Unit 1

Photosynthesis & the carbon cycle

1.1 Photosynthesis
Getting started
Learners book page 2
The plant that
has light :
• Is taller.
• Is greener.
• Has a thicker stem
• Has broader and more
numerous number of leaves.

Plant make there own food by photosynthesis and cannot make it without light
(in dark), so they don’t have enough food to be able to grow well.
Chlorophyll is what makes plants look green and this is used to absorb energy
from light. Without light, the plant doesnot make chlorophyll.
What is the process
in which the plant makes
their own food?
Plants make food by

Photosynthesis
.
Photo means “light” and synthesis means “making”.
So photosynthesis means “making with light”.
What do th plant
use in
photosynthesis?
• In photosynthesis plant use:
Water from the soil.
Carbon dioxide from air.
Energy from Sunlight.
What part of the
Plant responsible for
Absorbtion of the light?
The energy of the Sunlight is absorber by green pigment called

Chlorophyll
Which are inside the leaves of the plants.
So, Photosynthesis happens in the leaves of the plant.
What do we need
energy in
photosynthesis?
Energy is used to make the water and carbon
dioxide combine together in a chemical reaction.
Equation for photosynthesis:
Questions:

1- What are the reactants in

photosynthesis?
2- What are he products in photosynthesis?
Collecting the gas produced in
photosynthesis experiment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC49fbTCCDc

By the end of the video, you need to answer the following questions:
1- why it is the best to use water plant in this experiment?
2- Why it is important to leave the apparatus where it would get plenty of Sunlight?
Answers:
1- So, that the gas could be collected over water.
2- So, that the water plant could get energy from photosynthesis.
The effect of the light intensity
on the rate of chemical reaction
experiment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmwOFn67Jqg
Light intensity is the amount of light. So, the bigger the distance of the lamp from the test tube, the lower
the light intensity.
Dependent variable: no. of bubbles

Independent variable: distance between the lamp and the plant.

Control variables: same type of plant
same type of water
same amount of water
same source of light
How to calculate the mean?
• In case you have more than one trial (two or more trial), a mean
(average should be calculated)
• Plot the mean points on the graph as small, neat crosses.
As the light intensity increase, the rate of
photosynthesis increases
& vice versa
What are the similarities between
respiration and photosynthesis?
Both;
• Both are chemical reaction.
• Both happen inside the cells.
• Both involve energy change (energy transfer).
• Both involve: glucose, oxygen, carbon dioxide & water.
Point of comparison Respiration Photosynthesis
Occurrence Happens in all living cells Only happens in some plant cells
Location Happens in cytoplasm & mitochondria Happens in chloroplast
Need sunlight No yes
Energy conversion Chemical energy in glucose is released Light energy (from the Sun) transferred
for the cell to use into chemical energy (found in
glucose)
The reactant of respiration are
the product of photosynthesis
The majority of plants do photosynthesis but
very few don’t as they don’t contain
chlorophyll & they depend on other host to
get its own food like ghost pipe & American
cancer root.
What is the importance
of photosynthesis?
Importance of photosynthesis:
1- It provides energy which is chemical
energy in nutrients.
Plants use the energy in Sunlight to make glucose. These carbohydrates
contain some of the energy that was originally in the Sunlight. When
the animals eat the food, they get the energy from the plants
2- It provides oxygen for the
Earth atmosphere.
• Oxygen is a waste product of photosynthesis.
• It released from the leaf of the plant and mixes with other gases in
the atmosphere.
• About 20% of the air around us is oxygen.
• All animals and plants need oxygen for respiration.
Was the oxygen gas
presnet when the
Earth was first formed ?
No, it was not present
• When the Earth was first formed, about 4.6 billion years ago, there
was almost no oxygen in the Earth atmosphere.
• Scientists think that oxygen first began to collect in the air when
bacteria first began to photosynthesize as there were no plants at
that time “they don’t appear on Earth until about 4.7 million years
ago.
What happens if photosynthesis has
not ever begun on Earth?
No animals would ever has been able to live on Earth.
The picture shows a lizard
eating grasshopper.
Grasshopper eat grass.
• Explain how lizard relies on photosynthesis to provide it with energy.
• Explain one other reason (apart from food) why the lizard would not
be able to survive if there were no plants on Earth.
• 3 Photosynthesis transfers energy from sunlight into
chemical energy in glucose. The plant can use the
glucose to make other substances. When the
grasshopper eats grass, it takes in some of this
energy. The lizard gets some of the energy when it
eats the grasshopper.

• 4 Plants release oxygen into the air when they

photosynthesise. Animals such as lizards need
oxygen for respiration.
