Criteria of Good Research & Problems Encountered by Researchers

This document outlines the key characteristics of good research and problems encountered by researchers in India. It states that good research should have a clearly defined purpose and scope, a reproducible procedure, careful procedural design, limitations reported, adequate data analysis and validation, and conclusions justified by evidence. It also describes good research as being logical, systematic, empirical and replicable. The document then lists several common problems researchers face in India, such as a lack of scientific training, insufficient interaction with other institutions, lack of confidence and a code of conduct, inadequate assistance, improper library management, and high costs of publishing. It emphasizes that resolving these issues is important to make effective use of researchers' time and resources.

The purpose of research should be clearly defined

and common concepts be used.

This means the scope and limitations of the
research to be defined.
The procedure to be clearly explained so that it can
be reproduced and verified by other researchers.
i.e. The research procedure used should have
enough details so that another researcher can repeat
the research for further advancement keeping the
continuity of what has already attained.
The procedural design of the research should be
carefully planned so as to attain the objective.

Continued..
The researcher should report limitations of the
research and their effects on the findings.
The data should be adequately analysed and
explained. The validity and reliability of the data
should be checked carefully.
Conclusions should be justified by sufficient
evidence.
If the researcher is experienced and has a good
reputation in the field of research, greater
confidence in research is warranted and we can
expect
a good
research.
In short,
at every
point of the research work ,

go back to them to ensure that the work

is in line with these qualities.

Characteristics Of Good Research

Systematic : One step of research leads to other
and it is devoid of any guess work or intuition at
arriving to the conclusions.
Logical: It is guided by the rules of logical reasoning
and it establishes relationship between different
variables.
Empirical: It is self evident . i.e the research can be
related to aspects of real situations.
Replicable: The study can be replicated to
anywhere and similar results should be generated.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY RESEARCHERS IN INDIA

Lack of Scientific Training:The research methodology is not

systematic. Many researchers undertake research work without
having actual knowledge of the research methods. They just look
for similar studies and copy the methodologies listed in it. Even
the research guides do not have a thorough knowledge of the
various methodologies.

Solution for the Problem : Short-term training to be imparted to

researchers prior to undertaking research activities and systematic
study of research methodology should be done.

Insufficient Interaction:There is no proper interaction between

researchers and the business establishments, government
institutions, etc. This leads to a great deal of data going untapped.

Solution for the problem: Interaction programs should be

organized between researchers and other institutions on a regular
basis. This will highlight what issues need to be researched, what
data is required for conducting research, and how the study will be
useful.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY RESEARCHERS IN INDIA

Continued
Lack of Confidence:Most of the business establishments are of
the opinion that, researchers can misuse the data provided by
them. As such, they are reluctant to divulge details of their
company. This affects the research studies for which that
particular data may be of utmost importance.

Solution for the problem: Confidence-building measures should be

adopted, which will convince the business units that their data will
be put to productive purposes, and will not be misused in any
manner by the researcher.
Lack of Code of Conduct:No specific code of conduct exists for
the researchers, which leads to inter-departmental and interuniversity rivalries.

Solution for the problem: There is need for developing a code of

conduct for researchers which can win over the problem.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY RESEARCHERS IN INDIA

Continued
Inadequate Assistance:Researchers in India have to cope with
the non-availability of adequate and timely secretarial assistance,
which affects the schedule of their research study.

Solution for the problem:Efforts should be made in this direction so

that efficient secretarial assistance is made available .University
Grants Commission must play important role in solving this
difficulty.
(TheUniversity
Grants Commission(UGC) ofIndiais a
statutory body set up by the IndianUnion governmentin 1956,
and is charged with coordination, determination and maintenance
of standards ofhigher education)

Improper Library Management:The libraries are not managed

systematically. Much of the precious time of the researchers is
spent in looking for books, reports, newspapers, etc. rather than
searching relevant information from them. There is also the
problem that many of our libraries dont have copies of old and
new Acts/Rules,reports and other government publications .

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY RESEARCHERS IN INDIA

Continued
High Cost of Publishing:Once their research is completed, the
researchers have to look for a means to publish it. Publishing in
international journals is highly expensive. This discourages most of
the researchers from taking up research work.

Solution for the problem:Open-access e-journalscan solve the

problem to a great extent. If universities and scholarly societies,
through expanding open access, can have more control on prices
of the journals.
(Open access (OA) journalsarescholarly journalsthat are
available online to the reader without financial, legal, or technical
barriers.)

Conclusion
Time
is
money:
During
research,
researchers have to collect information
from various sources which gets delayed
due to the above reasons and is a waste of
time. If we loose our time we are loosing
money.

Hence the problems encountered by

researchers should be resolved.
