Duhok Polytechnic University: Global Position System (GPS)

The document discusses different coordinate systems used in GPS, including geographic coordinate systems which use latitude and longitude, and Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) systems which divide the earth into 60 vertical zones and 20 horizontal sections. It provides examples of UTM zone 38S coordinates for locations in Kurdistan like Dohuk, Akra, and Erbil.

Coordinate systems
A coordinate system is a grid used to identify points on a page or screen.
There are two commonly used of coordinate system:
1. Geographic coordinate system (GCS):
Is a coordinate system that enables every location on the Earth to be
specified by a set of numbers, letters or symbols.
• uses measures of latitude and longitude to determine your location.
• the prime meridian(‫لقطبين‬..‫ينا‬..‫لطوليب‬..‫لخط ا‬..‫ )ا‬can be found at zero degree
longitude and the Equator(‫الستواء‬..‫ط ا‬.‫ )خ‬can be found at zero degree
latitude.

• Lines of latitude run north and south with positive numbers
representing the northern hemisphere, negative numbers
representing the southern hemisphere.
• Lines of longitude run east and west, with positive numbers
representing the eastern hemisphere, negative numbers representing
the western hemisphere, and the prime meridian representing 0o
longitude.
• Units for the geographic coordinate system are represented in
Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds; 1 Degree=60 nautical miles (69.09
miles); 1 Minute=1 nautical mile; 1 Second=100.8 feet.

2. Universal Tranverse Mercator (UTM)
This system divides the Earth into 60 zones vertically and 20 sections
horizontally.
• There are 60 UTM horizontal zones that are each 6 degrees in width
Zone 1 extends from 180° W to 174° W and is centered on 177° W.
• There are 20 zone bands that are each 8 degrees tall,
these bands are lettered, south to north, beginning at 80° S
with the letter C and ending with the letter X at 84° N.
• The letters I and O are skipped to avoid confusion
with the numbers one and zero.
• The band lettered X spans 12° of latitude.

• Units for the UTM coordinate system are meters of easting

and northings.
