Nomads

Let's take it from the top.

Nomads is the story of a Martian, a Venusian and a shiny sphere from the sky.

It also has six legged, carnivorous guinea pigs, gangster era cars, Las Vegas and bionic eyes you can watch downloads and streams on - if you keep up your subscription fee. Our hero(ish) is Mads.

He's broke; a race car driver and frankly, he's not having a very good day.

All that is about to change - well, actually its probably going to stay the same but in a different flavor.

I am in love. This is the most pulpy, 70s sci-fi story I have run into in ages and it is delicious so far. It reminds me of reading my dad's old The Martian Chronicles and the Asimov sci-fi magazines you could get in the mail back when I was a kid. There's a grit and lived-in feeling to the story so far with a lead character that's been at the bottom so long he's gotten casual about it.

Seriously, this is everything I love about sloppy sci-fi at this point. And the art is hitting it out of the ballpark for that era/vibe as well. We're down in the trenches reading Mad Magazine and Han Solo is still at that point in his career with Star Wars that he shot first. I'd forgotten how good these stories feel to read now that everything's become so polished and epic. I don't know where this story is going but I am very, very happy to go along.

rating: PG (so far)

warnings: death, hungry hamsters, gangster tropes, eye horror

finished: we're just getting started, baby!

abs?: only on the Martian guinea pigs currently
