Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Co-Polymers (Eva)

Ethylene vinyl acetate co-polymers (EVA) are elastomeric materials containing 40-60% vinyl acetate. EVA has good resistance to dry heat, ozone, weathering, and swelling in oils and solvents. It can withstand continuous temperatures up to 120 degrees Celsius and has low temperature flexibility down to around -40 degrees Celsius. EVA can be compounded with peroxides as curing agents and carbon black as the preferred filler. It can be processed via internal mixing and vulcanized in presses or via other curing methods.

ETHYLENE VINYL ACETATE CO-POLYMERS (EVA)

CO-POLYMERS OF ETHYLENE AND VINYL ACETATE ARE

ELASTOMERIC IN THE 40-60% VA RANGE, COMMERCIALLY
AVAILABLE GRADES CONTAINING USUALLY 40-45%.

THE CO-POLYMER IS SUBSTANTIALLY AMORPHOUS AT 40%

VA CONTENT BUT RETAINS SOME OF THE
THERMOPLASTICITY OF POLYETHYLENE.

ETHYLENE VINYL ACETATE

EVA IS CHARACTERISED BY GOOD DRY HEAT, OZONE AND
WEATHER RESISTANCE. HEAT RESISTANCE IS SIMILAR TO
POLYACRYLICS AND RESISTANCE TO SWELLING IN OILS
AND SOLVENTS IS INFERIOR TO CHLOROPRENES AND
NITRILE RUBBER VULCANISED EVA CAN WITHSTAND
TEMPERATURE OF 120 DEGREE C CONTINUOUSLY. THE
LOW TEMPERATURE FLEXIBILITY LIMIT IS AROUND – 40
DEGREE C. THEY HAVE GOOD RESISTANCE TO
COMPRESSION SET AT HIGH TEMPERATURES.

HIGHER IS THE VA CONTENT – HIGHER IS OIL RESISTANCE

BUT ELECTRICAL INSULATION PROPERTIES ARE LOWER.
COMPOUNDING:

PEROXIDES LIKE DICUMYL PEROXIDE(90%) ARE USED IN THE

RANGE OF 1 – 1.5 PHR WHEREAS 40% PEROXIDE ARE USED
IN THE RANGE OF 3 – 4 PHR. CARBON BLACK IS THE
PREFERED FILLER FOR EVA. THEY CAN BE USED IN THE
RANGE OF 60 – 80 PHR. MINERAL FILLERS AND PLASTICISERS
SHOULD BE SELECTED CAREFULLY TO AVOID
INTERFERENCE WITH VULCANISATION. FOR OPTIMUM HEAT
RESISTANCE A POLYCARBODIAMIDE TYPE ANTIOXIDANT MAY
BE USED. CURE SYSTEMS CAN BE BOOSTED BY ADDING A
CO-AGENT SUCH A TRI ALLYL CYANURATE (TAC). STEARIC
ACID IN THE RANGE 1-3 PHR AND PLASTICIZER IN THE
RANGE 0 – 10 PHR ARE USED
PROCESSING:

EVA CAN BE MIXED ON MILL OR IN INTERNAL MIXER.

STEARIC ACID IS ADDED IN THE BEGINNING. PEROXIDE IS
ADDED ON A COOL MILL.

COLD MIXES STIFF DUE TO THERMOPLASTICITY
THEREFORE WARMING IS NECESSARY BEFORE BLANK
PREPARATION.

VULCANISATION CAN BE CARRIED OUT IN PRESS, OPEN
STEAM CURE, ROTOCURE OR INJECTION MOULDING.
