suggestion: we interpret the boogeymen's failure to kill someone and being forced into red life as their bloodlust getting desperate. so desperate, in fact, that they resort to killing themselves to satisfy the craving, again and again and again... until they reach red life. and when they do...... that new, red, desire to slaughter everyone overpowers the boogeycurse.........

just enough for them to stop their self-hunger into oblivion :)
