once you open it and get the wearable eyes, the mirror remains "openable" but serves no other purpose than to change colors. so yes it's kind of a trick item

After April 2nd, it became just a trinket, a souvenir item. The only use for it was to be a container for the item, and once the apparel item was received from it on April 2, there was no longer a use for it other than a souvenir.

if the mirror is Depleted, you won't get an item out of it. it'll just cycle through the other mirror colors for fun.
