These dragons were drawn to the alchemical teachings of Baldwin, they studied with him, learning all he had to teach. They were there the fateful day when lightning struck Baldwin's pot and be began changing. It was then that these dragons had the brilliant idea of using the Mutagen on objects instead of dragons. If this Mutagen could create an entirely new breed of dragon, one that was never intended to exist, then what could it change mundane objects into?
The experiments they did on objects produced nothing, they were failures. So against the teachings of Baldwin, he would never allow them to put live things into his brew, they captured members of the Beastclans and used the Mutagen on them. They mutated, just as Baldwin had, but the Mutagen proved too strong for the Beastclans and they died. Baldwin eventually caught wind of it and told them to put a stop to it, immediately. Not wanting to disappoint their teacher anymore than they already had they agreed and instead experimented on themselves.
The change happened fast. While they had been patient and considerate dragons before they became easily agitated and rude. Their scales gained a dirt like texture and gold sprung up on their bodies, real gold, but unable to be removed. They had discovered an incredible alchemical formula, one that could turn dirt into gold! They also learned a lesson: Alchemy isn't magic and there is always an equal price that must be paid.

Irrwahn These are cool, have you considered adding a red variant? Like the stone from Harry Potter or Fullmetal Alchemist?

Ah yeah, I thought of that actually. ^^ But my intention was to create a subspecies that resembles both, earth and the alchemists aiming to create gold out of "dirt". :)
Why don't you create your own alchemist breed in your flight? :D We need more variety!
Berry/Berry/Gold looks good too with skink and spinner! :)
