Photoshop:

Photoshop is a product of adobe company and has been an useful

tool for graphic designers to create artwork conveniently and to
enhance the quality of images.

Photoshop files extension .PSD, which stands for "Photoshop

Document.“ A PSD file stores an image with support for most imaging
options available in Photoshop. These include layers with masks,
color spaces, ICC profiles, CMYK Mode, transparency, text, alpha
channels and spot colors, clipping paths, and duotone settings.
Pixels : Are the main building block behind an image and
are responsible for color in image more the number of
pixels more better will be the quality.

Type of image
We have two type of images
1. Raster/Bitmap
2. Vector
1. Raster/Bitmap: Raster file are those file which are
made up of pixel by pixel information and quality is
high but disadvantage of these type of file is that the
quality of the file get distorted when we zoom the
image.

2.Vector: Vector file are those file which are made up of

mathematical information and quality is low but
advantage of these type of file is that the quality of the
file doesn’t get distorted when we zoom the image.
e.g. A+B=C
Raster/Bitmap: (1000%) Vector: (1000%)
What can be Done in

PhotoShop- CS5
What can be done in Photoshop

Content-awareness is a useful aspect of Photoshop

where image editing is done automatically and
intelligently. It comes in two forms which are content-
aware scaling and content-aware filling, in which
elements in a background automatically recompose
according to the areas
Healing tool
With improvement retouching tools like the Clone Stamp
tool and Healing Brush tool, imperfections of an image
can easily be removed..

Puppet wrap tool reveals Photoshop’s intelligence by

allowing a user to reposition an object with the help of
anchor points in an image such as a flower or arm.
Video editing is comprehensive and efficient with a broad
compatibility of video file formats such as MOV, AVI,
FLC, MPEG-4, and FLV formats and easy workflow.

3D -With the Extended version of Photoshop CS5, 2D

elements of an artwork can easily become three-
dimensional with the click of a button. Extrusions of texts,
wrapping two-dimensional images around 3D geometry
are all possible with this version of Photoshop.
Mobile integration
Third-party plug-in have also been added to the most recent
version of Photoshop where technologies such as the Apple iPad
have integrated the software with different types of applications.

Camera Raw plug-in, RAW images can be processed

without the use of Adobe Light room, along with other
image file formats such as JPEGs, TIFFs, or PNGs.
Move tool:
You can use the Move tool to copy selections as you drag them
within or between images, or you can copy and move selections.
Rectangular Marquee Tool :
You simply click with your mouse at the point where you want to
begin the selection, which will usually be in the top left corner of
the object or area you need to select, then continue holding your
mouse button down as you drag towards the bottom right corner
of the object or area. When you release your mouse button, the
selection is complete!
Elliptical Marquee Tool
The only real difference is that the Elliptical Marquee tool
allows us to draw oval or circular selections! If you
already know how to use the Rectangular Marquee Tool

Crop tool
The Crop tool allows you to select an area of an image
and discard everything outside this area.
Color mode
RGB Color mode: Photoshop RGB Color mode uses the RGB
model. In 8‑bits-per-channel images, the intensity values range
from 0 (black) to 255 (white) for each of the RGB (red, green,
blue) components in a color image. Color mode is supported by
monitor

CMYK Color mode : In the CMYK mode, each pixel is assigned a

percentage value for each of the process inks. The lightest
(highlight) colors are assigned small percentages of process ink
colors; the darker (shadow) colors higher percentages. Color
mode is used by printer for printing image

Gray scale mode: Gray scale mode uses different shades of gray
in an image. In 8‑bit images, there can be up to 256 shades of
gray. Every pixel of a gray scale image has a brightness value
ranging from 0 (black) to 255 (white).
Bitmap mode: Bitmap mode uses one of two color
values (black or white) to represent the pixels in an
image. Images in Bitmap mode are called bitmapped
1‑bit images because they have a bit depth of 1.

Duotone mode: Duotone mode creates monotone,

duotone (two-color), tritone (three-color), and quadtone
(four-color) grayscale images using one to four custom
inks.
Image File Formats
JPEG stands for "Joint Photographic Expert Group" and,
as its name suggests, was specifically developed for
storing photographic images. JPEG files are significantly
smaller than those saved as TIFF. A great thing about
JPEG files is their flexibility.

Image with Fine Detail Image without Fine Detail

(Less Effective JPEG Compression) (More Effective JPEG Compression)
GIF: (Graphic Interchange Format) works best for
images with only a few distinct colors, such as line
drawings and simple cartoons. GIF is useful for cartoon
images that have less then 256-(28) colors, grayscale
images, and black and white text. GIF, is a standard
format for Web images.
TIFF :(Tagged Image File Format) has emerged as the
standard archiving image file format for library use. Its
strengths are that the format is extensible -- new image
types can be introduced without invalidating older types
—and portable --
(PNG): The Portable Network Graphics format was
designed to replace the older and simpler GIF format
PNG's compression is fully lossless--and since it
supports up to 48-bit true color or 16-bit grayscale--
saving, restoring and re-saving an image will not
degrade its quality, unlike standard JPEG

Magic Wand:
Photoshop's Magic Wand selects pixels based on tone and color.
When we click on an area in the image with the tool, Photoshop
looks at the tone and color of the area we clicked on and selects
pixels that share the same color and brightness values. This
makes the Magic Wand exceptional at selecting large areas of
solid color.

Tolerance:
The Tolerance option tells Photoshop how different in tone and
color a pixel can be from the area we clicked on for it to be
included in the selection. By default, the Tolerance value is set to
32, which means that Photoshop will select any pixels that are the
same color as the area we clicked on, plus any pixels that are up
to 32 shades darker or 32 shades brighter. Contains a total of 256
brightness levels between (and including) pure black and pure
white
Layers: are like sheets of stacked acetate. You can
see through transparent areas of a layer to the layers
below. You use layers to perform tasks such as
compositing multiple images, adding text to an
image, or adding vector graphic shapes. You can
apply a layer style to add a special effect such as a
drop shadow or a glow.
Duplicate a layer or group within an image
Do one of the following:
•Drag the layer or group to the Create a New Layer
button .
•Choose Duplicate Layer or Duplicate Group from the
Layers menu or the Layers panel menu.
•Enter a name for the layer or group, and click OK.

Hiding a layer : Click the eye icon next to a layer,

group, or layer effect to hide its content in the document
window. Click in the column again to redisplay the
content. To view the eye icon for styles and effects, click
the Reveal Effects In panel icon . Choose Show Layers
or Hide Layers from the Layers menu.
Photoshop Clone Stamp Tool
Photoshop's clone stamp tool allows you to duplicate part of an image.
The process involves setting a sampling point in the image which
will be used as a reference to create a new cloned area.
Select the Clone Stamp tool , then check the settings in the
options bar. Make sure you have a brush size appropriate for the
job. The following settings are fairly typical:

Notes:
1.Aligned: If this option is selected, the new cloned image will be
drawn continuously even if you release the mouse button while
drawing. If it is deselected, the clone will begin drawing from the
sampling point each time you release the mouse and resume
painting.
2.Use All Layers: If this option is selected, information will be used
from all visible layers. Otherwise only the active layer will be used.
Example
• The original image.

• Hold down the Alt key — the

cursor will change to a target.
Click the point you wish to use
as a sampling point. This will be
used as the reference point for
cloning.

• Click and draw where you want

the cloned image to appear. As
you draw, a cross will appear on
the original image while a
corresponding circle appears
where you are drawing.
Using the Pattern Stamp Tool
This creative tool allows you to paint on an image using
pre-defined patterns. You can use the patterns that are
already in the Photoshop pattern libraries or you can
create your own patterns, like the yellow rose in this
tutorial. When you click on the Pattern Stamp tool from
the Photoshop toolbar, the options for the tool will show
across the top of the screen. The options bar allows you
to change the brush and brush size. You’ll then pick the
rose pattern created earlier in the technique, select a
layer and start painting.
Pattern Stamp Tool
The Brush tool: is a basic painting tool. It works like a
traditional drawing tool by applying the color using
strokes. It’s located in the standard Tool Bar and its
default shortcut is the letter B.

The Brush Tool works by adding a shaped mark on a

layer, and if you continue pressing the mouse button or
the pen on a tablet. Brush Tip Shape, Blending Mode,
Opacity and Flow. Photoshop includes several built-in
presets, that are in fact pre-made brushes ready to use.
The Brush tool
Healing Brush tool
The Healing Brush tool lets you correct imperfections,
causing them to disappear into the surrounding image.
Like the cloning tools, you use the Healing Brush tool to
paint with sampled pixels from an image or pattern.
However, the Healing Brush tool also matches the
texture, lighting, transparency, and shading of the
sampled pixels to the pixels being healed. As a result,
the repaired pixels blend seamlessly into the rest of the
image.
(Photoshop Extended) The Healing Brush tool can be
applied to video or animation frames.
Gradient Tool (G)

The Gradient tool creates a gradual blend

between multiple colors. Gradients are applied by
dragging the tool across the image. The starting
point is defined by where the mouse is initially
clicked and the ending point is where the mouse
is released.
Gradients can be applied to the whole active
layer or just select portions of an active layer.

Gradient presets (Type)

•Linear gradient – Shades from the start point to

the end point in a straight line.
• Radial gradient – Shades from the start point to
the end point in a circular pattern.
• Angle gradient – Shades in a counterclockwise
sweep around the start point.
• Reflective gradient – Shades using symmetric
linear gradients on either side of the start point.
• Diamond gradient – Shades from the start point
outward in a diamond pattern. The end point
defines one corner of the diamond.

Text Tool
To add words in your image, click and drag until the type
box is the desired size. You can always change the size
of the type box by clicking on the squares that surround
the type box and moving them out words (increases the
size of the box) or move them in words (decreases the
size of the box).

The Blur Tool
The Blur Tool allows you to make certain areas of the image
as if the image was filmed with a camera out of focus.
•In the Toolbox, select the Blur
•Choose brush size and style.
•Set the tool's strength.
•Drag on the image.
•In the Options bar, you can also specify the effect's "Mode".

Before Blur Tool After Blur Tool

The Sharpen Tool
It sharpen by sampling the specific color and
indirectly making it thicker and most of the time
darker. You should use this tool to only sharpen
small areas (not the whole image).
Smudge Tool :
If you painted a line on the wall with the brush and the
paint was still wet and then you used a different brush
and used a different color and painted over the first color
Burn Tool
The Burn tool darkens image areas:
•In the Toolbox, select the Burn tool.
•Choose brush size and hardness.
•Set exposure (stroke strength).
•Drag on the image.
•on the Options bar you can choose also the tool's range:
Shadows, Midtones or Highlights.
Dodge Tool
The Dodge tool lightens image areas:
•In the Toolbox, select the Dodge tool.
•Choose brush size and hardness.
•Set exposure (stroke strength).
•Drag on the image.
•In the Options bar,
•you can choose also the tool's range:
•Shadows, Midtones or Highlights.
The Sponge
Tool saturates / desaturates image areas:
•In the Toolbox, select the Sponge tool.
•Choose brush size and style*.
•Select mode (what do you want - saturate or desaturate).
•Set the tool's Flow (tool's strength).
•Drag on the image.
A layer mask is added to a layer to reveal or hide an
entire layer or certain portions of a layer. To hide a layer,
a layer mask makes pixels transparent temporarily,
which can be retrieved any time in future.
FILTERS:
Are predefined effects, which allows you to
achieve the desired output by Customizing
parameters of a particular filters. Filters are
used to change the look of the image by giving
them the different appearance with the help of
filters in Photoshop.
FILTERS:(Blur Filter)

MotionBlur:
The effect is analogous to taking picture of
a moving object with fixed exposure time.
Values adjustment 1)Direction 2)Intensity.

GaussianBlur:
It adds low frequency details and can
produce a hazy effects. It refers to bell-
shaped curves. Values adjustment
1)Radius

FILTERS:
Box Blur:
Blurs an image based on the average color value
of neighboring pixels. This filter is useful for
creating special effects. You can adjust the size of
the area used to calculate the average value for a
given pixel; a larger radius results in greater
blurring.
Radial Blur:
Simulates the blur of a zooming or rotating camera
to produce a soft blur. Choose Spin to blur along
concentric circular lines, and then specify a degree
of rotation.

Colored Pencil (Artistic Filter)
This filter imitates drawing with a color pencil on paper
of a current background color. The homogeneous
areas are hatched with diagonal strokes. The areas
with a high color contrast are sharply outlined.

Pencil Width - controls the thickness of a virtual

pencil. This setting can fall within the range of 1 to 24.
Stroke Pressure - imitates the pressure upon a pencil
while drawing. The bigger the pressure, the better the
initial colors .
Paper Brightness - reflects the brightness of the
paper background color. The paper is black with 0
brightness and maximally bright with 50%.
Film Grain
This filter adds grainy pattern to the shady and medium
tones of the image. The lighter areas are made even
lighter, richer, and more glossy. This filter can be used
to reduce the sharp lines in gradient transitions. Having
selected Filter>Artistic>Film Grain, you'll see the
following settings:
Grain - this setting controls the size of grains in the
image.
Highlight Area - increasing this setting makes a large
part of the image lighter.
Intensity - this parameter controls the brightness of the
lighter areas.
Fresco
This filter imitates drawing with large round strokes. It
circles the same tone areas with dark colors, at the
same time increasing the richness and the contrast of
the image. Choose Filter>Artistic>Fresco and you'll see
the following settings:
Brush size - the larger the brush, the broader and
more transparent the strokes. This is achieved by
making the image more blurry. With smaller brushes,
the image looks like an oil canvas, with bigger ones, it
resembles a watercolor.
Brush Detail - the larger this parameter, the more
precise the details will be. If the brush size is increased,
this setting should be increased as well.
Texture - this setting adds texture, which creates an
impression of a rough canvas or paper.
