HTML is the standard markup language used to create web pages. It uses tags to define headings, paragraphs, lists, and other elements. An HTML document has a basic structure, including a <head> section and <body> section wrapped in <html> tags. It contains various elements like headings, paragraphs, lists, and more. Common HTML tags include headings, paragraphs, lists, breaks, and more to structure content.

Introduction to HTML
• HTML – Hypertext Markup Language, the language used to
design web pages.
• HTML – Tim Berners-Lee – 1989
• HTML is based on SGML (Standard Generalized Markup
Language) – International Standard for text markup
• HTML 2.0 – 1995
HTML-hypertext
• Hypertext is basically the same as regular text - it can
be stored, read, searched, or edited - with an important
exception: hypertext is text with pointers to other text.
The browsers let you deal with the pointers in a
transparent way -- select the pointer, and you are
presented with the text that is pointed to.
Hyper media
• Hypermedia is a superset of hypertext. Hypermedia
documents contain links not only to other pieces of
text, but also to other forms of media - sounds,
images, and movies. Images themselves can be
selected to link to sounds or documents. This means
that browsers might not display a text file, but might
display images or sound or animations. Hypermedia
simply combines hypertext and multimedia.
Basic HTML tools
HTML editor

• There are various forms of HTML editors:
• Text Editors

HTML Documents
• All HTML documents must start with a document
type declaration: <!DOCTYPE html>.
• The HTML document itself begins with <html> and
ends with </html>.
• The visible part of the HTML document is
between <body> and </body>.
General structure of HTML document
• An HTML document is composed of three parts:
• A line containing HTML document type
• The !DOCTYPE Declaration
• A declarative header element (delimited by the HEAD tag)
• The Document’s HEAD
• A body, which contains the document’s actual content (delimited by
BODY tag)
• The Document’s BODY
• Both the head and the body must be enclosed in
<html>…..</html>

HTML Elements
• An HTML element usually consists of a start tag and an end tag,
with the content inserted in between:
• <tagname>Content goes here...</tagname>
• The HTML element is everything from the start tag to the end tag:
• <p>My first paragraph.</p>

Start tag Element content End tag

<h1> My First Heading </h1>
<p> My first paragraph. </p>
<br>
• HTML elements with no content are called empty elements.
Empty elements do not have an end tag, such as the <br> element
(which indicates a line break).
Structural Elements
• body
• br (<br>)
• hr (<hr>)
• h1 to h6 (<h1>…</h1> to <h6>…</h6>)
• head (<head>…</head>)
• Html (<html>…</html>)
• p (<p>…</p>)
Head Elements
• base (<base href=“url”> </base>)
• title (<title>…</title>
List Elements
• List elements include all the elements related to lists – ordered
lists, unordered lists, and the less-common definition list – as
well as the attributes that are unique to these elements.
• HTML offers web authors three ways for specifying lists of
information. All lists must contain one or more list elements.
Lists may contain −
• <ul> − An unordered list. This will list items using plain
bullets.
• <ol> − An ordered list. This will use different schemes of
numbers to list your items.
• <dl> − A definition list. This arranges your items in the same
way as they are arranged in a dictionary.
