Load Testing

This document provides guidelines for load testing various types of lifeboats, davits, and launching appliances. It outlines the following tests that should be performed: 1. Various static and dynamic load tests ranging from 1.1 to 2.2 times the rated working load to test the strength of davits, winches, and other components. These include on-load hook release tests, static load tests, and dynamic load tests with loaded lifeboats or water bags. 2. Recovery tests to demonstrate the davit system can retrieve the empty or partially loaded lifeboat. 3. Requirements that the components hold the overload weights without deformation and that the brakes do not slip during lowering tests.

Commissioning & Load Testing

LSA CODE 2010

LSA CODE 2010
MSC1 Cir 1206 rev1 Measure to Prevent Accidents with LB
Working Load & Safe Working Load

Working Load
It is the load that is defined by manufacturer’s, can also be name as equivalent load
which an item of lifting equipment may raise, lower or suspend under particular service
condition. In most cases we get this value from the lifeboat nameplate.
Performing Load Testing is a dangerous operation. Please
consider all the risk & hazard. Please refer to the
commissioning manual & checklist for your reference.
Conventional LB & Davit Load Testing

1.1X On load Hook Release Test

1.5X Static Load Test or

1.1X Dynamic Load Test

2.2X Static Load Test

Freefall Davits Load Testing Using Waterbags
Freefall Lifeboat Load Testing
FRC/RB & Davit Load Testing
2.2X Static Load Test
for davit Structure

Formula:
a) 2.2X WL (Max weight of the boat @ its
nameplate) or
b) 2.2X Davit SWL

Procedure:
c) Once the calculated load is achieved,
it will be suspended on the davit head & hold
for at least 5 minutes.
b) For a two falls davit, the load will be
equally distributed to each davit head.

Acceptance Criteria:
The davit should hold the load and there
should be no deformation and bending of its
structure. Welding should demonstrate no
cracks.
1.5X Static Load Test for the winck brake
1.5X Static Load Test

Formula:
a) 1.5X WL (Max weight of the boat @ its
nameplate) or
b) 1.5X Winch SWL

Procedure:
c) Once the calculated load is achieved,
it will be suspended on the fall wire
with its master link for at least 5
minutes.
b) For a two falls davit, the load will be
equally distributed to each falls
master link or suspension link.

Acceptance Criteria:
There should be no observed slippage
on the winch holding brake.
1.1X Dynamic Load Test

Formula:
a) 1.1 X WL (Max weight of the boat @ its
nameplate)

Procedure:
a) Load bags or the lifeboat itself
b) Once the calculated load is defined,
and or placed inside the lifeboat in
balanced and secured manner.
c) The loaded boat or bags will then lowered
at its winch maximum speed then the
brake is applied. Performed this steps at
least 3X.
d) Lowering speed will be measured.

Acceptance Criteria:
There should be no observed slippage of more than 1
meter after the brake is applied. Structures & welding
joints should also be check.
Recovery Test

Formula:
a) Weight of empty boat + 3 person equivalent
Weight of empty boat + 6 person equivalent
(if the LB is use as rescueboat)

Procedure:
a) Lift up the boat until limit switch activates.
b) Measure the hoisting speed
C) Measure the motor current and voltages

Acceptance Criteria:
It should be demonstrated that the launching
appliance can retrieve the boat.

The limit switch should trigger.

Hoisting speed should be acceptable.

1.1X On Load Release Test

Formula:
a) 1.1 X WL (Max weight of the boat @ its
nameplate)

Procedure:
a) Test kit or loaded boat can be use.
b) If using the boat, the boat is lowered until
its keel slightly touch the water line (others
prefer 1 meter above the waterline).
c) The hook is then release at this height.
d) If test kit is use, then do the test according
to the procedure.

Acceptance Criteria:
It should demonstrate that the hook simultaneously
open during the release and no observed damage
on the hook after testing. The hooks can be reset.
