MAPPINGS
The rule connecting the input and output values can be
written algebraically as 𝑥 ↦ 𝑥 + 1.
This is read as ‘𝑥 is mapped to 𝑥 + 1’

MANY-ONE MANY-MANY
Types of mappings
Function
✓ A mapping is a function if and only
if each object has only one image.
✓ Thus, both one-one and many-one
mapping represent functions.
Example
Which of the following numerical mappings is a function?
Multiply by 2 and Take the square
add 5 root of the number
This is a function This is not a function
Defining Functions
We must have:
● A set of object (input) values
● A rule telling you what to do with the object values
● Some idea of what the image (output) values might be
● A name for the function
The set of object values is called domain.
The set of output values we can obtain called the range.
Domain and
Range of
Function
The set of input values for a function is
called the domain of the function.
The set of output values for a function
is called the range of the function.
We say "f of x equals x squared"
FUNCTION
NAME
FINDING THE VALUE OF A FUNCTION
You are given the function
𝑓: → 2𝑥 + 5; 𝑥 ∈ 𝑅, −2 < 𝑥 < 5.
Find:
a. 𝑓 2
b. the range of the function
SOLUTION
a. 𝑓 2 = 2 2 + 5 = 9
b. The graph of 𝑓(𝑥) is shown. It is linear and
𝑥 can take any real value between -2 and
5. Thus, the range 1 < 𝑓 𝑥 < 15.
Example 1
𝒇 𝒙 = 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏, 𝒙 ∈ ℝ, −𝟏 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 𝟑
a. The domain of the function is −1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3.
b. Sketch the graph of the function f.
c. The range of the function f is −3 ≤ 𝑓 𝑥 ≤
5.
Example 2
𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒙−𝟐 𝟐 + 𝟑, 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒙 ∈ ℝ, 𝟎 ≤ 𝒙 ≤ 𝟔 .
The minimum value of the expression is 0 + 3
= 3 and this minimum occurs when 𝑥 = 2.
So the function 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 2 2 + 3 will have a
minimum point at the point (2,3).
When 𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = 7
When 𝑥 = 6, 𝑦 = 19
The range is 3 ≤ 𝑓 𝑥 ≤ 19

COMPOSITE FUNCTION
The function 𝑥 → 2𝑥 + 5 is the function
'multiply by 2 and then add 5'. It is a
combination of the two functions g and f
where:
𝑔: 𝑥 → 2𝑥 (the function 'multiply by 2')
𝑓: 𝑥 → 𝑥 + 5 (the function 'add 5')
So, 𝑥 → 2𝑥 + 5 is the function 'first do g
then do f’.

“The inverse of a function f(x) is the function
