the test variables: Attitude and Action (Independent), Strategic
Planning (Mediator) , Benefits of Business Sustainability Practices
(Dependent) and Barriers of Business Sustainability Practices
(Extraneous) . General attitude, Responsibility, ecological,
environmental, and socio-cultural will also be considered as
Independent variables. Thirty (30) participants will be gathered for
quantitative respondents, out of thirty, five (5) will be gathered as
qualitative respondents. The standardized, researcher-made,
normalized and validated instruments will be used. The timeline will be
one (1) month.
Research Design
This study will utilize the mixed methods of research, employing
the descriptive (correlational approach), employing the Spearman
Correlation Coefficient for the quantitative analysis and Kruskal Wallis
Test in the qualitative analysis. The profile of the establishments, the
attitudes and actions of owners or managers and the benefits and
barriers of sustainable practices is gathered for the study. Further, the
relationship and difference between the variables will be statistically
established.
The study uses purposive sampling technique to collect data
from a sample of managers or owners of various accommodation
industry establishments.
Research Environment
This study will utilize the mixed methods of research, employing
the descriptive (correlational approach), employing the Spearman
Correlation Coefficient for the quantitative analysis and Kruskal Wallis
Test in the qualitative analysis. The profile of the establishments, the
attitudes and actions of owners or managers and the benefits and
barriers of sustainable practices is gathered for the study. Further, the
relationship and difference between the variables will be statistically
established.
The study uses purposive sampling technique to collect data
from a sample of managers or owners of various accommodation
industry establishments.
Research Participants
The population of this study consisted of thirty (30 selected
participants, according to a set of criteria, (i) 1-3 star classification, (ii)
in the accommodation industry, (iii) establishment must either be
owner-managed, franchise or part of hotel chain, and (iv) has operated
for 3 or more years. The name of the managers or owners from the
different accommodation industries is being withheld to ensure
anonymity. (In addition, the population of the different establishments
will be withheld; however the number of owners or managers that
completed the survey will be shared.) This population sample
accumulates the attitude and actions of managers towards sustainable
business.
RESEARCH
INSTRUMENT
• In conducting the study, survey questionnaires and semi-structured
interviews will be used to gather data. A standardized survey
questionnaire will be distributed to all the respondents together with
the transmittal letter that proves the legality of the study.
• The questionnaire will be divided into four (4) parts. Part I will
ask the characteristics of the accommodation industry establishment
which gathers data about the characteristics of the hotel, such as
classification, typology, ownership, bed spaces, employees, and year
of business opening.
RESEARCH
INSTRUMENT
• Part II is the tool to determine the attitude and actions taken by
managers or owners towards sustainable business practices. Part III
will delve on the strategic planning of the owners or managers, Part
IV focuses on the benefits of sustainable business practices and Part V
is about the barriers of sustainable business practices.
• The questionnaire was designed according to the rules for
questionnaire construction, layout and question content (Sarantakos,
2005). All attitude statements were constructed regarding criteria for
attitude statements summarized by Edwards (1957). Possible
problems that could affect the validity of the questionnaire are
carelessness of respondents, social desirability, extremity of response
and acquiescence (Oskamp, 1997).
RESEARCH
INSTRUMENT
• Conducting a pilot study to test the questionnaire for potential
misunderstandings or problems and consequently correct possible
weaknesses and inadequacies is recommended before the actual data
collection commences (Veal, 2006; Brunt, 1997; Sarantakos, 2005).
• The questionnaire was already pilot-tested with accommodation
businesses outside of Vienna so the main survey would not be biased
through the pilot.
• Semi-structured questionnaire is given on several research
assumptions such as a) avoidance of personal bias, b) less pressure
for immediate response, and giving the respondents a greater feeling
of anonymity.
Research procedure
• Gathering of Data
• After acquiring all the formal permission that the
researcher must acquire from managers where the
data will be collected, they will delve into the
gathering of data needed on the profile of the
respondents, attitude and actions of the business. For
this, the researcher is allotting one (1) month to
gather and compile all the data needed.
Research procedure
• The researcher will self-administer the survey
questionnaire and conduct an in-depth interview. The
time limit in answering the 3 parts of survey
questionnaire will be 3-5 minutes. This is done to
ensure that all items are answered correctly. The
interpretation of the statistical tool of Pearson
Product Moment Correlation Coefficient will used to
quantify the actions and attitude among companies in
Lapu-Lapu City.
Research procedure
• For qualitative data, an in-depth interview will be
done choosing only 15 managers from the selected
respondents using purposive sampling. The
respondents must fully expressed their willingness to
participate and should sign the inform consent. The
in-depth interview will be done in the office of
managers at about 5-7 minutes per session. Data will
be coded and interpreted through themes.
Research procedure
• A 5-minute documentary will also be prepared based
on the concept of the problem, findings, conclusions
and recommendations.
Research procedure
Statistical Treatment
The data gathered will be defer to the following
statistical treatments:
Simple Percentage will be computed to analyze the
background information of the respondents.
Weighted Mean will determine the entire response
distribution of the respondents. The following are the
parameter limits:
