What is Short transmission line?
A short transmission line is defined as a transmission
line with an effective length less than 80 km (50 miles),
or with a voltage less than 69 kV. Unlike medium
transmission lines and long transmission lines, the line
charging current is negligible, and hence the shunt
capacitance can be ignored.
Example :- Question: A 220-kV, 60Hz, three phase
transmission line is 40 km long. The resistance per
phase is 0.15 Q per km and the inductance per phase is
1.3263 mH per km. The shunt capacitance is negligible.
Use the short line model to find the voltage and power
at the sending end, the voltage regulation and efficiency
when the line is supplying a three-phase load of 381
Solution
:-
How to draw a short transmission line in
MATLAB simulation
ANS :- To draw a short transmission line
using Matlab can be explain as follows
1) On the Matlab ,click on the Simulink
icon to open it or start working on it
2) Now click on it
and go to the
Simulink library
And so the many
part of source
In matlab
3) Go to the Simscape or in some of the
software it is in the sources .
Simscape contain sources of
different components for
various component required .
4) Now in the simscape we can see
the different option for the for
building the model of the
transmission line
Now the question for the building the
short transmission line :-
1) From the simscape click on the power system (on the right side of
window)
Then click on
the specialized
technology and
then click on the
fundamental
block and in it
click on
Electrical
sources ,In the
electrical source
click on the
“THREE
PHASE
SOURCE”
Click on the specialized technology and then on the
fundamental tools .
Of matlab in so the main page .
Click on the electrical sources and select the THREE PHASE
SOURCES.
Move the source to the simuling and change the
parameter according to it .
Change the parameter

4) Here the display gives
three reading because
we have three phase vi

5) Now connect the active
,reactive and apparent
power component to
the RMS and RMS 1.
Search the powergui in the sources and select the following sources and connect it
accordingly.
1)Power (3ph intantaneous).
2)S-VI
3)S=3VI
4)QS and PS(Active and Reactive power)
Now copy slide 10 components and connect it to the three

Put according to the connection diagram.
1) Put the divide component
2) Gain 1
3) Subtract
4) Divide

Long transmission line
What is long transmission line?
In a long transmission line, the length of the line is more than 250 km and the
operational voltage of the line is very high, more than 133 kV. The
performance of such a line is calculated by considering that the line
constants (R, L & C) are uniformly distributed over the whole length of the
line
QUESTION:-
Q)A three phase, 60 Hz, 500 kV transmission line is 300 km long. The line inductance is 0.97 mH/km
per
phase and its capacitance is 0.0115 µF/km per phase.
Assume a lossless line.
1)The receiving end rated load is 800 MW, 0.8 power factor lagging at 500 kV.
2)Determine the Sending end voltage, current, active, reactive and apparent power.
3)Determine the percentage voltage regulation as well as efficiency of the transmission line.
Solution
Take the three phase source and change the parameter according to the question given
(phase to phase voltage :617.53e3,phase angle 16.1,frequency 60Hz)
Now , take the three phase vi measurement (from Electrical source option) and change the
parameter of the block .

Go to “Fundamental block” click on the ‘Elements’ and in it take the ‘Distributed

Take the ‘RMS (root mean square)’ and connect with ‘Three phase vi

RMS (root

• Fundamental frequency – 60Hz
• Initial RMS value – 0
• Sample time - 0
Connect the first ‘RMS’ to the voltage terminal of the three phase vi
measurement and second ‘RMS’ to the current terminal. And then connect
the display to the both the RMS Block in which one will give voltage and other
one will give current .
1)Take the
‘Power(three phase
instantaneous)’ block
and connect it with the
line of the ‘Three phase

and current line
respectively .

• Connect the divide block to the RMS1

• Now connect the subtract block to the
divide 2 block upper end and then
connect it the Gain2 block and then it to
the display which will provide voltage

Take the Gain 2 block and
change the parameter of
the block .
Gain=100
Now copy the whole system
and connect it the to the
second ‘Three phase VI

get transmission efficiency
Now here change the parameter of the
Constant block and then see the change in the
value in display .
Now you can run the simulation. Here the
simulation complete of the
‘long transmission line’.
