MODULE 6

THE POWERS OF
THE MIND
WHAT IS BRAIN?
The brain is an organ that is made up of a large mass of
nerve tissue protected within the skull. It plays a role in
just about every major body system. Some of its main
functions include processing sensory information,
regulating blood pressure and breathing and releasing
hormones.
The Four Lobes of the Brain
1. FRONTAL LOBE
• The largest section of the brain located in the front of
the head, the frontal lobe is involved in personality
characteristics and movement. Recognition of smell
usually involves parts of the frontal lobe.
• Personality, behavior, emotions
• Judgment, planning, problem-solving
• Speech: speaking and writing
• Body movement
• Intelligence, concentration , and self-awareness
2. PARIETAL LOBE
•The middle part of the
brain, the parietal lobe
helps a people what they
see and feel.
•The parietal lobe is also
involved in interpreting
pain in touch in the body.
•Interprets language, words
•Sense of touch, pain,
temperature
3. OCCIPITAL LOBE
•The occipital lobe is the back
part of the brain that is
involved with vision.
•Interprets vision (color, light,
movement)
4. TEMPORAL LOBE
• The sides of the brain, these temporal lobes
are involved in short-term memory, speech,
musical rhythm, and some degree of smell
recognition.
• Understanding language, hearing,
sequencing and organization
•Neurons are nerve cells that send
messages all over your body to
allow you to do everything from
breathing, talking, eating, walking,
and thinking.
Three parts of Neuron
1. Nerve cell body- also called Soma is the
spherical part of the neuron that contains
the nucleus.
2. Dendrites- is where a neuron receives input
from other cells.
3. Axon- which send information to the
neuron.
DRUG DAMAGE
• INHALANTS
Such as glue, paint, gasoline and aerosols, destroy
the outer lining of nerve cells and make them
unable to communicate with one another. In
1993, more than 60 young people died from
sniffing inhalants, according to national Families
in Action, a drug education center based in
Atlanta.
MARIJUANA hinders
memory, learning, judgement
and reaction times.
STEROIDS cause aggression
and violent mood swings.
•ECSTACY destroys neuron
that makes serotonin- a
chemical crucial in controlling
sleep, violence, mood swings
and sexual urges.
THE DOMINANT SIDE OF THE
BRAIN
• Researchers believed that brain dominance
determines a person’s preferences, problem-
solving style, personality characteristics, and
even choices. For example, a right –brain
individual will quickly get a feeling for a
situation, while a left-brain person will
usually ask a lot of questions first.
•LEFT BRAIN-these people are:
Classical Music
Being on time
Careful Planning
Being thoughtful
Scrabble, Chess
Organized
 Logical
 Detail- oriented
 Planning
 Math, Science, Logic
 etc.
• RIGHT BRAIN- these people are
Being active
Athletics, art, or music
Popular music
A good time
To go with the first idea
Intuitive
Risk- takers
Creative
Adventurous
Creative writing
Art
Imagination
Etc.
ACTIVITY 4
• WRITE YOUR ANSWER IN ONE (1) WHOLE SHEET
OF PAPER
1. To enrich you more about the topic discussed,
cite at least five preferred activities for right-
and left-brained individuals.
2. What is mind map? Look for examples and cite
your source.
