V. Learning Activities
English, like all other languages, varies from very formal to the very informal.
It is, however, important to note that “formal” does not necessarily mean better. This
is because the level of usage chosen by any language user depends on the
audience and on the situation. This is also true in communication.

In the previous module that you worked with, you learned how Casual
communicative style is used. This time you will learn another communicative style
which is Formal.
2
Formal Communicative Style is a type of verbal presentation or document intended
to share information, which conforms to establish professional rules, standards and
processes and avoid slang terms.

This language is used in formal settings and is one way in nature. This use of
language usually follows a commonly accepted format. It is usually impersonal and
formal.

This speech style is expected to be presented in complete sentences with specific

word usage.

It is usually elaborate complex sentences and noun phrases are well structured,
logically sequenced, and strongly coherent.

It does not allow ellipsis (like omissions, contractions, qualifying modal adverbials
(like probably, possibly, evidently, surely, certainly and subjectively markers).

The standard of correctness in this style is high. Some phrases which are considered
correct (or at least acceptable) in casual or informal English, are wrong in Formal
English. For instance, refer to the following sentences:
“We have made less mistakes.”
(formal: “We made less mistakes.”)
“She’s liking it.” (formal: “She likes it.”)
Examples: sermons, rhetorical statements and questions, speeches,
pronouncements made by Judges, announcements
