Smart Glasses For The Blind

This document outlines a project to develop smart glasses to help blind people navigate independently. It discusses objectives like using a camera and computer vision to recognize objects and environments and provide information audibly. The literature review covers existing systems using technologies like ultrasonic sensors, GPS, and augmented reality. The proposed system aims to determine each object in a room rather than just detect obstacles. It will use Raspberry Pi, a camera, and ultrasonic sensor with software for computer vision, object recognition and speech synthesis. Potential advantages are independence and determining specific objects, while disadvantages could include cost and relying on another device for processing.

Objective
 Our main purpose of this project is to help blind
people see, not literally but make life a little bit easier
for them.
 Glasses can capture image via camera and recognize
images and determine each object in the images.
 Compute the distance between the person and each
object and convert the information to voice using
headphone.
Abstract
• Developing a tool for the visually impaired people is not a
recently emerged problem. But developing a computer aided
tool is a still developing area. The aim of all these systems is
to help the user in navigation without the help of a second
person.
• There are several works using computer vision techniques.
But there is no exciting method that help to solve the all basic
needs of blind person.
• All exciting systems are designed only for a specific purpose.
In this project, we propose new method which combines the
key aspects of some use full methods and added some extra
capabilities for assisting the blind person.
• This new system may solve some of the major problems of
blind persons that are still existing. Also , we give a
comparison and analysis of the current use full navigation
methods.
Introduction
• Could you imagine how the life of a person who is
blind could be? Many of them can’t even walk without
the help of others.
• Their life always depends upon their caregivers and
can be quite difficult for them alone. The increasing
number of people with disabilities in world attracts the
concern of researchers to invent various technologies,
hoping that these technologies can assist the disabled
people in carrying out their tasks in everyday life like
normal people.
• So we want to make something for them that would
help them become independent.

Engineering, University Teknologi PETRONAS.

• People with visual impairment face various problems in their daily life as the
modern assistive devices are often not meeting the consumer requirements in
term of price and level of assistance.
• This paper presents a new design of assistive smart glasses for visually
impaired students. The objective is to assist in multiple daily tasks using the
advantage of wearable design format.
• As a proof of concept, this paper only presents one example application, i.e.
text recognition technology that can help reading from hardcopy materials.
The building cost is kept low by using single board computer raspberry pi 2 as
the heart of processing and the raspberry pi 2 camera for image capturing.
• Experiment results demonstrate that the prototype is working as intended
Smart Guiding Glasses for Visually Impaired
People in Indoor Environment
Author:-Jinqiang Bai, Shiguo Lian, Member, IEEE, Zhaoxiang Liu, Kai Wang, Dijun Liu
 To overcome the travelling difficulty for the visually impaired group, this
paper presents a novel ETA (Electronic Travel Aids)-smart guiding device
in the shape of a pair of eyeglasses for giving these people guidance
efficiently and safely.
 Different from existing works, a novel multi-sensor fusion based obstacle
avoiding algorithm is proposed, which utilizes both the depth sensor and
ultrasonic sensor to solve the problems of detecting small obstacles, and
transparent obstacles, e.g. the French door.
 For totally blind people, three kinds of auditory cues were developed to
inform the direction where they can go ahead. Whereas for weak sighted
people, visual enhancement which leverages the AR (Augment Reality)
technique and integrates the traversable direction is adopted.
A Unique Smart Eye Glass for Visually
Impaired People
Md. Razu Miah and Md. Sanwar Hussain

• A unique smart glass for visually impaired people to overcome the travelling
difficulties. It can detect the obstacle and measure the distance perfectly using the
ultrasonic sensor and a microcontroller.
• After receiving information from the environment, it passes to the blind person
through a headphone.
• The GSM/GPRS SIM900A module is used to collect the information from the
internet. A switch is connected to the system which is used for an emergency task
like sending SMS, including time, temperature and location to the subject's
guardian when visually impaired people fall into any danger.
•  By using the smart glass visually impaired people can walk in an indoor and
outdoor environment.

Advantages of the project
• Easy to use and carry.
• Work through all angles.
• Determine each object in the room not just
say there is obstacle.
Disadvantages of the project
• Focusing on software will acquire to use
another device such as laptop or mobile to
perform software processing on it.
• Focusing on hardware will make the project
budget very expensive.
