I am surprised yet not by the popularity of G1s, as well as the lack of preference for Ancients. I feel like if you could somehow get people who never looked at the forums to enter answers for a survey like this, the data would be sooo different.
I make a habit of checking up on the dragons I sell/give away, or the random dragon feature on the Home page, and it's rare that I see G1-centric lairs or people who make it a point to have more moderns than ancients. But I definitely see a lot of people on the forums who are G1 obsessed or who hate Ancients as a concept LOL
All in all this is very cool! Especially interesting to me how different the answers for dominance participation are vs how successful the flights are known to be in dominance standings or how often they push.
If you do another survey like this, I've always been super curious about the ways people purchase dragons and if/how they gene them once they have them. Things like how popular is it to buy a dragon because you like how it is and never change it, or if you buy a dragon with the intention to change them somehow. The price ranges that people are willing to pay for dragons, if they frequent the forums to find dragons or just look at the AH. How many projects people have and how quickly it takes them to finish them, etc.

This is such a good point, would surely reflect some different play styles!

fwiw, some reasons i value certain G2s that aren’t lore driven:
- something that’s too easily gotten isn’t fun; challenge is part of the appeal (though excessive effort is also offputting in something i do for fun)
- this is why i scry/breed a lot of rare, matchy XYZs and specifically collect matchy XYZs G1s in certain color ranges
- happening to stumble across a G2 with colors in the ranges i already collect is just neat/rare
- granted, “neat” isn’t something i’ll necessarily pay more for. aesthetics are the most important purchasing motivator.
- and while lore isn’t a motivator to purchase, G2 status can help inform their lore/how they fit into the clan.

Fire may not have regular exalters, but when we Dom It's a party in the Fire Forums whether we place or not, so this doesn't really surprise me.

Welcome New Players!
Here's a small list of links to Helpful Forum Guides:
Thanks for writing all this up! Super interesting to see the Fire Dom vs exalting results. I'm generally only involved for Flameforgers so don't have much insight into what's going on there, but it looks like some other players have provided some explanations?
Personally, as an "old" player, I do value older dragons, namely low-digit dragons, because I'm not quite old enough to have been around for them, so they feel extra special. However, I imagine different players might define old dragons differently, whether it's by ID or just by age, so I wonder if that might get interesting responses?
I would love to be notified for future surveys!
I’d love to hear if anyone has any theories for why this misalignment exists.
As a fire flighter this was really interesting to me too! I can’t speak for others, but for me personally I am very involved with fire dom, and exalt dragons during every push - but because fire pushes so infrequently I answered “I exalt dragons occasionally”. I do not participate in other flights’ dom events or exalt dragons when we are not pushing (the exception is an occasional foddart order). If this is common amongst the rest of the flight, that could explain the discrepancy.
Please add me to the pinglist (if there is one) for next year’s survey - I am interested to see the next iteration. Great job on a thorough and interesting analysis :)

Thanks for taking the time to make this, it was a really interesting read!

the fact that im lumped in with old players......... i feel special
im surpriesd shadow had one of the least responses? its the most numerous flight
i like how wind users are the ones most likely to have been in other flights. it really fits this flight doesnt it
the graphs ffor who was the most likely to prefer ancient breeds is interesting. that it dips for old players but jumps up significantly for very old players
anyway really interesting! theres a lot of correlations i didnt know existed

oh this is interesting! some notes as i go through:
- i wonder if earth had more respondents because we've got a higher % of active members than other flights? we're small but we are a tight-knit, dom-heavy flight
- new users probably exalt more because they have less lair space. but i don't know why a player from 2020-2021 wouldn't be used to exalting more if they've got lair space, because they need to be making a profit somehow (?)
- curious why you split "leveling dragons for exaltation" and "grinding for profit" in the coli tbh
- i find it interesting that people don't care about naomi descendants tbh, i get the lack of appeal but it's also such an interesting piece of site history
- i'm glad the rest of the userbase doesnt care about gen 2's tbh
- the disparity between people liking moderns vs. ancients is really interesting. i know some of the reasons why people dont prefer ancients (a lot of designs aren't really rule-breaking, and some users have even called them samey which... is further than i'd go but it's not an uncommon complaint). but i didnt realize they were THAT unpopular. i've had people get... heated when i mentioned that i don't like how ancients-focused FR has been for the past few years. so it genuinely surprises me that i'm the majority opinion there lol
- the disinterest in XXXs is also really interesting
- YALL ARE ACTUALLY TRYING TO COMPLETE YOUR BESTIARIES? i didnt know anyone like. was trying. it's such a hard goal. good luck i guess. omg
anyways. very cool survey and cool to see one divided by account age that's this in-detail. thank you for sharing this!
Wow! That was really interesting! I also agree with your opinion that even though this isn't some highly precise scientific data analysis or whatever, that there is still merit in seeing these patterns (?hello Fire you ok?)
Also I laughed out loud when I saw that the majority of those who change Flights are from Wind. Very fitting. Go here the wind takes you :p
Thanks for taking the time to share your results with us! Great work!
Edit: On the 'participate in Dom thing, maybe there were some who thought it meant helping run events like raffles, fodder programs or such events, and not just exalting dragons during a dom push?
