INTRODUCTION
Networking in computer systems refers to the process of connecting two or more
computing devices to share resources such as files, applications, internet connections, and
printers. The importance of networking in a computer laboratory cannot be
overemphasized as it facilitates collaboration, communication, centralized storage, and
internet access for both students and lecturers.
This technical report is on the networking of the OTM Computer Laboratory (ICT 2.1 lab),
which is an essential component of ICT-based learning in Auchi Polytechnic.
OBJECTIVES OF THE REPORT
- To provide students with practical knowledge of computer networking.
- To expose students to network tools, equipment, and installation techniques.
- To explain the process of setting up a Local Area Network (LAN) in a computer laboratory.
- To enhance collaborative learning by providing a centralized communication system.
- To prepare students for real-world ICT and networking challenges.
SUMMARY
This report covers the following key areas:
- Tools and materials required for computer networking.
- Step-by-step procedures of networking a computer laboratory.
- Network topologies suitable for computer labs.
- Installation of networking devices (switches, routers, cables, etc.).
- Network diagrams and pictorial illustrations of the process.
- Challenges faced during the project and solutions.
DETAILS OF WORK DONE
TOOLS USED IN NETWORKING
- Crimping Tool
- Cable Tester
- Screwdrivers
- Punch Down Tool
- Network Analyzer
- Measuring Tape
- Drill Machine
MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT
- Network Switch
- Router
- RJ45 Connectors
- CAT6 Ethernet Cables
- Network Racks
- Patch Panels
- Desktop Computers
- Wireless Access Point
PROCESS OF LAB NETWORKING
Step 1: Planning and Designing the Network Topology – The lab adopts a Star Topology
where all systems connect to a central switch.
Step 2: Laying of Network Cables – CAT6 Ethernet cables were measured, cut, and crimped
with RJ45 connectors.
Step 3: Installation of Networking Devices – Switches, routers, and patch panels were
installed.
Step 4: Connection of Computers – Each system was connected to the switch using Ethernet
cables, IP addresses were configured.
Step 5: Testing and Troubleshooting – Connectivity verified using testers and ping
commands.
Step 6: Internet Integration – Router was configured to provide internet access.

CONCLUSION
The networking of the ICT 2.1 Laboratory was successfully carried out using star topology.
The computers were connected through CAT6 cables to a central switch, with a router
providing internet connectivity. This project provided hands-on experience in network
design, installation, and troubleshooting, thereby bridging the gap between theory and
practice.
