Plane Sailing

1. This document provides formulas and instructions for terrestrial plane sailing navigation. It includes formulas to calculate course, distance, departure, and difference of latitude based on two known points. 2. It explains how to name courses according to the quadrant of difference of latitude and departure, and provides examples of using the formulas to calculate course, distance, departure and difference of latitude given values for two points. 3. Rectangular and polar coordinate systems are also explained as ways to represent the relationship between difference of latitude, departure and course/distance.

Formula:

1. Sin Course = Departure / Distance

2. Cos Course = Difference of latitude / Distance
3. Tan Course = Departure / Difference of latitude
4. Distanace = Difference of latitude / Cos Course
5. Difference of latitude = Distance x Cos Course
6. Departure = Distance x Sin Course

Example 1:
Find the course and Distance if the Departure is 46 nautical miles East and
Difference of Latitude 128 nautical miles North.
Solution:
Tan Co. = Dep / Dlat 46 nm Wpt 2
= 46 nm / 128 nm
= 0.359375
Co. = N19.7E or 020°T

Dist = Dlat / Cos Co. 128 nm

= 128 nm / Cos 19.7 Co.
Dist = 135.9 nm

Example 2:
A vessel deapart from Latitude 10°20.0' N, Longitude 060°20' E, heading
155°T with a distance of 300 nm. Find the Dlat and Latitude of Arrival?
Solution:
Dlat = Dist x Cos Co. 155°
= 300 nm x Cos 25° 180 -
= 271.9 / 60 S025E
Dlat = 4°31.9' S

Dep Lat = 10°20.0' N 300 nm

271.9 nm 155°
Dlat = 4°31.9' S (-)
Arr Lat = 5°48.1' N

Dep = Dist x Sin Co 123.2 nm

= 135.9 x Cos 25°
Dep = 123.2 nm
