SK1-BRK-01-Brake System Bleeding-Rev 1.0

This document provides instructions for bleeding brake fluid from a vehicle's brake system. It explains that air in the hydraulic system can cause soft or spongy braking. The bleeding process removes air by pumping fresh brake fluid into the lines while opening each caliper bleed screw one at a time. Precautions include using the proper fluid, cleaning parts, and bleeding in the specified order. The sequence diagram shows a typical non-ABS brake system bleeding order.

Brake System Bleeding

LEVEL – 1 1
SK1-BRK-01 Brake System Bleeding

o Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid used in hydraulic brake and hydraulic clutch
applications in automobiles.

o The process of releasing the air from Hydraulic system is called as “Bleeding ”

o Bleeding is required when system components (viz. TMC / Brake Pipe / Reservoir)
are removed or replaced

o Air in system will affect brake effectiveness ( Pedal Spongy)

o Low fluid level in the System results in air entry

o Fluid’s Hygroscopic Nature absorbs Moisture from Air

SK1-BRK-01 Precautions – Do’s & Don'ts

Do’s:

 Clean the outer surface of the container thoroughly
before opening the Brake fluid reservoir cap.
 Use recommended fluid
 Use same grade fluid for top up
 Once Brake bleeding done. Confirm reservoir cap & bleed Nipple is tightened properly
 Ensure NO CONTACT with mineral oil based components (Oil ,grease ,fluid)
Don’t's:
×
 Do not top up from used and unsealed brake fluid container (Moisture content may cause
damage to the system)
 Do not mix different Grades
 Do not open Brake fluid reservoir cap / container with dirty hands. (Brake fluid will get
contaminated)
 Don’t spray water directly on reservoir while washing engine compartment. (Due to high
pressure chance for water mixing with fluid)
 Brake fluid is erosive in nature, in case of spillage on painted surface wipe out properly.

 Fill the brake fluid reservoir to the MAX mark.
Connect the bleed tube to the calliper bleed screw and place other end submerged in a
transparent container containing sufficient brake fluid.
Depress the brake foot pedal and hold it down.
Open the bleed screw [A]. The fluid will flow into the transparent container [B].

CAUTION:
Ensure there is No Air Lock by using transparent container and transparent bleeding
tube submerged in Brake oil 5

 Tighten the bleed screw and release the pedal.

 After the pedal returns, allow an interval of 3 to 4 seconds before making the next
stroke.

 Bleeding should be repeated until there are no more air bubbles observed in the
bleed tube.

 Once Bleeding done remove the bleeding tube and place the dust cap on the bleed
screw and the tighten to the specific torque.

 Once Bleeding completed. Confirm Brake fluid reservoir cap tightened properly

CAUTION:
 A small drop in brake fluid level can be "topped up" but if the level consistently drops
cause should be investigated and rectified.
 Brake fluid is toxic, combustible and erosive. 6

Note –
• Incase of ABS vehicles manual bleeding to be followed by diagnostic tool bleeding if
applicable . 7
