Computer Network Topology

The document summarizes two network topologies: 1) The bus topology connects computers serially using a single main cable. It is simple but faults can stop all transmission. 2) The tree topology combines star and bus features, with multiple levels connecting through a central hub. It is more expensive but errors can be isolated to specific devices.

Topology Tree
The bus topology is a network
model that connects two or
more computers serially using
the main cable as a data traffic
center. Usually using this model
is a small-scale network with the
bus as a single cable connecting
all network devices.

NAME OR LOGO 2
Function The function of the bus topology is to connect two or
more computer networks so that they can exchange
data or information.

BUS Topology NAME OR LOGO 4
Because all the components in it
consisting of BNC, T connector,
terminator, and coaxial cable as data
transmission media form a circuit that
Why called BUS ? is similar to a room on a bus.

NAME OR LOGO 5
Characteristics BUS Topology

○ All computers on the network are connected by a single cable

as a transmission medium.
○ There is a single cable that runs along the network which
functions as the main cable (backbone) and serves as the data
line.
○ At each end of the main cable a terminator is attached which
functions to stop the signal and prevent collisions between
signals.

NAME OR LOGO 6
○ How does it work?
○ When all computers are
connected to the main cable, they
can send and receive data or
information. But for this to work,
the main cable must be in a free
condition, aka not exchanging
data. This process uses a Carrier
Sense Multiple Access / Collision
Detection (CSMA / CD) protocol
which keeps the data on the main

cable from colliding with each
other.

ADVANTAGES of Bus Topology

○ It is very simple to install.

○ It is less cable required to connect
the devices compared to other
topology.
○ It is cost-effective.

DISADVANTAGES of Tree Topology

○ Complicated reconfiguration and

fault detection.
○ If any fault in backbone cable
then stops all transmission.

A tree topology combines the Star
and Bus topology features. It has a
host computer like the star topology,
and a single cable connects all the
devices like a bus topology. This
topology divides the network into
multiple levels. It is also known as
TREE Topology a hierarchy topology.

Function Tree topology is used for interconnection between
hierarchies with different centers.

TREE Topology NAME OR LOGO 12
Tree topology is also often referred to
as tree topology. This is because
when depicted, this network has a
tree-like shape because it has twigs
Why called TREE ? and branches.

NAME OR LOGO 13
Characteristics TREE Topology

○ There is a backbone that functions as the main

node that connects the network.
○ Has tiers in the network or network hierarchy.
○ There is a HUB which functions as a control and
data center on the network.
○ Data communication must be through HUB or
control center.

NAME OR LOGO 14
ADVANTAGES of Tree Topology

○ If sub-device is failed, only that device is

affected, and all other devices remain
active.
○ In a tree topology, it is easy to extend the
network.
○ It has point-to-point wiring for single
devices.
○ Error correction and error detection are
easily done.

NAME OR LOGO 15
DISADVANTAGES of Tree Topology

○ Tree topology is very expensive

than the other topology.
○ If a node fails, then troubleshoot
becomes difficult.
○ Bulky wires are used in the tree
topology
○ Huge cabling is needed.
○ A lot of maintenance is needed.

NAME OR LOGO 16
○ How does it work?
○ The workings of the tree
topology is to form a network
that uses a system with a
branching tree. In the tree
topology, there is a multilevel
system which will be used as an
interconnection medium between
centers, where each
interconnection has a different
hierarchy.
