Final Year Project

The document summarizes a student project on designing a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter for a grid-connected PV system. It introduces the group members and supervisor and discusses the rising demand for renewable energy sources. It also presents the objectives to use pulse width modulation and fewer switches to reduce harmonics and increase reliability for the PV inverter design. A literature review compares different multilevel inverter topologies and modulation techniques. The project timeline and methodology are outlined along with references.

Introduction

◉ Ever rising demand for electrical energy and depleting fossil fuel reserves
are compelling reasons to use existing resources more efficiently.

◉ New highly efficient power electronic technologies and power control

strategies are therefore needed to reduce energy waste.

◉ Different inverter topology therefore introduced to increase the efficiency

of PV systems.

4
Introduction

◉ Cascaded H-bridge inverter is the most attractive topology because of its

modularity, simple physical layout smaller no of component and higher
reliability.

◉ In addition the necessity of isolated dc sources makes this topology an

ideal candidate for PV application.

5
Problem statements

◉ Due to the existence of harmonics, the output of the inverter is usually not
an ideal sine wave.[3]

◉ As the number of switches increase , the THD in the output will decrease,
but the reliability will also decreases.[1]

6
Objectives

◉ We will try to use the pulse width modulation techniques and less
number of switches to reduce harmonics and increase reliability.
