MODULE 1:
INTRODUCTION
TO
INFORMATION
AND
COMMUNICATIO
By Jericho G. Nagum
N TECHNOLOGY
OVERVIEW
Technology is evolving faster than ever, bringing
both opportunities and uncertainties. Throughout
history, people have always used technology for
communication, and as it advances, it reshapes
habits, work, and collaboration. While the future
remains uncertain, digital progress continues to drive
change across industries, creating both opportunities
and disruptions.
OBJECTIVES
• After successful completion of this module, the student
can be able to;
• Demonstrate a sense of readiness for the upcoming
semester;
• Identify their learning outcomes and expectations for the
course;
• Recognize their capacity to create new understandings
from reflecting on the course; Know the role and
importance of ICT.
LESSON 1:
INFORMATION
AND
COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY
IN YOUR OWN
UNDERSTANDING,
WHAT IS
INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGY (ICT)?
HISTORY OF
ICTand Communications
ICT (Information
Technology) refers to the infrastructure,
devices, networks, applications, and
systems that enable modern computing and
allow people and organizations to interact
digitally.
USES OF ICT IN
OUR DAILY
LIVES
COMMUNICATIO
QUESTIONS:
1. How do you use ICT in your daily life?
2. How do we use ICT to communicate with
others?
3. What ICT tool do we often use for online
shopping?
4. Which device is commonly used by students
for online learning?
5. How does ICT help us get the latest news
and information?
USES OF ICT IN DAILY
LIFE – COMMUNICATION
• Enables instant and affordable communication (chat,
email, social media, calls).
• Connects people worldwide, even across long
distances.
• Improves education: supports self-learning, problem-
solving, collaboration, and access to resources.
• Helps administrators and policy makers work efficiently
through data and expertise.
JOB
OPPORTUNITIES
• ICT improves workplace efficiency by automating
tasks, such as pharmacies using robots to pick
prescribed drugs. This allows employees to focus
on roles that need human intelligence, like
dispensing and checking medication. Today,
basic ICT skills are required for most jobs, and
finding employment is easier through online
platforms using smartphones or computers.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
EXAMPLE
• Customer Service Representative – Using
chatbots, emails, and online helpdesks to assist
customers.
• Data Analyst – Analyzing data using software
like Excel, SQL, or Python.
• Online Tutor – Teaching through virtual
platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, MS Teams).
• Social Media Manager – Managing business
pages, creating content, and running ads.
EDUCATION
• ICT enhances learning when teachers are
digitally literate and integrate it into the
curriculum. Tools like digital whiteboards,
smartphones, and flipped classrooms
promote interactive learning, higher-order
thinking skills, and prepare students for
technological advancements.
SOCIALIZING
ICT and social media have transformed
communication, relationships, and information
access. They help young people build connections,
gain confidence, develop social skills, and
participate in global interactions. Platforms like
Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube enable rapid
sharing of ideas and interests, making socialization
more dynamic and accessible.
IMPACT OF ICT
IN THE SOCIETY
QUESTIONS:
1.Can ICT make work easier? How?
2.What can happen if our personal data is not
safe online?
3. What can happen if people use ICT too
much?
4. Can ICT help save time? Give an example.
5.What can we do to use ICT in a good way?
POSITIVE IMPACTS OF
INFORMATION AND
•COMMUNICATION
Access to Information: WeTECHNOLOGY
can now find
information and services quickly and cheaply using
the internet, like online classes, tutorials, and even
virtual reality learning.
• New Tools & Opportunities: ICT provides useful
tools like digital cameras, photo editing apps, and
special software that helps people with disabilities
work more easily.
POSITIVE IMPACTS OF
INFORMATION AND
•COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
Enhanced Communication: Talking to others is
faster and cheaper with email, messaging, video
calls, and VoIP. Businesses can reach customers
worldwide.
• Information Management: Companies can
manage stocks better, reduce waste, save money,
and advertise to the right people using customer
data.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF
INFORMATION AND
•COMMUNICATION
Job Loss: Machines, robots, and TECHNOLOGY
automation can replace
human workers. Jobs may also move to other countries with
cheaper labor.
• Reduced personal interaction: People may feel lonely or
isolated because they spend less time talking face-to-face.
• Reduced Physical Activity: Spending too much time with
technology can lead to health problems like obesity, heart
disease, and diabetes.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF
INFORMATION AND
•COMMUNICATION
Cost: ICT devices, software, TECHNOLOGY
and maintenance are
expensive, and keeping up with new technology
requires skilled staff.
• Competition: Businesses face tougher competition,
sometimes losing customers or funding to cheaper or
larger companies.
THANK YOU
FOR
LISTENING!

2. Name at least 4 uses of ICT in our daily lives and
explain.
3. Give 5 positive impacts and 5 negative impacts of ICT
in the society.
