Introductio
n
🠶 Transparent concrete or light-transmitting
c o n c re te or tra nsluc e nt c o n c re te is a sm a rt
construction material that allows pass light
through it fro m o n e sid e to a nothe r sid e .
🠶 D u e to some amount of coarse
a g g re g a t e content of concrete is
replace with light- transmitting material or
optical fibers. In this c o n c re te , the hig h
a m o u nt of fine a g g re g a te is use d or fine
m a te ria l is use d .
🠶 Transparent concrete is used to provide a
better aesthetic view of a building or other
architectural purposes.
Histor

🠶 The Transparent Concrete C o n c e p t Is First
Found In 1935 by C a n a d i a n patent. But
d u e to the development of optical fiber

m ore p o p ula r.
🠶 But after some time this c o n c e p t also
c o m e s a n d in 2001 the idea of
transparent concrete is fo u nd b y
Hung a ria n a rc hite c t a ro n loso n c zi. In
2004, he started the g e rma n company,
n a m e d LiTraCon, a n d started
producing LiTraCon commercially.
How is it
Made
🠶 Mostly the same as regular concrete
🠶 Glass fibers are spread throughout the
aggregate and
cement mix.
🠶 Small layers of the concrete are poured on top
of each
other and infused with the fibers and are then
connected
🠶 Process is tedious and costly
🠶 Big reason why this product costs so
much.
What are its
Properties

🠶 Carries the same amount of light

through a brick no matter how thick
it is
🠶 The light carried maintains its original
color
🠶 Weighs about the same as conventional
concrete
🠶 96% traditional aggregate and cement, 4%
glass fibers
🠶 Can be manufactured in any color
upon request
🠶 Normally sold in bricks
Why does it
Work

🠶 Based on Nano-Optics
🠶 Light passes as much light when tiny slits are
placed directly on top of each other as when
they are staggered
🠶 Principal can carry because glass fibers in the
concrete
act like the slits and carry the light across
Is it
Expensive

🠶Currently more
expensive
🠶Due to:manufacturing process
• tedious
• only made in a small factory in Hungary run by inventor
Aron Losonsczi
🠶Possible production tradeoff to
United States or Japan
🠶Maybe less expensive in future
Is it Worth
it
🠶 Depends on the buyer and the
project
🠶 Adds an interesting property to a
strong material
🠶 Could take fiber optics in a new
direction
🠶 Definitely looks cool nonetheless
Application
:-
🠶 For decorative elevation.
🠶 Illum ina te wa ll.
🠶 G e t c re a tiv e with a d e sig n.
🠶 Use in a p a v ement or load-bearing
walls.
🠶 Increase visibility in a dark subway
station.
🠶 Light fixture.
🠶 Use as transparent a n d decorative
floors.
🠶 Light sidewalk at night.

Failures of transparent concrete;
* Transparent concrete can develop cracks over time, just like
regular concrete. These cracks can compromise its structural
integrity and reduce its transparency.

* Transparent concrete's ability to transmit light can diminish over

time due to environmental factors, such as dust and dirt buildup on
its surface. Cleaning and maintenance are essential to maintain its
transparency.

* Transparent concrete is generally less strong than traditional

concrete. This limitation can affect its use in load-bearing
applications or in places where structural strength is essential.
