninterrupted signals
for use in experiments.

Note: In the interest of clarity, certain nomenclature is preferred. A SPM probe

comprises a tip affixed to a cantilever mounted on a base, which is inserted
in a probe holder.

Three font styles distinguish among contexts. For example:

Rev. B SAM V 5
Safety Precautions

WARNING: Voltages supplied to and within certain areas of the

system are potentially dangerous and can cause injury to
personnel. Power-down everything and unplug from
sources of power before doing ANY electrical servicing.
(Veeco personnel, only).

Bevor elektrische Servicearbeiten
irgendwelcher Art durchgeführt werden ist das System
auszuschalten und vom Netz zu trennen. (Nur Veeco
Personal).

ATTENTION: While providing maximum access to SPM electronics, SAM V also

makes the system more vulnerable to abuse. Veeco assumes no
responsibility for repair costs to the SPM or peripheral equipment
associated with misuse of SAM V.

6 SAM V Rev. B
Safety Precautions

DANGER: The bottom row of connectors on the top panel of SAM V features seven
output lines with maximum voltages of 220VAC and currents up to
70mA. The unit is shipped with all high voltage BNC connectors covered
by red insulating caps. DO NOT REMOVE INSULATING CAPS UNTIL
BNC CONNECTORS ARE TO BE USED! RECOVER CONNECTORS
NO LONGER IN USE. TURN OFF POWER TO THE NANOSCOPE
CONTROLLER BEFORE MAKING HIGH VOLTAGE
CONNECTIONS TO SAM V.
Don’t touch the high voltage contacts, when SAM V is powered through an
SPM! Accidental contact with the high voltage lines may result in serious
injury. Do not insert foreign objects (e.g., screwdrivers, etc.) into high
voltage BNC connectors.

All lines are unfused. Add fuses or optoisolators to protect external

equipment.

Before connecting between the SPM and SAM V, test all new connections
with a multimeter or oscilloscope to verify minimum and maximum
voltage, current and impedance levels. Compare measured values to the
safe operating ranges listed in Table 2b, on the next page.

Signals are listed on the bottom panel of SAM V (see Figure 424.2c).

Under normal conditions, external devices should not interfere with

imaging electronics. However, to ensure the integrity of image data,
verify that any device which is used to insert a signal into the SAM V has
an output impedance of ≤1KΩ. Devices receiving signals from the SAM V
(e.g., oscilloscope) should have input impedances of ≥1MΩ. If it is
necessary to work beyond these impedance limits, contact Veeco for
instructions.

To avoid confusion, clearly label multiple cables connecting to SAM V.

NEVER CONNECT TWO OUTPUTS DIRECTLY TOGETHER.

Do not disassemble SAM V due to the risk of high voltage shock. If SAM
V is suspected of failing, return the entire unit to Veeco for repair or
replacement.

CAUTION: The SAM V contains sensitive electronics and should be handled with
care. Avoid dropping or bumping components, especially once outside the
shipping box.

CAUTION: Cables should not be removed or installed while power is applied

to the system.

Connecting cables while power is applied may damage the

instrument.

CAUTION: Ensure that the microscope and controller cables are firmly seated
in their connectors by tightening the cable clamps with the 3/32”
Allen wrench.

Connections with cables that are not firmly seated may become
open and damage the instrument.

Toggle all switches on SAM V to OUTPUT (the position for normal, uninterrupted operation), then
power down the SPM and NanoScope controller.

SAM V is always connected to an SPM via two cables attached to SAM V through the connectors
labelled TO MICROSCOPE (see Figure 3d). SAM V is always connected to an SPM controller via
two other cables attached to SAM V through the connectors labelled TO NANOSCOPE
CONTROLLER (see Figure 3d).

Example Uses of SAM V

424.5 Example Uses of SAM V

The simplest use of SAM V is to output NanoScope signals otherwise unavailable in hardware or
software; this is illustrated in the first two examples below.

SAM V can also be used to inject signals into the NanoScope/SPM system. Three reasons for
connecting external signals to SAM V are:

1. To insert an external data signal into the NanoScope Controller (e.g. examples 3 and 4),

2. To insert an external control signal into the NanoScope Controller (e.g., example 5) and

3. To insert an external piezo drive signal to the SPM (e.g. examples 6 and 7).

In addition, SAM V facilitates modulating an input with an output (e.g. example 8).

DANGER: Review Safety Precautions, page 4 before making any connections to

SAM V.

424.5.4 Example 6: Insert a Piezo Drive Signal

1. Locate the pair of input and output BNC connectors labelled Z on the top panel of SAM V.

2. Toggle the switch to the INPUT position (to the left).

3. Connect a BNC cable between the input (the lefthand) connector and an external piezo drive
signal source (see Figure 5f).

Note: This typically requires high voltage.

Top Panel: Modulate the Tip Bias Voltage

1. Locate the pair of input and output BNC connectors labelled TIP BIAS on the top panel of
SAM V.

Note: Set the TIP BIAS CONTROL in the NanoScope software to TIP BIAS.

2. Toggle the switch to the INPUT position (to the left).

3. Connect a BNC cable between the input (the lefthand) connector and the output of a
summing amplifier whose inputs are the BIAS output and an external waveform generator
(see Figure 5h).

Seller assumes no liability under the above warranties for equipment or system failures resulting from (1) abuse, misuse,
modification or mishandling; (2) damage due to forces external to the machine including, but not limited to, acts of God,
flooding, power surges, power failures, defective electrical work, transportation, foreign equipment/attachments or Buyer-
supplied replacement parts or utilities or services such as gas; (3) improper operation or maintenance or (4) failure to perform
preventive maintenance in accordance with Seller’s recommendations (including keeping an accurate log of preventive main-
tenance). In addition, this warranty does not apply if any equipment or part has been modified without the written permission
of Seller or if any Seller serial number has been removed or defaced.
No one is authorized to extend or alter these warranties on Seller’s behalf without the written authorization of Seller.
