They have always called me ‘monster’:
slime-streaked, fetid and rotten, plague-bearer.
They have cursed my children’s sharp teeth,
thick hides, poisonous breath. Precious speckled Kerberos,
Scylla’s lovely hair, Hydra always smiling
its dozen smiles. Sphinx has her father’s eyes.
I know they inconvenience or bother or eat
the puling mortals. How not? What I don’t know
is why so many think I should mourn this
or hide my face in shame. They call me “monster.”
I find I far prefer “mother.”
