So last year, I opened every chest I obtained and left the festival with around 27 nocturne eggs. I was hoping to maybe aim for 50 or 60 this year (if my achey hands will permit), but I recently saw somebody say that selling the chests in the AH outright can possibly net a higher profit.
I definitely don't need any more projects on my plate, and having eggs in my vault doesn't help me forget about them lol. But idk, what's the general consensus between opening strange chests vs selling them as is?

if i remember correctly, the price of chest evened out to the probability of having a noc egg, so it was net neutral whether you open chests and sell eggs, or sell the chests and buy eggs, statistically

Orcalot i believe the odds for getting an egg are about 1 in 10 and strange chests sell for about 20g on average, eggs during notn are often 200g.
So it about evens out. if you're also wanting the new items id personally recommend opening chests!
edit: my egg luck has been pretty good so im probably biased haha

i personally open half, sell half. selling half gives me guaranteed profit, while opening half gives me that sweet sweet serotonin

Open what I find; I don't sell or buy, or at least I haven't before. I enjoy the challenge of trying to get the new items from opening chests and the fun surprise of seeing what I get in general, plus even if I'm unlucky I at least get some good Baldwin fodder for the coming year to make up for how much NotN munches on my alchemy stock. I open them. Opening chests is fun, and I want lots of spare familiars & apparel for melting throughout the year. Also, this is a bit of a silly reason, but I keep track of my egg count + egg rate every year and selling chests would mess up the data.
That works for me because I don't get any temptation to hatch. If you're always going to be thinking about eggs in the vault you may want to sell, or do half-and-half.

I open all of mine. I collect Familiars and like to stash eggs for the sake of cash boosts at later times. I also like to have a few Noc scrolls on hand if I can.

I have a bit of an algorithm I follow which has always worked out well for me.
Earn five chests, open. If egg, sell for 200g, then sink 100g of those gems into five more chests. Open. If egg, wash rinse repeat. If no egg, then the next five chests must be earned, not bought.
This usually nets me a good few thousand gems each year. Of course, I'm also off work for the month of Dec, so I have plenty of time to work NotN.

The answer comes down to math and what other people are doing and when they're doing it. It's sort of like day-trading but without the possibility of ruining your life.
For the last few years the egg rate per chest has been about 8%. This means the more chests you open the more closely your rate will match.
Since Y2 of NotN people have been advising that you should save your eggs for various hatching events that will cause nocturne eggs to rise in value. Likely, but not guaranteed; especially if you're not checking daily on the run up to the site anniversary, notable dragon number hatches or new breed releases. Oh, and the random person who decided to buy a thousand for a mass-hatch.
Not surprisingly that advice has encouraged egg prices during NotN to stay higher (no more 100g eggs) and rise less (330g isn't happening during the rest of the year, either).
Short answer: pick a strategy and never look back. Doesn't even have to be a good one, just pick something.
Math answer: calculate price per chest given 8% eggs and a guess at what the various other drops average and compare vs. chest price. Hourly is best, but daily works, too.
Long answer
Even Longer Answer which includes questions you didn't ask.

I want to live in Theory. Everything works there.
Have you checked the
