 E commerce security is the protection of e


commerce assets from unauthorized
access, use, alteration or destruction.

 Everyone using the web for e business and


e commerce needs to be concerned about
the security of their personal information.

 There are several protocols that provide


transaction security, such as Secure
Sockets Layer(SSL) and Secure
Electronic Transaction(SET).

Socket Layer(SSL)

 Developed by Netscape Communications, is a


nonproprietary protocol commonly used to
secure communication on the internet and the
web.

 It operates between the Internet’s TCP/IP


communications protocol and application
software.

Phases of SSL protocol
z Secure Electronic Transaction
(SET)
 It was developed by Visa International and Mastercard.

 It is an open encryption and security specification designed to protect the e-commerce payment
transactions on the internet.

Services of SET:
• Provides secure communication
channel.
• Provides authentication by use of
digital certificates.
• Ensures cofidentiality.

z HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer
Protocol SECURE)
 It is a set of security
mechanisms defined for
protecting Internet traffic.

 It is an application level
protocol that extends the
HTTP protocol by adding
encryption to web pages.

 It also provides mechanisms


for authentication and
signature of messages.
