ENERGY CONSERVATION

MEASURES

General Services
Traction
Rolling Stock
General Services
1.Switching ‘off’ of light & fans whenever not
required by centralized ‘OFF CONTROL’.
2.Use of Electronic Ballast.
3.Provision of CFL fittings by replacing
incandescent lamps & FL tubes.
4.Utilization of Non conventional sources of
energy i.e. Solar water heaters, Solar
distilled water plants, Photo voltaic cells
etc.
5.Installing correct capacity pumps after in-
depth analysis of water requirements &
yield of source.
6.Long length of pipe line should be
avoided & it should be free from
roughness on the inside surface of the
pipe in order to reduce fractional losses.
7.No of fittings such as bends, valves,
elbows etc should be kept to bare
minimum to reduce frictional losses. Low
resistance foot valve should be used.
8.Leakages in pipes should be arrested.
9.Working hours of the pump should be
reviewed and regulated by installing
timer i. e. Atomization of pumps
10.In workshops correct capacity of
compressors should be installed and leakage
from air pipe line from compressor should be
arrested.

11.Capacitors are provided in the control circuit

panel of pumps to improve power factor.

12.Adoption 70 - 30% lighting system on

Railway Platforms.

13.Use of Time Switches in yard lighting, FL

masts etc.
TRACTION
1.Shunt capacitors bank shall be provided to
reduce maximum demand & line losses.
2.Stand by traction X’MER should be kept
de-energized to reduce no load losses.
3.Demand monitoring equipment (M.D.
buzzer) shall be kept in working condition.
4.Simultaneous starting of trains should be
avoided. Bunching of trains in the event of
breakdown should be avoided.
5.Greasing of the track to reduce adhesive,
thereby reducing tractive effort required.
ROLLING STOCK
1.Introduction of 3 phase Electric loco drive
having excellent regenerative braking
characteristics.
2.Coaching of trains on down gradient to the
maximum extent possible, for which
coasting boards are provided at suitable
locations.
3.The loco pilot of goods train should ensure
that whenever a hault enroute is likely to
be more than 01 hour, the loco should be
de-energized.
4.The blowers should be switched ‘off’ in
case of hault exceeding 10 minutes.
5.While entering the area of speed
restriction, loco pilot should apply
the brake in such a way that the
speed does not fall below the
restricted speed advised.
6.Ordering of the goods train if clear
path is available so, that frequent
stop/start of the goods train avoided.
7.Switching off the DJ of the loco in the
yard if the loco is waiting for load or
crew.
